my laptop got the windows blue screen of death this morning. i restarted it and tried system recovery, but then it asked me to select an operating system to do system recovery on, and there was none there. im guessing my entire laptop crashed. does anyone have any help they can give me? is all the information on my hard drive unrecoverable?

and yeah, this means i wont be on for awhile, as i now have limited access.

What version of Windows? If Vista or Windows 7, do you have the system disks? If you do, you can boot directly onto the disk and preform a system repair.

I was saying that MKC would probably not get a Mac. Macs aren't perfect for everyone (especially gamers)

The information on your hard drive may be recoverable, but it won't be easy to recover. Unless you are familiar with placing laptop hard drives into usb enclosures, then it may be quite easy. you can PM for more info if you need. I have done this type of recovery before.

A Mac & a Wii don't exactly make a gaming experience. If you like Mario Kart, SSBB, and Civilization, you might be fine. If you play anything FPS or games like that, you need a PC or an XBOX360.

he has an 360. so he can get a Mac. PC's aren't that great for gaming. 360s are.
Wii's are way more fun though.

And I have worked on both and them both Highly overrated. Macs aren't great at everything, There is no "best" system. Oh and people stop Hijacking this thread!!

This thread is about helping someone repair their laptop, not how they should replace it. Take the fanboyisim elsewhere

MKC, any chance you can write down the stuff on the blue screen? That tells you what the problem is. Just write the whole mess down if you can.

the OS is vista. not sure what you mean by system disks, but i believe i have 'recovery disks' that shipped with my laptop. are those the same?

(unfortunately?) i no longer get the blue screen, so i cant write anything down. all it does now when i turn it on is go to the screen that says if i would like to start windows normally or in safe mode. after selecting a choice, it eventually goes to a plain black screen with a mouse icon on it, nothing else. its stayed like that for hours until i decided to turn my laptop off.

i appreciate everyones help so far!

System disks are the same as recovery disks.

Sounds like a hard drive issue. Is it by chance a dell? Be careful trying your restore discs. They will probably wipe your hard drive and any saved data will be lost. Where you go from here depends on how valuable your data is to you. If not very, try the restore discs. If it is important then seeking away to recover it is your next step. What are your needs?

When at the screen that selects operating system just click next without selecting anything. You should come to a screen that says to install vista. On this screen you will also find a choice to repair your computer. Click on that and try the startup repair first. If that doesn't work try the system restore. If that doesn't work you're probably going to need a new hard drive.

i have a toshiba m305-s4819.

unfortunately i no longer get that system repair screen. it goes directly to the 'windows was shut down unexpectedly...' yada yada, then asks if i want to start it normally or in safe mode. is there a way to get back to the system repair screen from the boot menu or anything?

are any of the discs that came with the laptop a Windows Vista Disc? If any are then you can boot to the repair console from the there.

Yes, upon starting the computer you need to continuously press F12 to bring yourself to the boot menu. Insert your operating system recovery disk and choose to boot from CD. You will then get a black screen followed by a message that says, "press any key to boot from CD." Make sure you press any key or it will just go on its own.
