I was 5 when Empire came out so I don't know if that can provide any usable material.  I do know that for the last 25 years of my life, I don't think I have seen anything cooler than a laser sword.  Not even robots that turn into stuff.

Anything is usuable. I am just trying to get some people invovled with the paper rather than just talking about how it affected people. It makes hte thesis more personal.

When I first saw the original three movies it was at a friend's house.  I remember thinking that they were very cool movies, and made playing with all his Star Wars toys a lot more fun.  When I was in college, Episode I came out.  I remember the extreme hysteria surrounding the return of Star Wars after all those years.  I also remember the extreme hatred for Jar-Jar that poured out from my generation.  But most of all, I remember being so excited to discover that the Star Wars saga was not just a "coming-of-age" story about Luke.  Instead it was a much larger story about the fall and redemption of Anikin.  This made it worth suffering through an army of Jar-Jars :)

I was 9 in 1977 when Episode 4 came out. My Aunt Judy took me to see it in the Theater. She tried to read the opening scrawl, but it made no sense to me. I would never be the same. It was like the whole world opened up. I left there wanting to grow up and ware stormtrooper armor and fly an X-wing! I used to run down the halls really close to the lockers because it looked like the deathstar trench. I became the only athlete in the group of outcasts called "Star Wars Freaks". I dedicated hours of thought to how to build a lightsaber...

A New Hope was the first movie I ever saw. It continues to be one of America's greatest myths, and has influenced society and culture in ways innumerable. You picked a good paper topic.

My name is Colin Bodayle. When I saw Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, I became a Jedi. I now worship the Force. You can quote me on that.
I am not talking about T2 unless I am explicitly talking about T2. Also Mayhem is fine now somehow!

My name was, and still is Phillip. It was 1997. I was in High School. The special edition was released and my friend took me to the the theater to see A New Hope. I immediately fell in love, and was hooked for life. After the movie me and my friend went to our local card shop to get some baseball cards, and we happened to notice there was a Star Wars card game. Now that I was hooked on the movie, I had to have the cards, and I got a pack of BB Premiere, and WB Premiere, and pulled a BB Millenium Falcon (a $30 card at that time).  Thus, not only did Star Wars introduce me to a world that I could have never imagined, but it was also directly responsible for my entry into the world of Collectible Card Games that eventually let me to Redemption.  If it had not been for Star Wars, I probably wouldn't even be on these boards now. Thank you George Lucas!

2. No Anikin and Padme's PAINFULL lines

This is for your own good...
Anakin: Are you an angel?
Queen Amidala: What?
Anakin: An angel. I've heard the deep space pilots talk about them. They live on the moons of Iego, I think. They're the most beautiful creatures in the universe.

Not to mention "Yippee!" ad nauseum.

1. Touche'
2. But the uber menacingness, the hunting and the attack on Tatooine was just great. The double lightsaber that we had never seen before. So cool

I have always had an addition to movies.  I can turn a bad television show off but something is differen for me and movies.  I will watch a painfully bad movie and then beg for those two hours back after, but during the movie, I have this need to understand how the story is resolved.

Telling you that, lets you know why I chose to spend my 8th birthday the way I did.

I had heard of star wars but I had never seen them until my 8th birthday.  My older cousin had all the cool starwars Toys like the Imperial Walker and the Milenium Falcon.  I would play with his toys and get yelled at for it when I was over at his house  but having never seen the movies I had no idea what they were for other than they looked cool.  It was 1984 and for my birthday that year my dad said I could rent any movies I wanted.  I rented Raiders, Star Wars and Empire strikes back.

Raiders was just awesome.  Straight up awesome.

Star Wars was totally different.  There was something magical about that movie.  After watching it I felt as if, not just the whole world, but the whole universe had opened up to me.  I wondered if I could move stuff with the force. I wondered if I could somehow meditate enough and tap into some unseen resevoir of strength.  I wondered if there was a higher purpose for me in this life.

Following that with Empire strikes back just made me hooked on the whole star Wars experience.  I thought that Empire was the best movie of the three.  Surprisingly I did not see return of the Jedi for another three years or so.  The storyline nad the character development in these three movies was superb.

I watched the starwars movies when they were re-released in the theatres but I was sadly dissapointed with episodes 1-3.  To me it seems that Lucas was relying too much on CGE than on character development.  The story lines were most of hte tome hoo-hum, but the real betrayal was the lack of character integrity throughout the movies.  The wishy-washiness of Padme was unforgivable.

Mistaken are you, young padawan.  And no, I'm not talking about myself.  Being the eldest to post to this point I will tell you that I know several kids who took Star Wars more seriously than Mr. Metalpsalm OR any Trekker for that matter.  I was 13 during a time when kids were going to school everyday dressed as Star Wars characters.  I've always enjoyed movies (transformers beat light sabers  ;) ), but I have never understood how people can become so consumed by a two-hour fictional movie.

Of course, at 13 my life was consumed by the fictional "perfect" girlfriend.   :D

When I watched Episode III in theaters, I went to the Midnight showing.  When I left...I hated it. After it came out on DVD, I watched it again, and for whatever reason, I enjoyed it much more than when I saw it in theater.

I saw Episode II three times.  Once with my sister, once with my class (for graduation from Fifth Grade), and once...some other time...yeah...

In an unrelated story, I saw a life size Yoda cutout at a radio station booth at my county fair.  I knew the DJ, so I asked if I could have the cutout, and she said, yes, if I quoted Yoda on the air.  I did.

The creation of Star Wars has cost me more money than all my other hobbies combined.  It awoke my imagination, and to this day I still enjoy the different games that have been born from it.  I have a funny comic strip that was emailed to me.  In short, Lucas is asking a fan if he would buy different products and movies if Lucas would make them in Star Wars.  The fan kept saying yes (in reverse Green Eggs and Ham style).  In the final pane, the fan has Lucas if he just wants his banking routing number, and Lucas responds with, "That would make things easier."  Such is Star Wars merchandising.

On to the memories...
I can't tell you about my first experience of Star Wars other than what my mom told me.  I was 1.  It was at the drive in and I slept through the second half of the movie.

First known memory, was Return of the Jedi.  I was 10.  To this day, RotJ is still my favorite movie.  There are 5 key scenes I remember from that young age.  The frog-like creature eating the little bug and burping.  Jabba eating a frog-like creature.  The Rancor.  Luke's Green Lightsaber first ignite at the Sarlaac Pit.  The final battle between Luke and Vader and then Luke and the Emperor.

On to the Spiritual Significance...
It does have themes that affront Christianity on the subtle level.  Those didn't cripple my faith.  However, I was deeply disappointed that Lucas (who wanted to include every myth, legend, and religion in his movies) decide to copy Christ's virgin birth.  It felt like the movie series I loved slapped me in the face.  It's one thing to create a fictional story but to include that.  It still troubles me to this day, and I watch Episode 1 the least of the 7 movies, AND I when I do watch it...I kind of fast forward that part.  It just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.  It's just hard to put all I have to say about that on a short post....but know this...that scene/Anakin's origin troubles me greatly.
noob with a medal
