why ban pokemon thread
-
The M rating.
-
I would assume it has to do with this thread (http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/message_boards/video-computer-games/games-deleted/msg56971/#msg56971).
I guess Schaef's return means that he's going back to some older forum rules. Either that or Doug hacked into Schaef's account.

While this thread was meant to be humorous, I do find it a bit funny that we're suddenly enforcing the pokemon rule, which hasn't been enforced in about four years.

Now it's humorous.

Only if we discuss.

This is on topic with the original discussion:
Simpsons - Bill Cosby and Pokemon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OHFYJO9v5Xg#)

People think everything is from the devil.

Pokemon is quite Satanic to be honest, check out this video it's very interesting.

If you look for the devil you can find him in anything. That's not the fault of the actual thing, you went looking for him

I'm watching that video and only six minutes in. A few things have come to my attention:
1. That mullet is clearly not of God.
2. Enchanters are people enchant? Wowzorz.
3. He just implied that most of the male members of the congregation were abominations.
-
For those who don't want to watch it, it actually is interesting (been watching for a bit now, and found the Pokemon section as well).
The problem with any of this is that, as pointed out, you can find symbols or symbology anywhere you look. The fact that Poliwhirl has a swirly on his stomach does not mean that it is the occult symbol of male fertility.
The speaker is very knowledgeable, but he has no real experience with Pokemon (this is very clear from his statements on the various Pokemon), and does not delve any deeper than the symbol on Poliwhirl and an insinuation that Pikachu's tail is in the shape of an occult symbol. He distorts what each word means to achieve his purpose, which makes me uncomfortable with his premise.
Symbols have power because we fear them and grant them that power. If we are truly children in Christ, we have no need to fear them.
He does have a point about commercialism and instilling a desire to control and own everything, but we have to deal with that in any endeavor we pursue.
HOWEVER, ON WHETHER TO HAVE CONTROVERSY: If something would cause your brother to stumble, it is something you should avoid exposing him to. The example from the bible is meat sacrificed to idols. It has no power, and perhaps you do not fear it. But, if your brother feels that it is wrong to eat and violates his conscience, don't encourage him to eat.
-
The speaker is very knowledgeable
He's actually making up the vast majority of what he says that isn't directly quoted from the Bible, and even then, he's distorting a lot of it.

I'm not talking about the biblical parts, sorry for not being clear. He does know a lot about occultism that meshes with what I know from other sources. He does distort and stretch that knowledge, however.
-
Pikachu's tail is an occult symbol. What, a lightning bolt?
*EDIT* Pokemon starts about 1:55:00 in the video for those not interested in watching 2 hours to get to the relevant part.
I also love how a former Satanist doesn't know the difference between a pentagram and a pentangle.
-
Great, does this mean that every post discussing various tournament styles of CCG's will be banned too?
Also, why no LotR ban?
-
The Pokemon debate goes back to 1999. I have not watched the video, but he sounds like an extemist (aka from Florida).
The original debate about Pokemon was with the cards, not the TV show or video game. The card game was started by Wizards of the Coast. They made the first few sets before Nintendo took the task on themselves (I believe with the e-Reader cards).
Churches were into boycotts back then (anyone else remember the Disney boycott?). Since Wizards of the Coast were well known for making Dungeons and Dragons, and eventually Magic the Gathering, boycotting Pokemon was a peripheral effect. Of course, there were some that felt WotC was trying to sneak their "evil" agenda into Pokemon (hence the extremists).

I found this really funny, considering where you live :)
As for deleting Pokemon posts, Schaef is entirely within the rules. If they haven't been enforced in a while then it is a failing on the rest of our parts.
As for the reasons for the ban, I would assume that it is a combination of trying to avoid something that could be a stumbling block for some people, and also avoiding promotion of a competing product on the Redemption forum.
-
Also, why no LotR ban?
Probably because LotR was established by Tolkien, who was a Catholic.

LotR is also defunct, and therefore NOT a competing product anymore.

Ah so only products Redemption is not competing with can be mentioned. Rob must be a Capitalist...
-
Pujols
(There. I said a naughty word. Cue ominous music for ban hammer entrance...)
-
They were discussing a pokemon video game, not a card game. Also, there are entire forums dedicated to discussing mainstream (competing) games.

A bad one, at that, if this is his solution. (That is, if he's the one who came up with this rule). If Redemption cannot stand up to other products (which I believe it can) then banning the mention of them is not the solution. Creating a better Redemption is.
There needs to be a better reason behind these rules than "They compete with Redemption."

Florida is well known for harboring wackos, which is why I was told to move here. I'm sure the Quran-burning pastors down here also burned Pokemon cards back in the day. ;)
... and also avoiding promotion of a competing product on the Redemption forum.
I doubt that this is a reason. I would guess that most CCG players play more than one CCG. Are you saying that if I started a thread about Hot Wheels Acceleracers CCG that it would be deleted?
-
Florida: Home of old people, wackos, and a crazy T1 meta.

In the greatest nation on Earth: Amurrica.
Also, there's really no way that guy was ever really a Satanist. Just saying.

Don't forget hanging chads and Tim Tebow.
They were discussing a pokemon video game, not a card game.
Unfortunately, the belief system at the time was based on boycotts, which is all-inclusive. As it was, I had to smuggle the large Lugia action figure that made screeching noises (like from the movie) into my house so my son could play with it without being burned at the stake.

Im more intrigued by the notion of satanic messages in Teletubbies
-
So now we are enforcing rules based on wacko floridian boycotts. Okay. ::)
Im more intrigued by the notion of satanic messages in Teletubbies
Like I said, if you go looking for it...A conspiracy theorists sees the symbol on Poliwhirls chest and thinks OCCULT SYMBOL!! I think oh it looks like a whirlpool, Poliwhirl, uses Whirlpool as an attack. Same with Pikachu's lightning bolt tail, he's an electric type, and uses Thundershock, Thunderbold, Thunder, and other various forms of lightning (yes I realize that thunder is the sound, I don't know why they did that but it's a common thing for some stupid reason.)

The boycotts were from the Southern Baptist Convention, which covers a lot more territory than Florida, and had a lot more weight back in 1999 (no fat jokes please).

Teletubbies were Satanic because they had no educational value. They were using "baby-talk" rather than words, which caused digression in preschoolers. They also had bad manners. ;)
Barney, on the other hand, taught real words and manners. If he wasn't a dinosaur (another boycott), then the SBC would have embraced him wholeheartedly.
-
I was joking :P
-
There is no way Pokemon can possibly be viewed as 'the competition'. If they are, then it is a competition Redemption has lost for 15 years.
-
In the words of a famous band:
"Don't go looking for snakes, you might find them"
-
In the words of another band, "Who Put The Ram In The Rama Lama Ding Dong?"
-
Pokemon just plain sounds inappropriate. :P
-
I find it funny that my post talking about talking about talking about Pokemon was deleted, but the rest of this thread wasn't.

well okay you've got us there :o maybe we should refer to it by the real name. Pocket Monsters. wait, thay might be worse....

Removal FAQ:
Why the post was removed: there was a link included that referenced the related rule.
That rule is old! Rules have expiration dates?
That rule is dumb! Not my rule.
I should get to talk about whatever I want, even if other people consider it inappropriate for the venue! Not really, no.
Some other thread somewhere else didn't get this or that or the other thing. You caught the mods being something less than 100% vigilant and 110% perfect. Cookie forthcoming.
But this thread wasn't removed! This is not the first time public discussion has taken place regarding a rule someone questioned. I don't really see the comparison.
Rob bans discussion on all competing products! No. As Jon has rightly pointed out, in the larger CCG market, Redemption is a small fish in a big pond.
We can't have discussions about the underlying mechanics of card games! In point of fact, discussions about the mechanical aspects of Magic and Pokemon HAVE been allowed in the past and continue to be so, provided that is the thrust of the discussion. When Teams play was being developed, there were comparative analyses with the Two-Headed Giant format in Magic.
You posted in this thread a couple days after we talked about this and it got locked! I'm late to the party but, aside from the fact that I find it odd that people want to come back and complain about a rule every other time a thread gets locked, there were some other odd ideas about why the rule exists, and I saw value in putting those ideas to rest. This is not an argument or a debate, it is only a statement: the rules say no Pokemon, so a Pokemon thread was removed. It's that simple.
