Also besides Redemption...

What other card games do you play? Myself, I have played just about every CCG there's been (I have *not* played Pokemon or Yugi-oh). But I actually have decks for and play Star Trek: Customizable Card Game and Legend of the Five Rings.

What about everyone else? I'm asking mainly because I'm looking to see if there are any other players who play these games, so maybe we can schedule a day to play. lol

I used to play Lord of the Rings CCG but ran out of people to play with. Still love the game though. Harry Potter CCG is a really fun and quick game...easy concepts easy to learn. Those are it though.

Yeah, exactly the reason I've stopped playing Star Trek: CCG and Legend of the Five Rings.

Myself, I have played just about every CCG there's been (I have *not* played Pokemon or Yugi-oh).

I find that unlikely. A quick search on BoardGameGeek shows hundreds. (Edit: removed malformed link)

Anyhow, the only other CCG I've played more than five games of besides Redemption is .hack//ENEMY, which my friends and I got after the game was discontinued and booster packs were dirt cheap. We each picked up some booster boxes for like $10 a piece and just played against each other (non-tournament-competitive, of course) and had a ton of fun. I still have a bunch of cards and decks that are doing little but taking up game shelf space.

Okay, you got me. lol That was a gross over-exaggeration. But I used that to indicate that I have actually played a lot of CCG's. I only had my own decks for a few of the games, but for the other games I used other peoples' decks and they would teach me how to play.

I've heard of .hack//ENEMY, but I have not, actually, played that one. That might be a fun way to go, too. Find a game that's been discontinued on-line somewhere and just play for fun.

I played BattleTech, myself. It was one of the games I played but didn't own my own deck. One reason I liked it so much was because of its unique condition for victory, to scrap your opponent's draw pile. While there are other games that you lose if you draw out of your draw pile, I don't know of any where you specifically attack your opponent's draw pile. lol

I have played MTG, Net Runner, and tried Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon...Redemption is the only CCG I have played since about its inception.

All these I have played at least once:

Redemption
Star Wars (Decipher)
Star Wars (WotC)
Magic
Zatch Bell
Pokemon
Digimon
Terminator
Warlord
Lord of the Rings
Middle Earth
Yu-Gi-Oh
Harry Potter
World of Warcraft
Pirates (CMG)
Mage Knight (CMG)

Redemption is quite excellent. It has a lot of strategy in terms of deck building and gameplay, but is somewhat clunky and can be convoluted.

Magic is up there as well, but it has serious problems in terms of "mana screw" and "mana flood," much worse than the "lost soul issues" found in Redemption.

World of Warcraft is actually quite good. It solves a lot of the problems of Magic and has a very interesting battle phase. The ability to do a "raid" where several players play against one other player's overpowered "uber-deck" is quite fun as well. A strong contender for the best CCG ever.

Harry Potter is really cheap and a favorite of mine as well. It is extremely easy ruleswise and many decks basically "play themselves." Most of the strategy really comes in the deckbuilding, but the amount of different decks that can be made is wonderful. There is a lot of room for creativity and the game is very cheap to get into.

I used to love Lord of the Rings and still play occasionally, but later sets seemed bent on adding more rules instead of more fun and also banning all cards after a year, meaning the money you poured into it became worthless. Fun casually, ridiculous in a competitive environment.

Can you tell me about the Zatch Bell game? I remember reading about it and thinking that the game system was actually kind of neat, despite the subject matter.

Zatch Bell had a really unique idea. Your "deck" was actually a little book that held 25 cards. (imagine 25 card sleeves all stapled together). Each card had a cost to play it, which you paid by turning the pages of the book. So to play a card on the first page that cost 3, you would have to turn three pages. Once a page is turned you cannot play the card on it. So "deckbuilding" becomes a matter of flexibilty. If you play one type of deck, play the card on the first page, knowing you will skip the next three. Against another type of deck, perhaps you first turn a page, and play the card on the second page, skipping over some other cards. If you turn the last page, you lose. As you can imagine, this makes for pretty short games. In fact, a lot of cards force the opponent to turn pages. It was an interesting concept, but the thematic material was a complete turnoff. I never saw the show, and anime can be a bit tough to relate to anyway, but this was ridiculous. The main character was a kid wearing a dress who's power is apparently to throw up purple vomit on his enemies. He is joined by his friend who is a baby with a duck's bill that apparently likes to eat candy bars. Just bizzare. I could not relate to it at all, but if the theme had been better I might have stuck with it a little longer.

Sounds like a really neat game! Sounds like a really bizarre theme!

While .hack//ENEMY was full of theme, the theme was just RPG-based, and so it was easy to get through - many of my friends who played were actually familiar with the .hack universe, but it didn't matter to me. Zatch Bell, from your description, just seems to take it way too far.

Megaman NT was another Decipher game, if I'm not mistaken. I'd always wanted to try it but never got around to it. How was it? I still may see if I can come across some cards and try to play.

My son loved the show, but he wasn't too interested in the game. I wish I could have found out about your interest sooner. I gave away a bunch of sealed booster and starter deck boxes when we first moved to Florida last year. We moved here with only what we could fit in our minivan, so the boxes had to stay behind. I did, however, find some stray boxes in a bin later. I have one sealed booster box from Grave and one from Grand Prix.

I've played city of heroes, LOTR ccg, and Pokemon when I was like 6. I really liked city of heroes, but no one to play with.  :'(

Is Legend of the Five Rings any good?  I've heard a few things about, but have never played it.

The only other CCG/TCG I've played seriously besides Redemption is the SW TCG (there are two different ones, and the one I played is the one often referred to around here as "the crappy one". :)).  It's ok, but not nearly as solid Redemption.

I played MTG for about 9 years before I started playing redemption.  I had a massive collection that I sold to some guy in france for about $500.  Then I started filling my card boxes with redemption.  ;)

Hmm...I didn't think it was as bad as others feel because I and those I played it with imposed some...rules of our own.  It was actually quite a different game. :)
