is the story, Joab has always done what he wanted, when he wanted, and many a time David has been blamed for it...

Correct. I was very happy to see a card to make Joab evil considering all he did.

Joab killed Abner out of VENGENCE not because of being an assasin. Asahel was Joab's brother.
-
quote) 22 Again Abner warned Asahel, "Stop chasing me! Why should I strike you down? How could I look your brother Joab in the face?"
23 But Asahel refused to give up the pursuit; so Abner thrust the butt of his spear into Asahel's stomach, and the spear came out through his back. He fell there and died on the spot. And every man stopped when he came to the place where Asahel had fallen and died.
32 They took Asahel and buried him in his father's tomb at Bethlehem. Then Joab and his men marched all night and arrived at Hebron by daybreak. (end quote)
Absolutely everything. David did not command Joab to call out to Abner to talk to him outside the city, he did so of his own will. He was not an assasin (to my knowledge). Commander? yes but he was ALOT of peoples commanders.

Not only that...read the next chapter...

It was out of vengeance, Joab was a very jealous man. Anytime someone could potentially take his spot as David's top commander, he was murdered, so for Joab, killing Abner was a two for the price of one. My best understanding of what happened was they were warring, yes. David probably did send Joab to meet with Abner and to handle things. Joab and Abner chose 12 men each to fight and Asahel went for their commander, which was not in the original plan. Thus when Asahel dies from Abner's self-defense, Joab and his brother think that the rules were broken and seek revenge. But make no mistake...Joab was a very dangerous man, that always looked for what was best for him...what a way to be recorded in the Scriptures...just a thought

his brother is did joab tell his brother to kill abner? no he did not he did it by him self joab had no part of this.
Exactly, No one, not asahel, Not David, Not abishai, not ANYONE told Joab to kill Abner. He did so of his OWN will. If you tripped and hit my bro in the face does that give me any right to beat you to a bloody pulp because of it?
+1 Techno.

Musician, put it into perspective. In that day and age, women were treated as property, and the more kids you had, the wealthier you were, so having three wives was not necessarily evil, we just think it is in today's society, along with certain interpretation of scripture. Now, did David do evil things, well, we fell for some guy's wife and had that guy put to death because he was too noble to go home and be with his wife while his comrades were in battle, but Scripture also shows he paid a hefty price and repented of his sin. Did Joab ever once confess to David what he did to maintain his status? If so, why would David call all of the sons of Zeruiah, which Joab was one of, evil?

Yes its wikipedia, but it is also pretty much accurate, Joab was an evil man, end of story. Abishai, I don't know about, and the rest of David's men are remembered for their mighty deeds...just something more to think about

no thats not my point my point is that joab most likly did not know his brother killed a man you know what im saying cause joab is not in the scripture at all
thanks for reading
Austin =o)+<
Do you ever read what I say? or just skim it? Asahel was KILLED, he did not KILL Abner. JOAB did. It was within the law of back then, but if you apply your same nowadays logic. He said 'We need to get a truce' then killed him. Any way you slice it Joab was NOT a good guy.
Also, Joab is in the scripture alot.

Austin,
To clarify, you might want to say that the particular passage you were reading did not mention Joab. Because he is mentioned quite often along with his acts in 2 Samuel and 1 chronicles, rather than just saying the scripture. "The scripture" is very vague because your audience does not know what you are referring to.
Just some thoughts

ok i see what your saying...but joab is not in the scripture at all i read it like two three times and anly saw his name in ther once or twice and if i did he wase taking orders from david or telling david he is sorry.
Ausitn =o)
In the small ammount of bible you read there he is barely there BUT if you look at other scripture you will see what we mean. Thats like saying Saul was the worst person ever and would never change because you read he held the coats of those who stonned steven.
His brother didn't kill Abner. He did. Asahel (His bro) died TO Abner by running into the hilt of his spear (Which tells you how FAST he ran).

I guess that answers that.
