From what I understand, apple used this (http://www.noiseaddicts.com/2009/04/thinnest-speakers-in-the-world-flat-flexible/) for the speakers.  Since there is a layer under the metal backing, and since it goes around all edges, it really does provide for a deep, resonating sound
