That is a good point. I'm actually not sure where to draw that line at this point. But there seems to be something different from an organized game thread (ie. 20 questions to figure out a Redemption card) and an unorganized spam-filled thread. I'm up for more discussion on this, but they do seem different to me.

The fourth thread is definately spam. It has like a million exclamation points. I'm also not inclined to lock an entire thread just because someone gets a bit exclamation point happy.

I am going to have to ask what rules? In this case, that people should avoid excessive spamming.

I don't really understand the difference between them. Transcribing that philosophy into real life tells me that if I kill one person a day for 100 days, you don't care, but if I kill 100 in one day, you do. I don't think spamming is as harmful as killing people, so the analogy breaks down. A better analogy would be drinking Mt. Dew. If you drink one Mt. Dew can a day for 100 days, it probably won't hurt you, and could actually be nice if you like the taste. But if you drink 100 Mt. Dews in one day, then that is going to be very bad for you.

This is an example of good spam. It is a single post in a thread that has relevant value to the forum, and it is funny. Of course if a whole bunch of people now add posts of nonsense typed with their nose, then it loses its funniness and transforms a useful thread into a spam-filled thread and would get it locked. Does that make sense?

But seriously, the Redemption forum is the strictest forum (out of many I have been active on) concerning spam. Now I understand there is a limit and eventually spam can get to be too much on any forum (especially in the case of board invasions we used to do back in the good ol' GameFAQs days before the IGN takeover. Good times, good times!). But it is very fun to post on threads such as Cheese and read others' posts and smile at their randomness and at how inconsequential they are. I don't think every thread should be that way but that we should let some of them fly. Just my

Although I agree that YMT is probably the front-runner for Forum Jester, I suppose in this case the "authority on funny" would be the mods. If a mod finds a post funny, they are probably less likely to view it as spam, and therefore less likely to take any action about it.

Prof U and I have been talking about spam and stuff via PM's, I think I can add some of that discussion to here, as its not a major personal matter.

A few points I made:

Sometimes, people will post joke threads for the amusement of others. I do not consider these spam by default. Countless numbers of people have posted threads with nothing but a funny youtube video. These almost never get locked.

In my opinion, If a thread has no real purpose except to be funny, then simply monitor it. It's all contained in a single thread. If it gets out of control, then lock it. However, if people start posting tons of threads about the same thing, THAT is absolutely spam. Also, if people completely derail a legitimate discussion with off topic posts, that should also be considered spam.

My main qualifier for spam is if it begins to annoy several people (or if it devolves into a flame war), or it derails legitimate conversations. Of course its still a matter of judgement, but those two situations are almost always going to be spam.

Drinking anything x100 in one day is bad. Does that mean rapidly expanding serious discussion threads are dangerous?

How did typing a post with my nose have any relevant value to the forum? What is good spam? That is such an oxymoron. If it's good, it's probably not a stupid, pointless, annoying message.

It won't..... As long as you eat an otherwise balanced diet one can of mountain dew a day isn't going to hurt you. The only possible problem one can could cause is if you drink it to late at night you might have trouble getting to sleep, but other then that there isn't anything in mountain dew that can hurt you with that small of an intake

Being honest I read Alex's first post and skipped the rest. I just wanted to address the original issue best as I could. Your point was valid, but not realistic. I know you personally Alex (meaning met in person not just through the board), so don't take this the wrong but you had 4 threads that were not shut down/deleted. I did not read the threads, there is more to it than that. Having 4 threads to "justify" your point about mods not being fair is, well, not fair to us mods. How many hundreds of hundreds of threads are there? Mods can not realistically, nor should they, be able to read every thread. I do appreciate you bringing these threads to our attention, and I am sure they are being watched, or have already been taken care of. But 4 threads out of all the good work mods have done to keep the board clean/correct seems a little nitpicky to me. Also the mods have to do their job based on their OPINION, not a set of guidelines per say. If the threads have not been looked at I will personally read over them and send them up to the moderator circle for review. If I see any posts that are offensive then I will PM that member. Let's try to keep the boards safe, clean, fun and a place to go to catch up and learn, not debate and stress. Thanks guys.

The way I see it, since every post has a button to notify moderators of posts against policy, if there is a thread that doesn't get caught in the monitoring process, it's something the mods missed, but it's also something the 1300+ forum members failed to bring to their attention. These boards are only going to be as good as the community wants to make them.

Or maybe we could tinker with the rules of the forum so that they are in harmony with the general attitude of the mods, rather than at odds with it.
