Title: Javelin
Post by: Bobbert on July 08, 2013, 12:10:20 PM
Figured that Spearman could use some more spears, and toss hadn't been fully exploited yet...

Spoiler (hover to show)

I think I may change it to discard instead of underdeck, to keep the power down a bit. It's essentially the same as "prevent the next enhancement", except it works against CB and gives you better initiative.

This ability actually wouldn't really work because a tossed enhancement must come from hand. That's what it says in the redemption wikia at least.

*checks* So it does. May I be one to say that that should not be the case? I realize that it allows weapons on FS to activate, but that makes any toss weapon (and I can't have been the only one with the idea, seeing as tossing is what javelins and, to a lesser extent, spears were used for in real life) impossible.

I would have to agree. Or make it a unless specified on card thing. then spears and such could be.

I don't know what the Wikia says exactly, but Tossed cards do not have to come from hand, that is only the default condition. Weapons override the default on toss, just like they override the default on how enhancements are played. Thus, if a weapon is on Foreign Spearman, it is in fact tossed when he enters battle (assuming his ability is active).

I was actually going to ask that question of how weapons would work on him. So they just dont work? He says played in battle. I thought that didnt include weapons?

They do work, they just get tossed right away (so their SAs don't activate, but the decrease from the toss does happen).

Weapons are played in battle just like all other enhancements.

I thought cards that specified could trump game rules?

Yeah. Thats what it says in the 10th anniversary rulebook.

Some card special abilities trump some game rules.  This is unfortunately one of those really complicated things that has never really been transitioned from unwritten rules to written rules.

For instance, capturing a character causes them to be treated as a LS, and put in the Land of Bondage (even though game rules wouldn't normally put characters in the LoB).  But when Gomer is converted she still can't band to an evil character (because the game rule about good characters not banding to evil characters trumps her SA).  We all kind of intuitively know which game rules can be broken, and which ones can't.  But that's never fully been written down anywhere.

I would welcome someone to actually try to write up something that spelled these out for people, but it is a daunting task, and I won't be surprised if no one takes me up on the challenge :)

One of the things I really want to see what people think about is the second part of the ability. I personally like the idea of tossing an opponent's next enhancement (obviously, I made the card). It's effectively a negate that also gives you better initiative.

It's really too bad they already made Defenestrated!, as they would have made a great toss card.

If Gabriel is any evidence, it's never too early to reprint cards.  ;)
