hell being seperation from God is another common misconception. I wonder who started all of these?

Hell is separation from the LORD. Jesus is the way to get back to God. When man fell at the garden of Eden we were separted from God. Adam and Eve walked with God so before the Fall, man was with God in the cool of the evening. So yes Hell is separation from God.
