I already have a date, so that's not a problem. But is it worth it to spend all that money $190 per person plus limo, tux, afterprom house which is a ton of money, etc?
What's your take on this? Money vs Memory
-
do you like the girl? if so then yes it should be a good time.
I went to prom my Jr year and two proms ( hers and mine) my sr year and they were all three wastes of time and money.
But I did not really like the dates I took so I believe that ruined it for me from the beginning. Prom isnt some place to go stag, or to take a friend. You go to prom as a couple who care about each other..
but just make sure you guard against what sometimes happens AFTER prom ;)
dont decide to be pure when you are already in the backseat of the car...you arent likely to me thinking clearly then. Make the right decisions before hand and guard against those temptations, no matter what your peers may be doing.

My wife and I started dating shortly after our Sophmore year of high school. We went to prom one year, and ditched it the other year. It was not worth the money. The year we ditched it we used the money to go on a nice little day trip where we went on a boat ride to a nearby island, rode a glass-bottom boat ride, rode little paddle boats around a bay, rode bikes around some hills, had a nice walk along the beach, talked over lunch in a diner, talked over ice cream in an ice-cream shop, took the boat back to the mainland, went out to a nice dinner, and I got her to her home by 7:30 pm. A good night sleep AND we saved money over the costs of a prom. :)

I would like to echo the above sentiments.
Prom=Waste of Money
Especially, if you are going as friends or have been dating awhile.
Bryon gave a great suggestion if you have been dating awhile...and I know New York City has things to do if you are creative enough.
I would only go if...
You are newly dating a girl and she wants to go or you want to impress her.
-or-
You have been dating a while and you know Prom would mean a lot to her.
It is really case by case, but most guys that I've talked to think it's a big waste of money. On a personal note, it was two (went as Jr. & Sr.) of the few regrets that I have from high school years.

limo? Borrow your dad's car.

That would be the only reason I would ever go to Prom. Other than that, I see no point in the first one. If you have to impress her to get her to like you, then that relationship is not going to last. IMO, she has to like you for who you are and now how you "impress her." But other than that, I agree with everything Soul Seeker has said.
But then again this is coming from a guy who has yet to go to a dance, I refuse to.

I think it just depends....
- Me, I came from a small town where I was the class president and all of my friends were going. I took a friend of mine who lived 3 hours away my junior year who did not go to her own, and then again my senior year with someone I dated long distance (over 19 hour drive) for 7 months before we decided to just be friends (back BEFORE there were cell phones, facebook, and all of that...where we communicated via email, letters, and a couple long distance calls, seems like I had a knack for being interested in women who lived far away from me ;D). As such, my tux was 50.00, we raised money for tickets so they were free, and our high school parents had a great after-prom event with casino night, swimming, and the like. My date junior year just kept falling asleep wherever she could nap, but I had fun with my friends. As for transportation, you DON't need a limo. Junior year I used my cousin's car because my 1988 Tempo wasn't stylish, and my senior year my buddy and I convinced his grandfather to let us ride in the cab of a semi to prom (his grandfather owns a metal manufacturing plant). Do something unexpected, of course a tractor in NYC MIGHT not work as well...

I basically agree with everyone else. A girl asked me to go to prom as friends when I was in HS and I decided it wasn't worth the money. We went out to a movie instead, found out that there really wasn't that much going for our relationship, and were just friends from then on. I was really glad that I hadn't wasted a ton of money to find that out :)

My mom went to the prom with her friend, Honestly she says it is better to go with friends if ya go than a date, sure you may look like a loser, but there is no expectations either.

I did not go to a prom and never regretted not knowing what I did not miss out on..... ;D
Godspeed,

Technically, we (as men) are the "ones with expectations".

I did not go to either of my proms. The best part was that the next day, all my friends were complaining about it (mainly the DJ). I just smiled because I just played games instead of going :).

Proms are a modern replaement for the Debutante's Ball's that used to take place in the south ( and in some places still do) it is sort of coming out/rite of passage for women...or atleast that is what society has built it up to be. So before you listen to long and hard to all thes bros dump on prom, remember that it probably means alot more to her than to you.
with that in mind, if she really doesnt want to go to prom, then you probably shouldn't, but if she DOES want to go to prom, (and you really like her) you should probably shut up and endure it. We guys endure a lot of things for the women we love (shopping, washing the dishes, etc) and prom would often fall into that category. Perhaps it will be cool and you will like it, but if she wants to go, and you decide not to go, you will probably regret it.

It'd be awesome if someone (like a godparent) could sponsor your prom/after-prom. For as long as you know and are sure to be within moral limits, and that your intention is pure, I'd go for it. Otherwise, DITCH it.
Caleb, what was the ;) for, anyway? :-\ ---- careful, son.
IMO, WWJD? He was a party-goer. He'd most likely be in one or already may have been in one when he was 16 or 17. He, being God-man, though, was an unfair plus. ;)

Ironically, I just randomly saw my former prom date on facebook at 1:30AM, started a conversation, and ended up going over to her apartment a few minutes later to watch movies. Random.

I went to my prom with friends... and it was fun, but I really didn't care. The only reason I went was because my friends REALLY wanted me to go, and I joked that the only way I would go is if they bought my ticket. Funny enough, THEY DID! It was a birthday present. So I got stuck going... but I just went with my friends, and it was fun. :) But, had they not taken my joke seriously, I would probably not have gone.
And Caleb, you need to really chill out. that's not even funny.

Stereotypically Yes. O_o; I hang out with too many people who break those though ;).

Very truthful statement right there. Well, set of statements, that is. By all means if she wants to go and she means something to you, you better suck it up and go.
