Job ideas?
« on: May 17, 2009, 01:24:05 AM »

I want a job were I can acquire useful knowledge/skills while still earning a salary. The focus is on the former, not the latter. I thought of bar tending but am not sure if I can take the constant on-your-feet thing. Any suggestions?

Scientific research comes to mind.  Perhaps working for a biotech company, or even a pharmaceutical one.  You're always learning something new, and would be much more likely to help the world than if you were a bartender.  Of course having been a research scientist, I'm a bit biased :)

I thought about pharmaceuticals, but I'd assume that would require some form of college degree, which I currently lack.

Let me clarify... A summer/college job for a nineteen year-old college sophomore.

Long term I have my sights set for something along the lines of scholarly research or teaching.

Join the Air Force. They will train you and you will get paid for it. Way better than college where you learn, but you have to pay for it. Myself for example, I've been in the Air Force for just over a year now and my entire first year was all training and I got paid for 100% of it.

Hm... The Air Force pays for college right?

A few of my friends are in the Marines and are getting college paid for. I don't know if I'd be a very good pilot, but I'd assume that there are desk-jobs available?

You are correct sir. Truth be told is that only 4% of the people in the Air Force actually fly. Also the Air Force currently offers 100% college tuition assitance. Along with that if you have any current student loans the Air Force will repay up to $10,000 of your loans for you as an enlisted person. Furthermore, once you get out of the Air Force you will have the Montgomery GI bill. The GI bill will pay for 4 years worth of college tuition for you and that will be available up to 10 years once you are honorably discharged from the Air Force.

I am heading for a lawyer or a taxedermist. In English, I would either make money, or I would stuff animals.

Yeah, military isn't really up my alley.

I turned in an application to Barnes & Noble the other day. Maybe that will work out.

In other news, I meeting with one of my professors to sign up to do studying/researching in a given field for college credit. This should also look pretty good for graduate school.

Yeah, military isn't really up my alley.

I used to think that too, but the more I learned about the Air Force the better of an opportunity it seemed to be. I had a lot of misconceptions about the military in general and once I found out the truth about things it's really more like any other job, but with a lot more benefits and way more opportunities.

When I read the topic I assumed it was in new card ideas and they were from the book of Job.  :D
