Sad....  Even putting C.S. Lewis next to ... that guy.
(even further off topic: Pretty crazy how he's so famous with a name like Clive Staples)

Well, I didn't know his name was Clive Staples until about 4 years after I started reading his books.

I think the best way to be encouraged is to deliberately not go for it.  But heck, I've only got six, so what do I know.

Not true. The best way to get encouragement is to offer to trade packs for it.

At the time of that last post, I had 0 encouragement.  I now have 2.  Clearly, it worked. ;)

I just think that its encouraging to see all the encouragement.  Isnt that the true point? When you see others being built up to feel better about yourself as well?

Yep.  But then people get all competitive.

good question.  The answer to that is the driving force behind the US economy.

The US economy is a system of exchanging money for goods and services.  Giving and receiving these points achieves nothing tangible for either party.  I don't think "I agree with the content of your post" is the driving force behind the US economy.

Well, one thing about this system... you don't even know what post someone liked. I think it'd be better for the + 1 thing to be on the individual posts.

The exchange of goods and services is not the driving force.  The driving force is what causes said exchange.  In the American economy, people buy (on credit) things that make them look better (Purses, iPads, etc) so that they can be better than everyone else.
Specific example: Farmville.  I hate it on a personal level, but love it on a business level.  Firstly, all your friends can see how you're doing, and you're ranked among your friends.  Now, for only $20 or so, you can become the best on this ranking system.
This doesn't get you anything tangible.  Nor is it useful as an investment.  The reason someone will spend this money is to show that they're better than everyone else (pride!)

Now, how does this relate to encouragement?  Ever since we were young, we've been taught that having better numbers than everyone else makes us better.  (Grades, Sports scores)  Now, a new number pops up, and subconsciously, everyone wants to have the best number, because that's what we link our identity to (generally speaking).
I don't think there's anything wrong with offering packs for encouragement, or tattoos.  Just remember that your encouragement is only a number.

i agree with lambo, having a thumbs up/thumbs down for each individual post would be much better than this system.

I was on another forum where they had per-post and overall, but up and down voting were both enabled.  The problem was that people took it far to seriously and argued endlessly about it.
If TheWarrior tried to pull the same stunt over there, he would most likely have been banned.

I personally didn't like the system because people kept voting down my posts about Jesus.

That's sort of my point: they don't do anything.

As to the other comments, I disabled thumb-downing before I even turned it on, so as to avoid that exact problem.  There is no per-post support in this version of the forums and I lack the time and programming expertise to do a custom job just for this.  So for the moment, it's this or nothing.

I don't think "I agree with the content of your post" is the driving force behind the US economy.
The folks at Mattel who paid $3.8 billion for The Learning Company would disagree with you. As would all the people who invested in TheGlobe.com, Boo.com, and InfoSpace.
