Faith Unbowed / Elohim 2019 Sealed Winner Card

From The Rainbow to a Faith Unbowed..

CARD NAME: Faith Unbowed / Elohim [Sealed 2019 Card Creation Winner]
CARD TYPE: Good Enhancement / Hero
CLASS: Territory Enhancement
IDENTIFIERS: Unity Daniel Heroes Begins as an Enhancement
STATS: 4/1 / 12/12
BRIGADE COLOR: White / White
SPECIAL ABILITY: Negate and/or discard an evil card. Place in territory: You may convert this card to Elohim to add Elohim to battle. / Restrict opponents to playing evil cards in play. Limit once.
SCRIPTURE: Daniel 3:18
FREQUENCY:
ARTIST: Artist Unknown

EXPLANATION: This card is a reprint of Unbowed and represents the Faith Unbowed of the Daniel heroes being seized by Babylon and maintaining their faith throughout this time all the way to being thrown into the fiery furnace (4/1 for the four heroes in the fire and the 1 great image- via Nebuchadnezzar, being out shined) where the one true Elohim arrives. It begins as a good enhancement to give the Daniel theme a negate and discard an evil card which then becomes a placed enhancement to give the Daniel theme an add to battle option. When converted, Elohim becomes a 12/12 hero representing governance over Babylon of the one true living God with a restrict ability representing the light outshining the fire of the furnace itself. Elohim can mean god in many contexts so this card being called Elohim is important as it collapses all of the idols to nature of The Lord, which Nebuchadnezzar recognized. It had cannot be negated as their Faith was Unbowed to facing death, and as God’s light outshines all. The entire card has Unity Daniel Heroes so it will only work with a Daniel offense, and Elohim’s restrict ability has Limit Once per Game for a clutch rescue.

Would love to hear your thoughts, any help finding epic artwork, and if you feel like this helps round out the Daniel theme. Love the idea of the Daniel deck but still find it to be somewhat lower level in terms of competitiveness unless other things are splashed in. Comparatively throne and flood survivors are very well rounded and setup quick at the moment.

A Daniel deck did win type a this year!

Would love to see your Daniel decks you could see this go in, or if you think there is a completely different ability that would better serve it, please post!

I would definitely run these if they just said, "Negate and discard an evil card." I'd even run them if they just said, "Discard an evil card." These are definitely interesting abilities, but they look a bit too strong as mono white cards, because being able to run four of these might be a little too much in T2... but I'm not sure. It would sure make playing my Daniel deck a lot easier if I had a battle winner this versatile while being recurable by Cloud Daniel (not that I'd be the one complaining mind you).

Do you feel like it’s comparable to edict minus cbn and with limit once on the hero side? Edict has long ruled t2 it seems along with auto Gideon

Thanks for mentioning cloud Daniel! I always play and think of the promo

Daniel cards are my current favorite so I approve adding more of them.  I am wondering where Elohim really fits as a Hero.  Seems like an opportunity for a Dominant to me.  Maybe you want to consider the 4th "man" within the furnace for the Hero side of this?
May you prosper greatly!

Yes will add the explanation for the card as a whole to the original post 😇

I see your thought process.  Looking forward to the final result once you're done working with the play testing team!

p.s. I am currently putting together a list of card ideas from the whole book of Daniel.  Will post them soon.
May you prosper greatly!

As a quick note--it has long been a policy of the design team (even prior to me being a part of it) that we will not be making a Hero card to signify God or Jesus (which would include other names of God like Elohim). There are several reasons for this, but one in particular is that Heroes are vulnerable to the effects of evil cards, which theologically speaking is not how we should represent God.

That being said, we will be working with JD to make his player created card as close to the concepts he has laid out here as we can.  8)

Cool idea! Two things though; you may want to think about adding a “limit one per deck” identifier. Second thing: before “you may convert...” part, you should add in, “at any time” as is, it'd only activate right when you put in territory, I think. Probably not what you were going for.  ;)

Maybe it could be a symbolic hero too?

my two cents for the ability: thematically and practically, the restrict should be for all players.

I don't know if it is too strong, but it will will be a huge boost for a Daniel deck. As it's a negate and discard. Combined with easy draw and recursion (if your using Cloud Daniel... and I do, while I'm not sure he's obviously better than the Promo one, he makes my deck capable of eventually getting through almost any defense) and a fair amount of protection (and if you're clever using a converted Nebby with his toss) I know it will be strong.

Also you might want to make it "Limit Once per Game" because otherwise people like me might think to just keep resetting the card to get around the one time use of his ability.

Here's an idea.

Would it be possible to make this a dual reference cloud enhancement with Hebrews 11:34 as the other verse since Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were reprinted as cloud heroes?

Hebrews 11:34, NIV: "quenched the fury of the flames, and escaped the edge of the sword; whose weakness was turned to strength; and who became powerful in battle and routed foreign armies."

This may not fit the precedent for dual testament cards, but I thought this would add another interesting dynamic.

I like how this card aims to be versatile and fill in for what the Daniel theme is currently lacking.

One question is The hero a person or is he symbolic?

As mentioned above, we will not be making an "Elohim" Hero. We have been working with JD to come up with an alternative option to represent the second part of his card idea. There is an idea on the table that everyone seems to like, but I will leave it up to JD if he wants to share that.  8)

I went back and re-read the text from Daniel 3:25 (NIV) "25. He said, "Look, I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods." Leaving a little wiggle room for interpretation as a protecting Angel. Hence my suggestion for Silver/White Symbolic Hero. Maybe Symbolic wouldn't have been needed in this case, using the NIV.

Dug a little further into Daniel 2:25 (KJV) "25. He answered and said, Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God." This shuts down the interpretation and argument for it to be a Symbolic Hero.

Thanks for making me dig deeper.

Godspeed,
Mike

No worries--I actually did the same thing and read a few commentaries as well. There is indeed different interpretations about whether the "4th man" was an angel ("son of the gods") or Jesus ("the Son of God"). The word that is used can mean "gods" plural or "God" singular based on the usage, but we don't have enough context to know for certain either way.

I think TC on a ‘negate and discard an evil card’ is too strong.  I do like the idea of a battle winner that turns into a battle extender though!
