There's no perfect gift. You need to take into account who you're giving it to and how much you're willing to spend.

im just looking for some brainstorming of some cool gifts. doesnt matter who i give it to, and money is not a problem.

In that case, I could really use a PS3 (just for the Blu-Ray, though). ;)
Give the gift of Netflix. My brother-in-law gave us a 4-month gift subscription. It was easy to set up the account, and we got to customize the choices to our liking. That makes it a versatile gift for anyone, of any age or interest.

+1 with YMT on NetFlix.
Actually, I would go one step further and buy Roku box to go along with the Netflix subscription. Roku rox!

Anyway it depends upon who the gift is for, for boys 3+ I would suggest Legos.
The first season of Lost is good, you can find it for very cheap second hand now a days.
Or Firefly, you can never go wrong with Firefly

Redemption. I was thinking about giving my friend my Elijah promo for christmas. But I ended up getting him something that he needed more than that

For me, music is a great gift. You can buy cd's give them gift cards to FYI or wherever. I think music is universal...

Their own private island stocked with servants, a mansion, food, etc.
Oh...You wanted practical ideas didn't you. Gift cards to walmart are always good.

If you are giving to couples (or even small families) a netflix subscription is great or just a gift card to a movie rental place with a bucket of popcorn and some candy. We did that for a guy we know and his wife, for a birthday, they loved it. You can find the popcorn that is already in the bucket (Act II I think) and put the rest in the bucket.
For single or younger guys (or gamer girls) Gamefly subscriptions.
Older movies rereleased on DVD are great! (I am looking for Monty Python and the Holy Grail, my VHS copy got eaten by my vcr.)
