-my thoughts-

I was 5 when Empire came out so I don't know if that can provide any usable material.  I do know that for the last 25 years of my life, I don't think I have seen anything cooler than a laser sword.  Not even robots that turn into stuff.

When I first saw the original three movies it was at a friend's house.  I remember thinking that they were very cool movies, and made playing with all his Star Wars toys a lot more fun.  When I was in college, Episode I came out.  I remember the extreme hysteria surrounding the return of Star Wars after all those years.  I also remember the extreme hatred for Jar-Jar that poured out from my generation.  But most of all, I remember being so excited to discover that the Star Wars saga was not just a "coming-of-age" story about Luke.  Instead it was a much larger story about the fall and redemption of Anikin.  This made it worth suffering through an army of Jar-Jars

I have always had an addition to movies.  I can turn a bad television show off but something is differen for me and movies.  I will watch a painfully bad movie and then beg for those two hours back after, but during the movie, I have this need to understand how the story is resolved. 

Telling you that, lets you know why I chose to spend my 8th birthday the way I did.

I had heard of star wars but I had never seen them until my 8th birthday.  My older cousin had all the cool starwars Toys like the Imperial Walker and the Milenium Falcon.  I would play with his toys and get yelled at for it when I was over at his house  but having never seen the movies I had no idea what they were for other than they looked cool.  It was 1984 and for my birthday that year my dad said I could rent any movies I wanted.  I rented Raiders, Star Wars and Empire strikes back. 

Raiders was just awesome.  Straight up awesome.

Star Wars was totally different.  There was something magical about that movie.  After watching it I felt as if, not just the whole world, but the whole universe had opened up to me.  I wondered if I could move stuff with the force. I wondered if I could somehow meditate enough and tap into some unseen resevoir of strength.  I wondered if there was a higher purpose for me in this life. 

Following that with Empire strikes back just made me hooked on the whole star Wars experience.  I thought that Empire was the best movie of the three.  Surprisingly I did not see return of the Jedi for another three years or so.  The storyline nad the character development in these three movies was superb.


I watched the starwars movies when they were re-released in the theatres but I was sadly dissapointed with episodes 1-3.  To me it seems that Lucas was relying too much on CGE than on character development.  The story lines were most of hte tome hoo-hum, but the real betrayal was the lack of character integrity throughout the movies.  The wishy-washiness of Padme was unforgivable.

Mistaken are you, young padawan.  And no, I'm not talking about myself.  Being the eldest to post to this point I will tell you that I know several kids who took Star Wars more seriously than Mr. Metalpsalm OR any Trekker for that matter.  I was 13 during a time when kids were going to school everyday dressed as Star Wars characters.  I've always enjoyed movies (transformers beat light sabers  ), but I have never understood how people can become so consumed by a two-hour fictional movie. 

Of course, at 13 my life was consumed by the fictional "perfect" girlfriend.

So you became a buddhist?

No, But it did lead to spiritual topics where my church and family were able to guide me into a stronger faith

When I watched Episode III in theaters, I went to the Midnight showing.  When I left...I hated it. After it came out on DVD, I watched it again, and for whatever reason, I enjoyed it much more than when I saw it in theater.

I saw Episode II three times.  Once with my sister, once with my class (for graduation from Fifth Grade), and once...some other time...yeah...

In an unrelated story, I saw a life size Yoda cutout at a radio station booth at my county fair.  I knew the DJ, so I asked if I could have the cutout, and she said, yes, if I quoted Yoda on the air.  I did.
