Billy Graham

So, we are doing a debate in my history class about the most influential figure of the 20th century, and I chose to research Billy Graham. I've always known who he is, but never really known many details, so what I found was very interesting. It was mostly all good stuff, such as the fact that he has reached more people for Christ than anyone else. However, one of my sources said that he was criticized by President Truman as being a "counterfeit" and that another evangelist said he "did more harm to the man of Jesus Christ than any one else," or something along those lines. Apparently some anti-Semitic comments between him and President Nixon, I think it was, were caught on tape in the seventies.

I am curious what you all know about the man and/or what you think of him. (In light of another thread, I'm not asking you to do my homework; I already did my write up of him. I just thought it would provoke a good discussion.) :)

Billy Graham was the only TV evangelist that kept his nose clean. All the others kept got in trouble. He always preached the gospel in it's simplest form and was a very humble man. I was at an Urbana Missions Convention in 1979 and he spoke on commitment. Their were 18,000 people in attendance and there wasn't a dry eye in the house. He gave a very moving talk.
He's probably sitting in heaven right next to Moses.

The Anti semitic comments were Nixon's..Billy Graham merely agreed with them while in the oval office.  He has since appologized for agreeing with them, whether he thoguht they were private comments or not.

And when he is dead, he will be still alive. And when you're dying, he'll be still alive. And when you're dead, he will be still alive....Still Alive....Still alive.

Graham is alright. Not a big fan of his theology, but I give him props for not succumbing to greed with his wild success.

Either way,him spreading the word of Christ is what I like him for.He would stand for what he believed in no matter what people thought, but some times got caught into their plots.

If what he stands for is wrong, it really doesn't matter.

But he doesn't really get that into theology. He's not a theologian, he's an evangelist, and he is the only televangelist who isn't scum.

Be careful here Alex.  This could be interpreted in the wrong way.  :)

Change that to will. After all, this is the internet.

Everyone is a theologian.

Sad... but true.

True, everyone is a theologian.  Most are bad theologians because they claim to believe one way and then live another.  Graham seemd to be consistent though in minimizing theological differences in favor of evangelism.  He wasnt as concerned with what you believed so much as that you lived a life of faith.

Are you saying there are people who believe Batman is God?
