Demas (reprint)

I was organizing some of my older cards and came across Demas who hadn't gotten a reprint yet and I immediately had the general idea of making a "betrayal" sort of effect since Demas deserts Paul.

I don't know for sure if he counts as a heretic, so if not just ignore that portion of his identifier line (he still seems like someone that would fit with the Heretics working against the early church in crimson even if he's not one himself).

Sorry for the grainy art, I couldn't find the original so I had to just scale up the pic of the old card from the wiki.

He has CBN because I want the convert ability to always happen since he really should be an EC and not a Hero, but I'm afraid that makes the soul protection OP (especially in T2).

If you have targeted removal then sure, it can be used as a choose the rescuer. However you can only do that once per T1 game or twice per T2 game (I believe) without healing.

without healing.

Peter would make healing him be pretty easy. I do like the concept, but I think that it would have to be limited to once per game in order to not be abusive.

The other solution would be to make the conversion dependent on a failed rescue. In most cases when people leave missions work, as Demas did, it is because times got tough or results were not as expected. So it would be: Once per game, you may add this Hero to your opponent's rescue attempt. If that rescue attempt fails, convert this Hero to an Evil Character. When blocking, protect up to 2 N.T. Lost Souls from rescue. Cannot be negated.

Is that a bad thing? It would take a lot of specific setup, plus the ability to remove only their Hero(es) every battle,

without healing.

I suppose I could add that, however we'll have to imagine it since the current card maker doesn't have the new widths of cards (or the ability to shrink special ability text) so I can't add anything else without having the s/a go into the verse (I already had to shorten the verse, haha).

I don't even think that this Demas would work...there is no time when "the rescue attempt would succeed" that he could actually trigger (since nothing can happen during Battle Resolution, and by the time you determine whether a soul would be rescued the battle is over and technically the combatants have already dispersed).  Even trying to work it so it worked how you intended wouldn't be a good card for the game, IMO, due to some of the combo concerns mentioned above.

I guess I don't see the problem with there being combos with it. It's not an easy setup (for the end the battle combo you'd have to have end the battle cards, a character that gets initiative against Demas but can still survive with the etb card, ways to remove all the heroes in battle except Demas, as well as the ability to heal him) so if people want to try to make a combo deck dedicated to him why is that a bad thing? Unless I'm missing something (aside from Peter) that makes the combo easy to use/reuse.

I will admit I wasn't sure if the "would succeed...instead" wording would actually work. So, sad but not surprised that it doesn't.
