is there a way to get back to the system repair screen from the boot menu or anything?
Yes, upon starting the computer you need to continuously press F12 to bring yourself to the boot menu.  Insert your operating system recovery disk and choose to boot from CD.  You will then get a black screen followed by a message that says, "press any key to boot from CD."  Make sure you press any key or it will just go on its own.

will booting from cd erase the contents of my hard drive?

Only if you don't do a format or re-install, booting to the repair console should be safe.

Right, instaposted.

Not if you only run the repairs.  If you install the operating system again it will wipe everything clean.
May you prosper greatly!
