Hence the BILLIONS spent on advertising and marketing because of the power of persuasion.
I agree that humans can be a gullible lot, and I agree that we should use discernment in what we allow to influence our thinking and behavior. But the point is that we CAN use discernment. I encourage people to choose wisely what to do with their time but I worry about throwing out the baby with the bathwater, stifling our innate desire to imagine things that don't exist or that we would not do ourselves. A deeper knowledge of humans can arise...
I also agree that we can use discernment when filtering what we watch. But we can also use discernment to avoid watching some things to begin with.
Transformers 2 is merely eye candy and meant to entertain, not to give a deeper knowledge of humans.

I'm not sure why you were doing that. Just be a writer for CSI.

When I saw Facing the Giants I just thought how sad it was that Christians don't have a budget to make a good movie.

Quote6) My brother, after seeing the first matrix movie, actually laid on the ground and tried to rise up like Agent Smith did in the subway fight. We all think it would be cool to be able to do something that is actually beyond our abilities. The fact that you are completely unable to just go voooop and go from your back to a standing position illustrates the fantasy and "wow" factor of the agent's ability.

The whole point of my post was to illustrate that you can have great parents and still do some really stupid things after watching something.

The urges went away when I stopped playing the game.

2) I have never had that urge before I played and have never had that urge once I stopped playing. I see that as most than just a coincident.3) I also have played plenty of FPS, war games, magic games and all they do is play with my imagination but no more than anyone’s imagination (who hasn’t pretended to be a great wizard or a ninja or whatever)
4) That time was also during my insanity time so that probably had an affect on the influence as well (but that’s another story and another time ).
That's a huge confounding factor that seriously should not be left out of consideration. That's a little like saying "Ever since watching that one TV show, I am totally unable to play the piano. The media has a strong influence on my thinking, and it negatively affects my coordination. On a completely unrelated note, I have no arms."
Quote from: soul seeker on November 08, 2009, 03:23:09 PMHence the BILLIONS spent on advertising and marketing because of the power of persuasion. This is a GREAT point. Companies wouldn't spend billions of dollars on something if what people watched DIDN'T affect them.
Second of all I would like to repeat an important point that was ignored when Soul Seeker made it, and ignored again when I made it.
My problem with violent movies in particular is that they are educating the people who are leaning toward committing crimes anyway.

He said the point was ignored, without qualification. And he said it directly in response to something I said.

And I completely agree with you. I was aiming my post at those who thing the artical had just a bunch of neglected kids in it.
Again, graphic depictions of violence vastly predate the motion picture. This point no more implicates modern media than it does the Bible.
The criminals have to witness the events you are referring to for it to be a comparable example.
Even then, they didn't get to rewind and replay their favorites killing scenes.
"Watching about" and "reading about" are vastly different experiences, especially for the uneducated.
I'm still waiting for an explanation of how motion picture media is persuasive in a way that other media are not.
You wait for something that you won't hear because you won't hear what you don't want to hear.
Quote from: YourMathTeacher on November 10, 2009, 04:58:26 PMYou wait for something that you won't hear because you won't hear what you don't want to hear.Well, the good news is that will probably be the deepest insult I'll have to read today, so the rest of my evening can only be uphill. So thanks for the accusation of disingenuous argument.
