I'm going to be buying parts to build my own PC soon, but I don't have any experience, and I'm pretty stupid in the area, so I'm looking for help. Anyone willing to help me build something to suit my needs and budget?

If you're going to be buying and assembling your own computer, I'd recommend Newegg (newegg.com). They have good prices, and frequent sales, as well as a very large selection including reviews for most every product.

You're going to want to talk to SomeKittens about that. He's definately a good source of knowledge

I'd say Schaef is the better one to talk to, but I'm also willing to help.  What's your needs/budget?

Basic gaming computer. I'd like something that will be able to run Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim when it comes out in a few months. 1 TB HDD (not a SSD) should cover my memory needs and then some. Beyond that, I'm not overly picky. I don't have any need to run Crysis on high settings for instance, but I want something that will allow me to play modern, high-end games on medium settings without any hiccups. I'd like to avoid going over $550 (not including software or peripherals), and definitely not more $650.

That shouldn't be too hard.  Do you already have a keyboard/mouse/case/etc?

Not a case, but beyond that, yeah. Basically, I just need the actual computer (including power supply). Everything else (mouse, keyboard, external monitor, etc.) I have taken care of.

Happy to help.  I have kept my own computer for the last 12 years, upgrading in pieces to keep it in reasonable shape: it can play Unreal Engine 3 and Source games with ease, and I don't worry about supporting the Crytek engine.

We just helped RR do a build and aside from botching the CPU install (both the easiest thing to get wrong and the most important thing to get right), his install went pretty smooth.  I'll dig up and post the notes I gave to him as a starting point for you.

I built my own before. But the new PSU I got was to powerful (old one was old) and burnt the connection to the motherboard. Opps!

Building a PC is fun, but for your own sake, make sure all the parts will fit together BEFORE you order them!

For example, pick a motherboard. Then find out which CPU will fit on the motherboard. Then find out what kind of CPU-Fan will fit. Then research the motherboard and see what kind of graphic cards will fit. Then see what kind of Hard Drive connections it has so you can order a hard drive.
