"Wow. A lot of responses. Again, I would like to reiterate that I don't have the power to make any decision. I am not trying to discourage anyone from playing their games, and I don't expect it to be a problem for people to be playing games that may be "objectionable" in a closed off room/time (which, AFAIK, will be perfectly fine). I think it is perfectly reasonable to ask that you carefully and prayerfully consider what games you play in the main area during the tournament time. As far as I know, my church doesn't have an official banlist, but I know that there are people in my church who would probably object to certain games. It's not about offending people. Its more about accurately representing what Redemption is: a game devoted to fun, fellowship, and based on the Bible.

Again, feel free to bring any games that you believe doesn't have objectionable material and feel free to play them as you will. That is encouraged. However, if you've been around the boards/in the general Christian body long enough, you know that certain games are seen as objectionable by many Christians, and all I would ask is that if you want to play those games, let the host know. If the host team believes that it might be a big problem to play them at all, then we'll let you know, but I doubt that will happen. I really hope that's not too much to ask.

As for the general topic, I certainly don't feel that Christians should need to be watchdogs for other Christians for things that they cannot Biblically attest to being wrong. If you playing a certain game offends me, then I can walk away. However, my primary concern is that if a certain game offends me, and I want to leave my child in a place that might have those games going on, I want to make sure its done in a way where my child cannot walk up and start getting involved in a game that I don't believe they should be."

So, if you go to Nats, quietly find some additional players, and quietly go play somewhere private and don't raise any objections, then there won't be a problem.
The opportunity to do just that is all I've been looking for.

I don't think this will be a big issue. I just remember playing bang at Ohio Nationals and having a great time. The great hall and hang out room will be open till 12:00 midnight for gameplaying. Other space will be available for those needing to be a little more private. The hotel is always available for anybody to play what ever they want also. The option of having an all night prayer meeting and praise service is also available in the chaple. You also can sleep if you like so you have a chance at winning a catagory the next day.

I will be staying at the church all three nights. Just check with me, we will try to make this a non issue.

Some Christians believe that any consumption of alcohol is a sin.
This is a "belief" that does not deserve respect. Jesus' first miracle was turning water into wine, and Paul suggests it to Timothy. Believing that all alcohol consumption is sin directly contradicts the Bible, and is therefore heresy.
I do not believe the consumption of any alcohol is a sin.  But I also don't want my 9 year old son getting interested in the "beer" card so that he can "heal" his wounded cowboy?  Is that heretical of me to want to protect my child from this at this age?  If the game denoted alcohol having negative effects that would be one thing, but instead the game actually encourages the consumption of beer (for the cowboys that is).

By the way, it would be fine for me if someone plays Bang there (as I have been saying all along).  I'm just saying that parents may have good reasons to not want their children to participate.

If I bring, for instance, the Eragon books, will that be okay? What about Twilight (don't judge me)? Lord of the Rings?

Or what if you (or someone else) was watching a Harry Potter movie on your laptop with headphones on?  Would you be asked by someone to turn it off?

Forget Bang, I want to play that one game that Bryon invented! As well as Bang...and Dominion...and, well, another other games that I can. I am interested in trying all the ccgs, and that takes priority over playing normal games, so come find me when you're about to play.

Eragon, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, etc. are all acceptable. Twilight is strictly banned, and you will be removed from the premises if you are caught with it. Treat Twilight like an Orange brigade Redemption card (this is MN, after all).

On a serious note, you really can bring whatever games/books you want/feel is acceptable. No one will be punished/banned/arrested for anything they bring (except for illegal drugs, weapons, firearms, and alcohol--our church does have strict policies on those). However, we would ask that you be respectful of others and their views. That doesn't mean if an angry parent comes up to you and demands that you repent of playing Bang! that you must oblige. However, it would be beneficial to all parties involved if you are asked to not participate in something at certain times or in certain areas, that you would be respectful of the host team, other people, and church policy, and restrict yourself to participation during appropriate times. Several members of the host team met last night, and decided, for instance, that general participation video games will not be allowed during tournament play, because it gets very difficult to get everyone to the playing area if they have those kind of distractions (as we have seen from countless tournaments amongst our playgroup). Video games are welcomed in the off hours. If you are not playing in the tournament and you are playing a game on your laptop in the corner, that's just fine. However, whatever games you play, please be aware of who else you allow to observe those games, and try to be mindful of that.

Again, if you have any questions about specific games/books/movies that you plan to bring, just let Bill know. He's a really reasonable guy, and is by no means anti-fun. But we do have a responsibility to our church and the Redemption community to maintain some amount of control on the activities that go on, so the more we know, the better it is for everyone.

We're possibly going to go to a Legend of the Five Rings game night on Thursday and you're welcome to come.

That sounds really fun. Can people without cards still join in on the games?

We have two starters at the moment and the game store we're going to has a bunch of decks for sale.

When will you be there Wednesday? I'd like to try the game before I buy a starter.

FWIW, the copy of Bang! typically played at National events - the Hakes' - has the "Beer" cards defaced with the additional prefix "Root", thus making the drinks fit for those under 21.

A&W is amazing.  Even better on tap at one of their restaurants.

Oh! Also! Somebody please, please, please bring Ticket to Ride. I will love you forever!

I can bring that. Out of curiosity, which one do you like, the Original, Europe, or the dice expansion (for either)?

I'm bringing my fresh and new copy of Bang! so if anyone wants to help me "censor" the "questionable" cards (like the Beer) I'll be bringing sharpies, too. ;)
