Post by: SirNobody on July 11, 2015, 12:33:13 PM
Hey,

For those of you have have not heard, on Tuesday July 7th Britta and I had our first child.  Lillian Rose weighed 9 lbs 11 oz and was 21 3/4 inches long. Britta and Lillian are both home from the hospital and doing well.

I'm not sure about Tim's side of the family, but big babies run on our side: I was 10 lbs 4 oz, and Justin was the smallest of the six of us, coming in at 8 lbs 13 oz. So our niece fits right in... ;)

The original due date was July 15th but was then changed to July 1st. Apparently she decided to split the difference...  :P

I quiver at the thought of what the Bible has to say about children born to an old guy...  :o

Congratulations!  I'll never cease being amazed at what I've learned about God's love for us, ever since I became a father and got to know first-hand a father's love for his children.

Congrats on the firstborn.  Question: Is the redness around the kids face normal?

Question: Is the redness around the kids face normal?

Most newborns will have that, yes.

We've obviously learned a lot about babies in the past two and a half weeks. One interesting fact is that newborns get acne almost as badly as teenagers because they have a lot of hormones that are trying to figure out what they're supposed to be doing. Although the redness you're seeing is mostly just leftover swelling/irritation from recently coming out through a very tight space!

Some tips you may already have heard:

1.) Crying is a baby's only form of communication. Some people get annoyed by crying babies, but I always marveled at the attempt to let me know what he/she wanted. Eventually the cry for food will be distinct from the cry for being uncomfortable, then you can calm the tears more quickly.  ;D
2.) Babies smile more often when they are pooping than when they are happy. Of course, they are happy to be pooping. ;)

Some of life's greatest moments:

1.) A baby holding your finger tightly.
2.) A baby recognizing you as mom/dad.
3.) A baby falling asleep in your arms.

I'm not so much frustrated by the crying as I am by the fact that I can't always figure out why she's crying.  :(
Also, the smiling while pooping doesn't surprise me. Tim informed me yesterday that apparently pooping causes the brain to release pleasure signals...and if it didn't, it would be almost impossible to potty train small children. Oh the fascinating facts of life, lol.

It will come with time, I promise.  ;D
