Hall of Fame Voting 2012-2013
« on: May 29, 2013, 02:08:14 AM »
0
The nominations were made last fall by the general forum, and the HoF Committee has put together another solid list of candidates for your votes.  We have 7 candidates for each of the 2 categories for the Hall of Fame for 2012-2013.  Each year 1 person from each category will be elected, so since we're combining 2 years, that means that you may vote for 2 people from each category this time.  After the election, the winners will be in one combined group of Hall of Famers, where they will join our 12 inductees from the past (Justin Alstad, Rob Anderson, Chris Bany, Keith Bartram, Mike Berkenpas, Bryon Hake, Gabe Isbell, Doug Gray, Eric Largent, Tim Maly, Ron Sias, and Bill Voigt).  They are simply separated below to display their various contributions.

I would appreciate all input onto this thread being positive.  Please state why you voted FOR someone, not why you DIDN'T vote for someone.  And remember that Redemption is a Christian game meant for "fun and fellowship", so please emphasize these things in your decisions and what you write about these candidates.  (Players who are no longer active have a link to a post about them to help people to be more informed).

Players:
John Earley [T2-mp, TEAMS] - also an Elder
Jonathan Greeson [T1-2p, T2-mp] - also 1 of the co-founders of ROOT
Joshua Hey – [T2-2p, T2-mp (x2)] - 4th place overall RNRS when he left the game.  One of only 3 players to place in the top 3 at Nats in 3 different events in the same year.
Eric Kimmons – [T2-2p (x2), T2-mp (x2)] - Only player ever to win 4 Nats in a row.  One of 2 players who have won at 4 different Nats at all.
Sam Nurge [Sealed, Booster] - Won both the same year, proving those events aren't so random after all
Kevin Shride - [T2-2p, TEAMS (x2)] - Also an Elder and a host
Nathan Voigt - [T1-mp, T2-2p, T2-mp]

Contributors:
Roy Cruz – the Heart of Redemption, Nats host, Elder
Randall Koutnik - NY host responsible for multiple playgroups
John Michaliszyn – Creation Festival Guru, Nats host, Elder
Nathaniel Pearson - long time host and leader of Redemption in the Midwest
Stephen Schaefer – Creator and once manager of the Storehouse, Former overlord of the forum, Nats host, Elder
Sean Templeton - Creator of "Redemption Connect" and the "Redemption Card Creator"
Mike Wolfe – Creator of the "Redemption Card Visualizer", working on "Redemption Live" to replace RTS

John Michaliszyn – Creation Festival Guru, Nats host, Elder

I'd like to cast the first vote for John. He is the man responsible getting me interested in the competitive circuit of this game and more so, literally giving me several "high end" cards to get me started. I saw him for the first time in about a year since he got me started. He promptly recognized me, called me by name and congratulated me on my accomplishments. I wholly anticipated him to have no idea who I was. From there I taught my brother Josiah (Jbeers285) to play. Due to John, Josiah and I have become relatively successful players.

Thanks for everything John, So glad you got me going in this great game.

Roy Cruz – the Heart of Redemption, Nats host, Elder

His reputation precedes him, just about a week ago I heard a host refer to Roy as the "Jonny Appleseed" of redemption.

As to the players I'm still unfamiliar with most of them so my votes are going to be purely based on the achievements posted.

Eric Kimmons – [T2-2p (x2), T2-mp (x2)] - Only player ever to win 4 Nats in a row.  One of 2 players who have won at 4 different Nats at all.

Joshua Hey – [T2-2p, T2-mp (x2)] - 4th place overall RNRS when he left the game.  One of only 3 players to place in the top 3 at Nats in 3 different events in the same year.

Jonathan Greeson [T1-2p, T2-mp] - also 1 of the co-founders of ROOT

John Michaliszyn – Creation Festival Guru, Nats host, Elder

Both these guys are awesome, despite my limited time in the redemption community I have been lucky to come in contact with both of these men.  Meeting Greeson I had no idea of his achievements or contributions. It wasn't until someone else informed me that I learned of his contribution to redemption and of his achievement in the competitive realm.  He is a great guy, and humble to boot.

Michaliszyn is also a great guy. He makes creation twice as fun and does a great job getting new players into the game. He specifically helped out my younger cousin a ton last creation and his son is awesome as well.  Not always, but many times you can tell a lot about a person by their kids and His son is an great young man.

Roy Cruz – the Heart of Redemption, Nats host, Elder
(Everyone knows Roy is going in, great guy, great leader)

Joshua Hey[/url] – [T2-2p, T2-mp (x2)] - 4th place overall RNRS when he left the game.  One of only 3 players to place in the top 3 at Nats in 3 different events in the same year.
(Not familiar with him but his credentials standout)

Thanks for your votes.  Would you mind adding in 3 more (in jmbeers' case) and 2 more (in jbeers285's case) so that you end up voting for 2 players and 2 contributors?

Thanks also for sharing your stories and memories of the people you're voting for.  That is really helpful :)

For contributors:

Roy Cruz – the Heart of Redemption, Nats host, Elder- He has meant so much to Redemption and to the Northeast in particular. He has made it possible for many players to have a chance to start and participate in the game and in tournaments. And Roy proves that at least once in my life I ran a decent demo.

John Michaliszyn – Creation Festival Guru, Nats host, Elder- Hosted the second Nats I attended. Has also been a driving force in bot the National and NE Regional Redemption scene. (And I think I owe hiom for the T2 Regional debacle of 2010.  :) )

For players:

Eric Kimmons – [T2-2p (x2), T2-mp (x2)] - Only player ever to win 4 Nats in a row.  One of 2 players who have won at 4 different Nats at all.-Four Nats in a row is just a huge achievement that deserves recognition.

Jonathan Greeson [T1-2p, T2-mp] - also 1 of the co-founders of ROOT- Whenever I see his name on the forum, it's usually posted by players who are afraid to play him. That pretty much says it all.

I think these are four very deserving candidates.

That said, when are we going to start a Redemption Hall of Shame? I think I could be one of the first inductees in that one. :)

Eric Kimmons.

Voting for Joshua Hey and Eric kimmons because they are the two most sucessful players who haven't gotten into the Hall yet. The same for the Contributers.

Bill Voight.
Thanks for your support for Bill, but he actually is already in the HoF.  Did you mean to put someone else there?

I don't really feel qualified to vote on the Players as I've only met a couple of them in person and I'm not super involved with the higher tiers of game play, lol. If I'm allowed to only vote for one category, please consider the below votes. If not, I'll try and come up with votes for players.

Contributors:
Stephen Schaefer – Creator and once manager of the Storehouse, Former overlord of the forum, Nats host, Elder

Schaef and I had our disagreements (and a few spats, lol) but I came away from knowing him with a deep respect for him as well as an appreciation for his contributions (mostly on the forums as I never met him in real life (and maybe never will now that he's left the forums)). The Storehouse was a brilliant idea and I wish I was active during its prime. Overall, Schaef was a positive impact on Redemption.

Randall Koutnik - NY host responsible for multiple playgroups

Randall is an awesome person, like seriously. I HAVE met him in person and it just reinforced the positive thoughts I had about him. As stated, he's involved with several playgroups in his area; he was heavily involved on the forums for awhile. He was willing to help out with stuff (there was a project he and I were on together, I don't remember what it is) and had a good attitude. All around great person.

Players:
Nathan Voigt--If Tiger Woods hadn't been embroiled in scandal, Nathan would be the Tiger Woods of Redemption. He started playing at a young age (he won his first Regional tournament at 11) and has continued playing at a high level ever since. He is also Co-Founder and Vice-President of the MTTPA (Minnesota Type Two Player's Association), which is an organization dedicated to the proliferation of Redemption's better half in the state of Minnesota. A great player, and a great friend, despite the fact that he has relegated me to being Sergio Garcia for the most part over the past several years.

Joshua Hey--I only met him once (2004 Nats) but when it comes to T2 prowess, he put the Hey in Heyday. I know he had significant influence in Justin's development as a T2 player, who in turn had significant influence in my development. He will probably never know that he made it to the hall, but just as a future NBA star should know the names Bird, Russell, Chamberlain and Jordan, T2 players should know the name Hey.

Contributors:
Stephen "the Schaef" Schaefer--The man who needs no introduction. Seriously.

Roy Cruz--Few people have done more work to grow the game then Roy has. And if they do exist, they are probably already in the Hall. He maintains the forum with the kindest, gentlest, iron fist possible, and he truly believes in the game as a method of outreach and evangelism, and uses that to shape his involvement.

I am not familiar with the listed players, but I think there are two players who have earned a spot in the HoF. My votes are Joshua Hey and Eric Kimmons.

For contributors it is much more difficult, but I happen to know two who have made an impact on my redemption career. First is Jon Michaliszyn.  If it wasn't for his booth at Creation I would of never got started in Redemption. His commitment to reaching out to future players is by far recognizable. My other vote is for Reyzen. He is another contributor who connects with young players, and is an ambassador to the game. I've heard him being coined the "godfather of redemption" before.

Randall Koutnik - pretty much responsible for Redemption activity in WNY, without him our State Tournament Host wouldn't be from round here. Also created the now revived Redemption Wiki that has become the new place to go for card information with the death of the web based reg.

John Michaliszyn - everything he does with Creation, and I almost have to vote for him if I'm voting for Randall considering the role he had in Randall's success.

Greeson - The only player that I try to actively avoid playing against to save my self confidence.

Sam Nurge - because booster and sealed are a measure of person's pure redemption skill, not the amount of cards he can afford

Players:
- Jonathan Greeson.  Only player who could consistently beat me.  Once knocked me from 1st to 4th place in the final round of a tournament with a three-turn win.
- John Early.  All around great guy.

Contributors:
- Me.  (I'm allowed to do that, right?)  I'm totally psyched to see that one of the seed playgroups I helped start is hosting NY States.  Go them!
- John Michaliszyn.  Seriously.  How is he not in the HoF already?
