Cyber Bullying

Apparently some states have "Cyber bullying" laws that can get you in trouble for being mean on the internet. Two questions:

1. Do any states have an irl equivalent? In other words, can I be arrested for being mean to people?
2.a If not, why is it ok to do it to someone's face but not online?
2.b If so, how on earth is that not infringing upon freedom of speech? Do people have the right to niceness?

1. yes
2. n/a
3. the rl version of cyber bullying isn't simply talking bad to someone, it would be like threatening them.
is not being allowed to threaten someone, infringing on our freedom of speech ;)

That's not the same thing. According to YMT, you can be arrested just for calling people names online. That's certainly not equivalent to threatening people.

Cyber bulling is one of those the crimes that seems to only be invoked after someone dies (typically through suicide). Frankly, it's kind of a stupid concept. I don't mean that offensively, so I apologize if you are passionate about the issue, but I just don't see it having much to go along with it.

I think that bullying is one of those things that people accept because it happens to everybody in some fashion...even tough it shouldn't....I believe that bullying irl or cyber is a form of harassment. There are people who have taken their lives because of this unthinkable act....if that doesn't send a message that bullying is real and can harm people, idk what will.

I don't think that Pol's point is that stopping bullying isn't important, but why is it so much stricter on the intarwebz than in real life.

Because:
A.) Internets are anonymous (and legion)
B.) Politicians don't know how to internet.

That is not true. To my knowledge, you can only be arrested (and only in some states) for electronically threatening (usually has to be repeated to warrant arrest) or if the person harassing is >21 years old and the harassed is <17 years old

Cyber bullying is commonly defined and limited to acts between minors, although some states also use the term to apply to electronic interactions between adults or between adults and children.

I just looked up the particular law in question, and it turns out that it does indeed only apply to children not out of high school, and applies almost equally irl. This is what I get for starting a thread in the middle of the night before actually checking out the premise.

You can keep this thread alive by asking why it is illegal for kids to be mean.

I would very much like to know that myself, but it's illegal to have a toilet with more than 1.6 gallons of water in the tank so I'd assume the answer is "because Uncle Sam thinks he's your lord and master."

We just talked about this same principles in my MicroEcon class. Luckily I have a stern supporter of Adam Smith as my teacher.
