I can't help but think that CoL is thematically unfulfilled.  Going by the reference, it's essentially a representation of "the next generation following in the church's footsteps."  In other words, it could be made into a contact point for players to identify more closely with the game.

I'd like to think it's not too unrealistic to imagine personalized copies of the card with a player's own picture instead of the regular card art.  Print all of them with the same numbers, ability, etc, rule that it's always the same card regardless of the picture, and bingo - you have a personalized, non-game-breaking novelty that can be tournament legal without adding the headache of an entire new card entry for everyone who gets one printed.

EDIT: One change would be needed; it would need to go from "Female" to "Same gender as owner".

Thoughts?

Anyone remember years and years ago when Cactus printed custom Hero cards for the players? Just reminded me of that.

Yep.  I heard about it, but missed that year.  IIRC they were only guaranteed tournament-legal for one year, and ultimately they were allowed to expire.  Something about not wanting to keep that many irregular cards in the rotation.

Somebody literally just brought up the custom cards the other day on the discord. I think this idea is super cool. Tons of logistical issues to deal with though.

I imagine one of those issues would be the cost of printing one-off cards?

Cost is definitely a factor, but people were paying $20 (I think) back in 2010 for their personalized cards so I don't think the cost is going to be the most prohibitive thing.

I can see the graphic work being a hassle. People will have to submit their pics but that means they will come in all different formats, quality and sizes. I do most of the graphic work for Redemption these days and I'm willing to give it a try. I think we could even offer a selection of alternate borders that players could choose from!

Once the card graphics are put together the individual cards are printed on 18 card sheets, which means orders probably need to be submitted 18 cards at a time. It could take a while to get them done, especially if you're one of the first submissions in a batch of 18 and have to wait for the rest to fill in.

Those are the obstacles that I can foresee. But I think this is a really cool idea and could be fun to try!

The custom cards were before my time - how do they work exactly? Does it have to be a picture of yourself, or could it be anything (like Superman or Link from The Legend of Zelda, for example)?

It was a picture of yourself.

IIRC it was done at Nationals that year.  They had a camera on-site, would take a picture of you and build a Hero of yourself from a range of approved stats and SA's.  Then they'd print it out and glue it to whatever card.  They were guaranteed tournament-legal for one year, but when the time came to renew them those in charge decided not to.

I think some of us send in pictures before nationals to use on the card. My art interesting enough is me in Jersusalem , at the dome of the Rock. Perhaps the only mosque 🕌 on a Redemption card. My wife’s card got to have a neat identifier with “Mother of Naomi.” It’s was cool to run in our decks that following year.

Gotcha. Sorry, I was thinking of the unofficial fan cards that were also made many years ago.  I didn't read this thread carefully enough. Thanks for explaining!

So, what would it take to get the ball rolling on this?

You'd need to present the idea to Mr. Rob Anderson. I recommend sending him an email with a brief description of the idea and a link to this thread (which he might have already read). If it's something he wants to pursue further he'll probably talk it through with his leadership team. He'll see that a couple of us already at least like the idea and that I'm willing to help with the graphic portion.
