Title: Forum Upgrade at 6pm Eastern
Post by: The Schaef on May 11, 2011, 04:57:42 PM
At 6pm Eastern today (5/11), the forum will be going down to facilitate an upgrade.  Every attempt will be made to minimize the downtime, and hopefully we'll be rocking the new version in very short order.

Thank you in advance for your patience and cooperation.

Forum now upgraded and reopened.  This thread is now a place to post feedback, including any issues you may have found that need to be addressed.

Among the new features, you can post a status to your profile - helpful perhaps for people LFG, though I will tinker with this more in the days to come.

Member map.  You can tag your location in your profile.  Use with care, especially if you're worried a creepy old man may try to track you down.

Links.  I'll be populating this soon.

Instant feedback when someone replies to your topics.

Warning system is now folded into the board, but only mods and warned users will see it, unless we decide it needs to become a scarlet letter again.

You can set your region in your profile.  Recommend that those who are not actually in the East Central Region go change that now.

I'm also developing some theme variants, so keep an eye out for those.

Post up/downing is coming back soon.

You'll also find a lot of the URL addresses will be much cleaner and easier to read than ?action=x&topic=y&post=#1468486146168146.  You're welcome.

HEYYYY, it's actually wide on my widescreen monitor now!

I noticed i got a little in-window popup message about a reply to my post when I logged in. Does this happen live or only when you "update the page" by clicking a link or refreshing?

I also have to agree, I like the look as well.

That happens live from what I've seen.

One minor glitch I just noticed...

RR's name runs into his post titles.  ;D

add new smileys to the list of updates as well.

Glitch?  RR paid off Schaef so that everyone could see his name in all it's glory.

HEYYYY, it's actually wide on my widescreen monitor now!

I thought you ("you" meaning widescreen users) would appreciate the flexibility of the new theme.

A lot of old themes got trashed but we'll see what we can work out for that.  I prefer to stay away from graphics-heavy themes that result in the message "waaah, I can't see teh menu optionz0rz for teh articles" or whatever.

what happened to Chess?  I can't find it, I was in the middle of a game....  :(
Title: Re: Forum Upgrade at 6pm Eastern

I'm still feeling out the whole thing with profile status.  I'm also trying to implement a trader rating system but we'll see if that works or not.

Chess is currently down; I will see what I can do about getting it back.  It was my impression that hardly anyone played any more.

Other than the sluggishness of page loading, I like the changes overall.

I did notice that Chess is missing from the menu row at the top. Will that be added back soon? Also, when viewing any specific forum post or thread or "recent new posts", etc., there's an awkward yellow box at the right end of the menu row that has the same URL as where you're currently visiting. It's nothing big, slightly annoying perhaps, but not important. Just figured I'd mention it jic.

Hey,

It seems that pages never finish loading.  They load but then continue "waiting for www.cactusgamedesign.com..." indefinitely.  Which has the annoying side effect that if I ask it to load multiple pages at once, my browser can't do it.

The "Forum" Link is missing from the options at the top of the page.

Tschow,

As mentioned above, people offline are lighter and people online are at full resolution.  Also, images get squeezed to 65x65 so if it's larger than that, you pay for what you get.

Another note to people: you can now set calendar events to send you notifications up to a week in advance of the date of the tournament.

So, more than just Karazy's username, it seems anything in the box to the left of each post (with user information) that is wider than the width but doesn't have spaces just continues on into the post content, and it makes it kinda hard to read posts a lot of times.

I would +1 you, but the upgrade won't allow me to because of how bad it is.

On a serious note, I love the upgrade. I was having so many issues with how slow it was running, and now it's great. Tolkien is a misfortune, and once we get the +1/-1 system back, I'll be okay.

Looks like I'm going to have to retool the theming, though, because people aren't picking up on the variants buried in the multicolor theme.  Kind of a shame, really, I liked having one theme for what is essentially the same layout rather than eight or nine.

That's new.  It's one of the reasons I had been wanting to move to this version for several months.

Unfortunately, one of the other reasons, the improved thumb-up system, isn't working properly (it was one of the two things killing the server yesterday).  so that's on my short list.

As soon as I remember the password for my mysql database I can get a test smf up on my server to make themes on too. now if only i could remember the password

So far I'm liking it... the thing about the chess game that delarosajon mentioned is that Particular game has been going on since just before I left for Coast Guard bootcamp 9 months ago... yeah, a little nostalgia there lol. Title: Re: Forum Upgrade at 6pm Eastern
Post by: The Schaef on May 15, 2011, 07:33:18 PM
You can express disapproval of a post by reporting it.  If it's not something that warrants the intervention of a moderator, then the only thing that minusing it will do is tear the poster down for an otherwise valid post.
Title: Re: Forum Upgrade at 6pm Eastern
Post by: SomeKittens on May 15, 2011, 08:22:41 PM
If a post qualifies for reporting, I report it.  It's not often that this happens.  When a post falls into the continuum better than reporting, but isn't useful, that's when -1 has a point for me.  If a post is spammy, disrespectful, or otherwise useless, I'll -1 one it.

NEW UPDATES

Coinciding with the beta launch of the new Google+, users may now find a Google Plus icon on the FIRST post of a topic.  I don't see a point right away in allowing users to G+ any post on any thread, but this might be a good way to hotlink threads as a whole.

Also, mobile users with Tapatalk may now find that the boards can run natively on their iPhone, Android or Crackberry.

And when you post something long (a card description from the REG, for example; or a long sentence like this one), it doesn't automatically fit it into a line, it just keeps going off the side. In fact, it is doing this as I type. If you get too far away, you actually lose everything except the text box.

It's super annoying that everytime I try to view a new page of the boards I get a pop up about tapatalk and the page stops loading. every single new page.

I'm not sure whether you mean in a regular browser or in Tapatalk, but I have not experienced that problem in either format.

I have never seen that happen on any forum I've visited that uses Tapatalk, beyond the very first time I visited the site.  I even just now cleared my cache and history from my phone, restarted my browser and went to the Cactus page and it still did not give me the popup any more.

I am using IE and it is happening to me. It is very annoying (like me!).

Happens in Chrome too. some of the posts have scroll bars so you can read the whole thing, some don't. Probably a chrome bug. To the guy using IE still lolwhy??

I'm using IE as well (it's the only default browser on my work computer and I can't install anything else on this computer) but I have experienced no such problems.

I did see the tapatalk ad come up on my android though...anyone willing to explain what it is, and if it's worth the $3 to download it?

My text bar when posting is like, hyper stretched out to the right now.... kinda annoying when quoting big amounts of text.

I use Chrome if it helps.

Same problem here, under Chrome.  Thanks for fixing the quote boxes so I could actually read them.

Quote boxes got changed. Other noticeable updates seem to have been redanted for now due to complaints and issues.

Native interface browsing instead of tangling with navigating the site on the tiny viewport.

Am I the only one that clicked OK when that message came up, or something?

Yeah I clicked "Ok" and then didn't buy the app and it only came up the once.

still comes up for me, despite clicking ok. It did stop popping up a couple times after hitting ok, but trust me...it will return.

The one line thing has been fixed, but the hyper stretched reply box has not.

I'm using Firefox, and I also have the problem where if I type further than here_________________________________________________________I can't see what I'm typing anymore.

I do like that it auto-corrects all ellipsis longer than three periods to three.

For people who have the super-wide reply bar:

There is a new formatting button in the WYSIWYG controls, that looks like a cursor arrow in brackets.  Toggling that button on or off will "auto-wrap" your reply box back down to the width of the forum layout.

I'm sorry but could you say that in English for Dummies. I don't speak Acronymese.

WYSIWYG = What You See Is What You Get.
Though usually, it's WYSIWTF(hqwgads).

I still can, so I don't know what you're talking about.  Nothing "happened" to them.

Bookmarks are still TBD.  I started a new job last week so I don't have the hours to dedicate to addressing the various pieces of the forum, but I do want to get themes and bookmarks working again soon.

One (hopefully small) request while you're working on the themes, would it be possible to have one that just shares the colors of the old Metallistic theme?

Is there a way to permanently toggle that button?

Oh, and congrats on the job Schaef!
