Post by: Gabe on November 02, 2016, 10:43:09 AM
We're getting to the final steps of completing our player created cards! The scripture reference votes are in. Now it's time to pick the card art. The art choices can be found below under the spoiler tags. We have a number of really nice suggestions to choose from! Voting will run for 6 days and end on Tuesday at the time of this posting.
Next week we will vote on the stats.
Option #1 - by Rembrandt
Option #2 - by Nikolai Bodarevsky
Option #3 - The Conversion of St. Paul, 1767 by Nicolas-Bernard Lepicie
Option #4 - The Apostle St. Paul by Antonio del Castillo

#3 is amazing! So far #4 is winning but I'm confused about the sword - Paul was a Pharisee and then an apostle so I don't know that he ever used a sword...he wouldn't be warrior class because he isn't mentioned in the Bible as having ever fought in a battle, so far as I know...maybe the sword is symbolic of the Word, as in Ephesians 6:17 and Hebrews 4:12. He was certainly in that sense a spirtual warrior! I hope #3 wins though as I think it's awesome!!

I think option 2 best represents Paul and his scripture reference: he is preaching the gospel of Christ in chains and doing so despite the danger of losing his life preaching to Roman royalty.

If Gabe Isbell's card is ever updated we can use the art from option 5! :D

I agree that the sword imagery seems a little odd, though it's worth noting that it shows up in 1 and 5 as well as 4. I almost feel like 3 would be better saved for an enhancement (or maybe even a dominant.... worth a thought) based on Paul's conversion, though I could see it used for Paul himself if no such card is ever made. That said, I voted 2 for the same reason as Watchman did.

Regarding the sword Paul is holding, each Apostle had items they held to help distinguish them in iconography. Meaning, if you wanted to display 12 apostles in stained glass windows, all you would end up with are twelve men that all look alike. So each Apostle holds something, usually the item of their martyrdom. Paul was beheaded with a sword. In iconography, Paul is almost always old, bald, and holding a sword. Thus, the sword tells us that is Paul in the image. However, it will most likely be confusing for many who don't understand it!

Thank you for explaining that! That's really interesting and I think I'll look into this more.

I am reminded with the imagery of a sword in many of these that God's Word is a sword as well. I like images that create conversation. I can see a question being raised about the sword in the art leading to some great discussions. My vote is for #4.
