I realized I never got back to this topic, and time is of the essence as My Droid Pro is on its last legs, and the rep at Verizon really did not care whether or not he made any money that day (worst service I've ever had at the store, and Gretel and I were the only customers there on a weekday afternoon when we visited during her Spring Break). So here is what I am seeing:

Verizon gets rid of my unlimited data plan (which is fine because I only use about 100mb a month for web browsing, downloads, and mobile GPS) so now instead of paying 109.99 a month for Gretel and my phone for 700 minutes and 500 texts per phone, we move to a 2GB plan, unlimited minutes, and unlimited text for about 20.00 more a month and now we both get smartphones. However, I was told that our data usage will go up using a 4g phone over 3g? Fact or Fiction?

As for the phones themselves, I am down to 3: The Galaxy S3, the Stratosphere 2, or the Droid DNA. I liked the keyboard response of the Stratosphere 2 as I made few corrections when browsing or composing emails. However, the negative responses from Verizon customers on their own feedback site on this phone concerns me greatly. I could probably get used to the S3 but the Droid DNA also seems to be just as good...Not sure that the S4 is for me though...

Here are the priorities for our phones:
1) Good connection with calls: Sometimes when we talk to people on our phones in our apartment we get this irritating tinning sound, almost like a metronome. We've refreshed our tower connection, but it does not seem to do help
2) Good voice connection with FORD Microsoft SYNC system. Gretel does a lot of calling from our car hands-free and often people do not seem to hear her so well. I have yet to find a good consumer reports for the best phone to use with this system.
3) Good connection overall: If we are getting a 4G phone, then I better have 4G browsing, not waiting up to a minute to access the boards webpage or weather.com for example. Most of the time we are in the DC area, which I see is supposed to be 4G quality.
4) A durable case: my otterbox makes my Droid Pro nearly indestructible without imparing my usage, I need the same for my next phone.
5) A good keyboard that leads to minimal corrections

And this one will be for Gretel
6) Her first smartphone. She wants the flexibility that I have (GPS, Browser on the fly, etc) but she doesn't want to be bogged down in the interface.

Also, no IPhones. I didn't list it for a reason  ;D. That being said my fellow geeks, show me what you got. The good, the bad, and the ugly!

Fiction. Data is data, it's the same size regardless of your connection the only difference is that things download faster so people tend to USE more data but not because of the connection but rather because they do things like watch Youtube videos in 1080p instead of 480p or 720p because they can without it buffering. In short, you use as much data as you choose to use, the connection does not inherently cause you to use more.

Have you looked at the Droid 4 at all? Very reliable, full slide out keyboard like the Stratosphere, all the new Android updates. Not sure if it's still available but it should be.

Either the Droid 4, the DNA, or the Razr Max HD. The Razr Max HD is the phone i've been looking at getting but it doesn't have a slide out keyboard so that might be a deal breaker for one or both of you.

I was in the middle of a very long post when either my browser or the forum crashed temporarily. Fortunately, lp provided much more succinct info for you. He is correct about the data issue; if you don't stream video or audio that much, then you will not see a difference in your data usage. But if you are still leery, you can always turn off the LTE. I will say that I love my S3 for a variety of reasons, the only drawback is it is really awkward to hold a phone that size to your head to talk. I usually use my headset at work, which is the main time I would talk on that phone, so it's not a big problem.

AFAIK, you can get an OtterBox for any of the major phone models (I know there is one for the S3). I just use a silicone cover for mine, and it has survived many drops from ~4 feet up.

The Razr Maxx HD is the most popular phone among my coworkers (I work for Verizon), with the DNA and S3 being the other most popular models. I don't know anything about the Stratosphere or Droid 4, but I could probably find out anything you'd like.

As for the connection issues, that is most likely an issue with your older phone, but there could be some other external interference creating noise. Have you talked to any neighbors to see if they experience those issues? As for Verizon's 4G speeds, they really are the most consistent (though AT&T is slightly faster in some areas). I would be surprised if you had slow 4G anywhere in the DC area not in a basement or concrete tunnel. I'm not familiar with SYNC, but I assume it is bluetooth; if so the bluetooth headset works great with my S3. Obviously cars are a whole different environment as far as potential interfering signals as my office, so I can't promise anything without knowing more about the system, but I don't think it would be an issue.

As for the keyboard, it's one of my favorite things about the S3. It's an onscreen keyboard of course, but the haptic feedback and the size of the phone make it pretty user-friendly. Also, the predictive text is nice (if you type "I'm" it might come up with "sorry" "hungry" "awesome" etc.) as a time saver.

Have you checked the REG?
Have you looked it up in ORCID?
