Politicians may be hypocritical, but that doenst mean that the policies that they impliment are always hypocritical.  and sometimes big government has to be the catcher in the rye for those who are unable see the big picture.  if left to our own devices we likely would not have dealt with the Ozone layer until we all got skin cancer and it was too late.

The problem with turning things over to "big government" is that they, too, only see what they want to see.  Pay anyone enough money and they will say whatever you want to say.  Most in congress wants to make sure that they are re-elected and to get their own agendas passed.  There are scientists all over that state that our effect on the earth is very small.

Here's a quote from a climatologist:

The main problem is not the government’s fault.  It’s actually the people who just go along with the ads they see and not research the company itself.  If more and more people start taking care of it, then the impact on our lives would be better.  And besides, the more regulations we put on business, the more they will leave our country and go to a place that doesn’t have the regulations.  Once they do that, we will have all the regulations we can have but then we would also have no jobs here.

The federal government's job is to protect people from other people, police fraud, and establish currency. Nowhere in that description does environmentalism play any sort of role.

IMO, the federal government's only jobs should be to establish currency, regulate transportation and communication systems, and maintain a defensive military force. Local governments should have ultimate power over everything else, especially including lawmaking. (Yes, this is going a little off-topic, but I just wanted to say this.)
