Gaming Laptop vs. Desktop + Netbook

I'm starting college in the fall, and this summer I'm working as a lifeguard at a camp to help pay for some of my expenses. One of those expenses is going to be a gaming PC of some sort. I have two options though. I can spend money to get a nice laptop with good specs to handle high-end gaming (I'd like it to be able to handle Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim coming out in November), or I can get a desktop with similar specs, and pick up a netbook as well for use with taking notes in class, and that sort of thing. Any advice on which I should get?

If they're about the same price get desktop and notebook.
Unless you're traveling a lot you'll just end up using the laptop as a desktop anyway  :P
An unanswered question is infinitely better than an unquestioned answer.

Desktop + laptop.

Laptops will always be inferior for gaming.

I'd go less expensive laptop (good enough to handle some decent games) + XBOX360/PS3

 ;D

p.s. You can always get a mouse, keyboard, external speakers, and external monitor to make your laptop a "desktop".

He could if he wanted inferior controls and graphics.  ;)

Why not just get a desktop then.

Also, good luck finding a nice 20"+ monitor on a laptop.

my two computers right now are....

XPS desktop: 2.4 core 2 quad, dual 8800GT 512mb cards in SLI, 4gb ram, 1tb hard drive. 23" 2048x1152 monitor
Macbook Pro (dual booted with XP): 3.2 core 2 duo, 9600M GT 512mb, 4gb ram, 500gb hard drive. 17" 1920x1200 screen

My desktop is almost 3 years old and cost about $800 less. I only got a MBP because my college required it... even though i have yet to seriously use the Mac OS on it.

Combined, I've got 40" of monitor on my PC now.  My netbook (only used for internet and coding away from the dorm) only has 10.1".  I'd really recommend getting two different computers.  The extended battery life alone should convince you.

Go with a Desktop and Netbook. If you build your own desktop then you will be a lot happier with the result and save money plus netbooks are only like for the $300 for the high end. Also you wont be lugging around a 10 pound laptop with horrible battery life to all of your classes. If you need any help building a desktop or have questions feel free to pm me I have built a couple desktops in my short time on this planet.
