Title: Interesting
Post by: Felix on June 07, 2009, 02:33:27 PM
I was reading the Sunday Comics when the Mini Page fell out. After I finished with the comics, I started reading the Mini page. Something in there caught my eye. It said
Quote
*A.D. stands for anno Domini, which means "the year of our Lord" in Latin. When we use it with a year, it refers to the time after Jesus Christ was born. B.C. stands for "before Christ." Some people say B.C.E. (before common era) and C.E. (common era) instead.

Wow way to stereotype.
Well, I almost picked a random race instead of saying Bush so I'm probably more guilty.

I am certain that if you polled the general public about what A.D. stands for, the top responses would be:

1. After Death
2. I have no idea
3. Apres Diem
4. Annual Determination
5. Anno Domini

Okay...

Haha, I just realised that "anno Domini" is a shot at you pre-tribbers, mid-tribbers, and post-tribbers (and generally anyone else who believes in the rapture).

Perhaps.

Where'd you get that?
Title: Re: Interesting

Where'd you get that?

"In the year of our Lord" implies that we are in Christ's millennial reign rather than awaiting the "tribulation" or "rapture".

I would think that is referring to earthly years in the first coming. The millenium refers to the "second coming" or "return of our Lord."

Except at the time Anno Domini was coined, people believed that Jesus had already returned.

That makes sense.

.... sooooo they came up with a retroactive term relating to the time of his first human birth?  ???

When he was born was the first "year of our Lord". Every year after that is another "year of our Lord".

That makes sense, since he never died for good after that. Thanks. :)

When he was born was the first "year of our Lord". Every year after that is another "year of our Lord".

And so it will continue to be until His return. I still fail to see how this has any bearing on the tribulation debate.

There have already been a couple of threads on these boards revealing the true meaning of A.D. This is not a good sample of how many people actually know what it means.
