Politicians may be hypocritical, but that doenst mean that the policies that they impliment are always hypocritical.  and sometimes big government has to be the catcher in the rye for those who are unable see the big picture.  if left to our own devices we likely would not have dealt with the Ozone layer until we all got skin cancer and it was too late.

The problem with turning things over to "big government" is that they, too, only see what they want to see.  Pay anyone enough money and they will say whatever you want to say.  Most in congress wants to make sure that they are re-elected and to get their own agendas passed.  There are scientists all over that state that our effect on the earth is very small.

Here's a quote from a climatologist:

The questions was, What about the better-safe-than-sorry argument? Even if there's a chance Gore and Hansen are wrong, shouldn't we still take action in order to protect ourselves from catastrophe, just in case they're right?

His answer was:

Quote
The problem is that the solutions being offered don't provide any detectable relief from this so-called catastrophe. Congress is now discussing an 80% reduction in U.S. greenhouse emissions by 2050. That's basically the equivalent of building 1,000 new nuclear power plants all operating by 2020. Now I'm all in favor of nuclear energy, but that would affect the global temperature by only seven-hundredths of a degree by 2050 and fifteen hundredths by 2100. We wouldn't even notice it.

The main problem is not the government’s fault.  It’s actually the people who just go along with the ads they see and not research the company itself.  If more and more people start taking care of it, then the impact on our lives would be better.  And besides, the more regulations we put on business, the more they will leave our country and go to a place that doesn’t have the regulations.  Once they do that, we will have all the regulations we can have but then we would also have no jobs here.

All of these were implimented using the imperfect system of government that we have.  If the Government had not stepped in, we would all still be paying the social cost of these corporate practices with our lives.
Government can and must do what no other entity can do: pass laws that protect its citizens from harmful toxins.  Of course it was right to remove lead from fuel and paint.  Of course it was right to remove asbestos and other cancer-causing agents from building materials.  When something has been proven to be harmful/hazardous to the health of citizens of the U.S., and that harm is being spewed into the air we all breathe, or into the water we all drink, then that is an acceptable use of government.  But the government does not have to be big and intruding to present simple bans on things like lead and asbestos.  When it starts punishing people for having large families, large cars to carry those families, large water bills (to bathe those families, water their yard and trees), large T.V.s so the whole family can watch together, etc. ... THAT is where it crosses the line.

The federal government's job is to protect people from other people, police fraud, and establish currency. Nowhere in that description does environmentalism play any sort of role.
I am not talking about T2 unless I am explicitly talking about T2. Also Mayhem is fine now somehow!

Well, iam glad to see that as christians we are leading the way in environmental protection.  It seems so refreshing to see so many christians posting in favor of the rape of the natural world, when God clearly called us to be good stewards of his gift to us..

But go ahead!  Jump right in bed with Corporate intrests and environmental mis-management because clearly they have the earths best intrests in heart.  and of course..If JESUS were here, he would clearly slam another 64 oz big gulp as he cruised down the road in his new H3 leaving a carbon footprint big enough to stop a team of oxen in their tracks.

seriously, go ahead an align conservative Christianity..or any christianity as far as that goes with those intrests...God loves a strong economy..ESPECIALLY at the expense of the earth...its in the bible...

Are you saying I should become an earth worshipping enviromentalist?

I don't get why it made you so mad. God has things under control. Don't worry

IMO, the federal government's only jobs should be to establish currency, regulate transportation and communication systems, and maintain a defensive military force. Local governments should have ultimate power over everything else, especially including lawmaking. (Yes, this is going a little off-topic, but I just wanted to say this.) :2cents:
