Broken computer(s)
« on: February 16, 2011, 11:43:55 AM »

Well in the past few months all 3 of our computers have broken in my house. Needless to say I'm quite angry.
What happens is I start it up and it loads for a minute and then freezes which forces me to shut it off manually. The same thing has killed all 3 of the computers in the exact same way and I was wondering if any of you had some sort of advice. We got a new harddrive for one of em cause we think that's what the problem is but we don't have an XP boot disc for it so right now it's just a brick :P

That's rather impressive.  My best guess is a software bug/vulnerability.  What software did you have installed on all three?

Do you have any sort of disc in your computer? Someties That is why my computer will not start up. if so, take it out as well as any jump drives. When your computer is starting up, it may try to load the disc/jump drive when it is starting up causing the system to take longer to load.

Also, if you do not have anything like that in your computer, then make sure after you try to turn it on that the monitor is on, and all of the cords are plugged in.

We had XP for em(if that's what you meant). I used Glary Utilities on them before they broke several times and it couldn't find any problems within it's searching abilities.

And there are no discs in it. I would have loved to find out that was the problem haha

It's done both. Sometimes it'll freeze right away when I turn it on, and then sometimes it'll freeze right after I log in.

Have you tried booting it into safe mode?  (F8 at startup)

That was going to be my next suggestion as well :)

Something simmilar to what you're describing happened to me a few months ago, my videocard got fried. I'm not sure if that would happen to three computers in such a small timeframe, but I would suggest you check it out.
Your fan may also be clogged with dust, causing your videocard to overheat on startup.

Given that it's happened to all three, I don't think it's a hardware issue, unless the house is REALLY dusty.

Whenever it gives me the option to go into safemode it says "press up and down keys to go into blah blah blah" but the problem is my keyboard won't work when it's on there so I can't change it to safe mode :/

We vacuumed the first one and tried again and it didn't work.. But I guess it's worth a shot to try with this one too.

And our house is slightly dusty but not smokey. Haha

Most newer computers have a factory restore option. Basically just makes the computer like it was when you took it out of the box. What kind of computer (make and model) are you trying to fix first?

This could be viral, what happened to each computer before they stopped working?

The one we got a new harddrive for is from 05 soooo hahah no factory restore from that one

And there was nothing out of the ordinary before they broke. Just happened all of a sudden.

Somehow I got a disk check going on one of em and now it's working just fine. So idk! It's irksome forsure.

Well, good!  Run disk check on the others.  It doesn't make sense, but I've see weirder.

This just shows the importance of having a restore disk.

I haven't seen a computer produced in the past 10+ years that didn't have a factory restore option.  Some come with a disc (CD/DVD) while others have a "hidden partition" (built into the computer).  If you don't mind losing your data that would be your easiest fix for all three.

Google this "Brand Make Model # Factory Restore" (ex: Dell optiplex 1500 factory restore).  One of the first few results should let you know if there's a hidden partition and what key sequence to use at startup if you want to access it.
Have you visited the Land of Redemption today?

Yeah I guess it didn't stay working for long. It keeps freezing again :P

I don't think we mind losing all the data. We backed everything up on to discs as soon as it started acting screwy. And there was no disc that cane with it so I think I'll just have to google the hidden partition. It's worth a try

Lorenzo, If you can get to this it might work. Go to Start-All Programs- Accessories-System Tools-system restore. You will be able to load your computer the way it was before this started happening. Then on google search Microsoft Security Essentials. Sometimes your current virus software is already corrupted, and a new one can find the virus.      P.S I think I can get you that windows cd! I have free access to it with my computer class.
