My point is that Shaq is useless on a quick paced team. He is a detriment to the team and would give little to no statistical support. Russell at least provides the potential to be able to play midrange, under the hoop, and the fast break adequately. Shaq can only play under the hoop, albeit perhaps slightly better than Russell. However, when you look at the scope of the team, Russell is much, much better to have on the large majority of teams. Unless you plan on building the entire team aroudn Shaq(which is ridiculous to assert on a dream team), Russell provides better support to the inevitable playstyle most dream teams will be pursuing.

Shaq is much slower these days but back in his prime he had quickness previously unseen in a player his size. If it was Shaq's size and strength that made him the dominant player he was in the 90's, he'd still be the most dominant player because he's still huge and strong. However, it was the quickness he possessed back then that allowed him to dominate.

Individual stats are meaningless in the face of pure awesomeness. Bill Russell played 13 seasons and the Celtics won the NBA Championship 11 times (Russell was injured one of the down years). That was after winning two consecutive NCAA championships in his final two years of college. He won 5 NBA MVP awards, mostly early in his career when Cousy was about to retire, and before Havlicek was drafted. One of his MVP awards was the same year Wilt the Stilt broke the then-NBA record by averaging over 50 points per game (including the famous 100 point game). The voters felt that Russell was still more valuable to his team (The Celtics won the title that year).

Opposing coaches were quoted as saying that they did not fear the Celtics if Russell wasn't playing. His defensive prowess won games, not his scoring. He didn't need to score a bunch of points. That was not his mission. His mission was to shut down the opposing team's star, and he did that better than anyone in the history of the game.

Well said. But Dwight Howard's defense is just as good... *stops dreaming* Although Dwight Howard does have the record for most blocks in a game.
