Hence the BILLIONS spent on advertising and marketing because of the power of persuasion.
This is a GREAT point.  Companies wouldn't spend billions of dollars on something if what people watched DIDN'T affect them.

I agree that humans can be a gullible lot, and I agree that we should use discernment in what we allow to influence our thinking and behavior.  But the point is that we CAN use discernment.  I encourage people to choose wisely what to do with their time but I worry about throwing out the baby with the bathwater, stifling our innate desire to imagine things that don't exist or that we would not do ourselves.  A deeper knowledge of humans can arise...
I also agree that we can use discernment when filtering what we watch.  But we can also use discernment to avoid watching some things to begin with.  The Bible contains some graphic stuff, but is there for the purpose of teaching us who God is and who He wants us to be.  Therefore, reading the Bible is a good thing to do despite the need to filter out what parts to emulate.  Transformers 2 is merely eye candy and meant to entertain, not to give a deeper knowledge of humans.  Watching something that is vile to God solely for the purpose of entertainment is probably a bad thing.

I don't understand what you're trying to differentiate here.  To avoid watching something IS an exercise of discernment, so basically you're saying "but" when repeating back to me what I just said.  Was it really your understanding that I was telling people that they should watch absolutely everything they can possibly expose themselves to and trust their brain to do all the filtering post facto?

Transformers 2 is merely eye candy and meant to entertain, not to give a deeper knowledge of humans.

I'm not convinced that's the case.  It's not exactly Citizen Kane but one of the most effective ways to explore the human condition is to observe it from a non-human viewpoint.

Did you really have URGES? Cause that's dangerous. Or did you just like think about it? That's different.

Yes, they were actual urges.  I had to try hard sometimes to keep myself from turning the wheel into some one next to me.  The urges went away when I stopped playing the game.

3) When my wife and I had the CSI marathon, after a few days, I was actually enjoying figuring out different ways we could die and how it could be used for the show
They don't really die for that show... I'm not sure why you were doing that. Just be a writer for CSI. ;)

However, how is thinking about death all day bringing glory to God and filling your mind with pure/holy/honorable things?

5) How many people have come to Christ or have grown stronger in him by movies like Passion and Facing The Giants (but they must all be fooled because movies have no effect on us).
I can't think of any. When I saw Facing the Giants I just thought how sad it was that Christians don't have a budget to make a good movie.

I actually know people who came to Christ after watching Passion and all the movies from the church (forget the name) have inspired me in one way or another.

6) My brother, after seeing the first matrix movie, actually laid on the ground and tried to rise up like Agent Smith did in the subway fight.

We all think it would be cool to be able to do something that is actually beyond our abilities.  The fact that you are completely unable to just go voooop and go from your back to a standing position illustrates the fantasy and "wow" factor of the agent's ability.

The whole point of my post was to illustrate that you can have great parents and still do some really stupid things after watching something.  Media can influence people to do things they wouldn’t even consider doing because it looked cool when they saw it (and they don’t realize the practice and the other multiple aspect of the scene).  It can also literarily change how you view the world.

and the whole point of MY post is that people have done stupid stuff centuries millenia before a television ever existed.

I will be watching G.I. Joe tonight (Yay Netflix!). I'll let you know how it was compared to my other favorites.

UP! is still my top movie so far.

Well then to put it quite bluntly that's not safe and you should stop driving. 99.9999999% of people I'd guess don't have to stop themselves from almost killing other human beings.

Same here, I can shoot at pixels all day long... but then put a real gun in my hands, and I would absolutely NEVER so much as pretend to aim it at someone, unless its like, stripped down to a point where it's obvious the thing could not shoot. Even then I wouldn't really do that. Only "guns" i would aim at someone are airsoft, paintball, and water guns.

1) I didn’t have the urge to kill, just an urge to wreck.

2) I have never had that urge before I played and have never had that urge once I stopped playing.  I see that as most than just a coincident.

3) I also have played plenty of FPS, war games, magic games and all they do is play with my imagination but no more than anyone’s imagination (who hasn’t pretended to be a great wizard or a ninja or whatever)

4) That time was also during my insanity time so that probably had an affect on the influence as well (but that’s another story and another time ).

5) Speaking of five, it’s five o-clock and I should get going :P

Don’t worry about me going crazy on others.  I’m one of the timid ones .

That's a huge confounding factor that seriously should not be left out of consideration.  That's a little like saying "Ever since watching that one TV show, I am totally unable to play the piano.  The media has a strong influence on my thinking, and it negatively affects my coordination.  On a completely unrelated note, I have no arms."

First of all, that is really funny!

Second of all I would like to repeat an important point that was ignored when Soul Seeker made it, and ignored again when I made it.

This thread is still being taken from a "normal" person's persepctive. My problem with violent movies in particular is that they are educating the people who are leaning toward committing crimes anyway. Instead of some whacko saying, "I think I'll go kill someone today," they are watching horror movies about serial killers and saying, "I think I'll try that." However, they are more likely to get away with their crimes because the movie industry has spent BILLIONS to create "genius" killers who outsmart police. The actual killers in our world are probably not nearly that smart, but they get great ideas from Hollywood.

Can you explain why you would think a point was ignored if I agreed with it before you did?

Again, graphic depictions of violence vastly predate the motion picture.  This point no more implicates modern media than it does the Bible.

Simple miscommunication Schaef.  Firstly, I didn't understand you comment to be agreeing with SS's.  Now that I go back and specifically look for it, I can see where that might be the case.

Secondly, my last post had 2 parts.  The first (a compliment) was directed at you.  The second was not.  I apologize for the confusion.

Once again this does not seem to agree with you saying media influences people. If you enjoyed it then the writers did their job by attracting you, but CSI is a murder crime scene show, so you enjoying how to die is completely opposite of what the show does. If anything you could get another crap article online about people saying they can get away with murder due to CSI, that would help your cause. But then once someone does that I will post facts about how the crime rate in every major city is down and still declining, which does not help any of these guys saying media makes you do things.

Seriously...? Nice sarcasm on the end. I think everyone is not saying that movies do not effect people, this is another terrible quote. I do not even know where to start on this one. We, well I am at least, is/are saying movies do not make you go out and do things, but yes they persuade you. But why is no one saying anything like, what about books? Books do the same thing yet I do not see articles on that, is it not the same thing?

...good for your brother. Once again this does not help your point at all. This does not harm anyone in one way. Had your brother after seeing The Matrix tried to jump a building or something more drastic, then you can have a point. But this is like me seeing a baseball movie, I wanna go play baseball afterwards...ok cool I don't harm anyone though.
Sorry I am not bashing you just I do not agree with your points.

I disagree. The criminals have to witness the events you are referring to for it to be a comparable example. Even then, they didn't get to rewind and replay their favorites killing scenes. "Watching about" and "reading about" are vastly different experiences, especially for the uneducated.

I don't know how you're defining "witness" for the purposes of differentiation, since both examples are fictionalized.  Besides, stage plays have employed various visceral effects in their production and those have been in use for centuries.  Would that not provide the effect you seem to think is they lynchpin for making this the only format worth worrying about?  Or more so since it's taking place "live"?

Quote
Even then, they didn't get to rewind and replay their favorites killing scenes.

Do you have some special kind of collection of pictures, or audio recordings, or books, and so on, which a person is physically incapable of looking at a second time?  Last week I fell asleep reading a book, and couldn't remember exactly where I left off, so I went back and read the same section again.  Additionally, if I miss a TV show, or use the bathroom while at a movie theater, I don't get to contact the TV station or the projection booth and ask them to rewind and replay anything.

Quote
"Watching about" and "reading about" are vastly different experiences, especially for the uneducated.

Of course they're different but only because of the senses that are engaged.  Besides, arguing to lack of education works against you because diminishing the odds that the scofflaw can even read also drastically reduces his odds of actually being able to pull off a feat of any real complexity.  If I were you, I'd worry more about the ones who read.

I'm still waiting for an explanation of how motion picture media is persuasive in a way that other media are not.

You're welcome.... whatever "disingenuous argument" means.

Now, back on topic:

I did not like G.I. Joe. Although it might have been a movie I could stomach on my own, it was much too graphic for my son. Even my wife left shortly after it began. I am disappointed that these producers felt a need to "modernize" my childhood toys. What a waste.
