2021 T2-2P 1st Place -- PostEs/Nebby's Pride

In T2-2P, it was fairly well established that nobody was going to run LaFS until the night before when RDT, knowing that Tyler and I both weren't running it, almost got the cards to build it and play it in Type 2. I was fully prepared to put together a counter-deck that night to check in alongside my regular deck, but John opted not to do it. So the one deck I checked was, of course, the deck I had been looking forward to playing at Nationals since only a couple months after Nats 2020: Postexilic. As many of you know, Postexilic has been my favorite offense throughout the last year and I really wish I had stumbled across it sooner after LoC came out. I think it's very strong and would have liked to play it in Type 1 as well, but the Type 2 version is quite good (even moreso than I realized going into Nats) and so I had to go for my long-awaited T2-2P title. Shout out to TXJonathan for representing PostEs in Type 1 though! He made some great additions to the deck I posted and went 3-1 against non-LaFS decks which is pretty sweet.

I was a little undecided on the defense. The Greek defense in the version I featured on my channel was decent, but nothing too special in my opinion. I had used it mostly for the sake of trying out Greeks in Type 2 with Alexander the Great. Even though I hadn't tested it out yet, I knew the Nebby's Pride defense I mentioned in one of my videos looked really good on paper,
so I decided to give it a shot. And no, Nebuchadnezzar's Pride did not make the list, but that's the name I decided to give it as the main goal is to block with Nebby as early as possible, search for Pride of Lions and play it to pull out three Negev Lions and band them into battle. This means that your opponent has to discard three good cards from hand and you get to draw nine, which is a huge swing when it happens as early as turn one. So I built that into a lion-heavy animal shell and it was crazy good. I gave up four non-Dominant rescues the whole tournament and two of them were the first two turns of the game when I hadn't drawn any ECs against Tyler.

You’ll notice that the deck is at 101 and the idea was that in the one game I played against Justin before Nats I could decide between Golden Calf and Urim and Thummim, but the deck ended up being so fast anyway that I think both of those are worth the 101st slot. Those were the only negotiable Neutral slots in my opinion.

Round 1 vs Emmanuel Echavarria:

Emmanuel opened strong with 3 meek Daniel LSs, a star ability on Jehoiakim, Puppet King to underdeck one of them, Foreign Exile to grab evil Gates of Jerusalem, and Solomon's Oppression to grab Sheol. Fortunately I had drawn a Darkness to go get my Deceiver, leaving Emmanuel with no good attacks with only Daniel's Guardian and Daniel on offense, but I was certainly worried about how this game would go since Daniel is Nebby's kryptonite. My draw was also a bit worrisome since, even though I had some good acceleration, Haggai was initially my only Hero, so going second actually helped me significantly in this game (yay Type 2). I drew into Eliud and Remnant and had to make the decision of whether or not to search through Sheol, but ultimately I thought it would be worth it to get Jeshua to go with the Triumphal Entry and Plumb Line in my hand so I could get set up first and worry about Souls later. He underdecked one of them so I figured I should attack before using my other searches. I saw that Eman had Led Astray and Jehoiachin, the Conquered in his hand and I had Feast of Booths in hand as well so I decided to go in with meek Eliud to at least play around Led Astray and maybe make use of Feast of Booths early. Emmanuel made a slight misplay here blocking and banding, putting both his ECs into battle. He did protect LSs with the one he blocked with from hand (which he didn't realize wouldn't be CBN by Gates) and didn't protect with the other. I couldn't negate him AND play around Sheol so I went for the value play by playing Feast of Booths, banishing the Solomon's Oppression and Foreign Exiles from his discard pile, playing
Acts of Solomon from Reserve, which exchanged for Plumb Line to search for something that I would draw with Jeshua, and then banish both ECs in battle (which might be the first time I've ever actually used the banish ability on that card...). This actually worked out to play around Sheol because he didn't have Unity by the time the triggers resolved, but the LSs were still protected so it was about as successful of an unsuccessful rescue I could get.

This cleared the way for me to search to my heart's desire and after that I was off to the races and got my counters set up. I did deactivate Golden Calf for a turn to get Book going before I got Temple out, and Emmanuel did happen to find a Daniel's Prayer to get Foretelling on the table, but without Jeshua and Eyes to See, he didn't find much to grab. He did manage a few solid blocks early on, but he was spending resources that he couldn’t replenish. Joshua took care of his Gates and Sheol, and then Eliud locked down his defense for most of the rest of the game. Eventually I snagged Foretelling with a Remnant and he wasn't able to recover much offense either. It took most of the time available, but I finally put together the pieces to get to 7.

Round 2 vs John Michalizsyn:

John started out with Distressed and I had no LSs, so once again I ended up going second and liked it because my hand was a little awkward. I only had AUtO and Achim to start, but since I assumed John would go first, I decided to use the star on Betrayal to topdeck my Cov w/ Philistia to start doing some drawing. John started off with some strong cards, putting down Throne, Isaiah, and King Tiglath, so I was worried things could get out of hand pretty quickly, but he didn't have a way to generate a LS or any value-generating battle challenge options, so he passed.

I draw into my CwP and also Remnant, which was fortunate because I realized I should also have used Achim's star to topdeck Jeshua with CwP. Since John had Distressed, I thought about getting Eleazar so I would have a meek Hero for Achim and/or a Hero that Joshua could swap to after using AUtO, but I also had Delivered and The First Sacrifice and needed someone to play them on, so I went with Jeshua. He's also like the best Hero, so duh. Delivered got me to Book which I activated in Temple and grabbed Oath of Purity. I used Oath to bounce Tiglath, CwP to get Beasts and d2, and then First Sacrifice, hoping that Tiglath might have been his only EC. I was glad at first, seeing that his only other evil cards were Gomer, Women as Snares, and oh, Rubble and Dust... So I had to take out the R&D, grateful that I had gotten to it before he decided to play it on Temple, but I didn't have the resources in hand to even beat Tiglath by the numbers. I still rescued with AUtO to Josh, thinking maybe I would draw into something or maybe he wouldn't risk his ECs without backup, but he still blocked with Tigger and I opted to capture my Josh, in part to tempt him to attack into my hand full of defense.

Unfortunately for John, he didn't find many Heroes other than Isaiah and he did find plenty of non-green GEs, so he passed again. I find Zerubbabel on my turn to help me set up and come in with Ezra, Jeshua, Zerubbabel, and then the Malachi I drew into off Zerubbabel to get back the Solomon's Dream I had used, all the while knowing that John still has no EEs and I can beat him by the numbers at this point. He blocks with Women as Snares to capture my Behemoth, hoping he can somewhat clear the way for the offense he hoped to draw, but once I rescued Distressed and Jeshua and Achim were turned on, I got some of my acceleration going and replaced my defense with a variety of mostly genderless animals in case another Women as Snares popped up.

From that point, John drew into a little more defense and an Oath of Purity followed up by an Impartial Judgment attack cleaned up what was left. He drew his defense mostly one card at a time after that point so Eliud was able to pick off the remnants and get me to 7. All the while, John's holding AoC(P) in his hand (which I knew he had since the beginning), just waiting to draw into an ET or really just any purple Hero that might get initiative. He couldn't really justify attacking into my big defense most of the game. He did find Josh, the Conqueror eventually to at least underdeck my Confusion of Mind so that ET would work when he got to it, but it was too little too late as I was able to find SoG/TSC and get to 7 on the next turn.

Definitely a game that could have looked different if John had drawn the right Heroes to widdle through my defense and draw a bit from Throne, but I slowed him down enough that he never got there and I ended up with another big win.

Round 3 vs Joseph Roberts:

I had heard that Joseph had developed a reputation as a Red Warriors player and he gave Tyler a pretty tough match in Round 1, so I knew I shouldn't be overconfident even after my two strong showings in the first games. I opened with a Remnant and Covet to Joseph's zero LSs and neither of us activated any Stars. I got Jeshua from Reserve and Distressed from Joseph's deck with my LSs. I got to go first with AotL and Reverence and Awe in hand, so I got out Z Temple and thought all that might be enough with Jeshua and getting The Acts of Solomon from Reserve with Temple+Jeshua. Turns out it was but may not have been if Joseph had an EC to block with because he was playing Philistines with all the "equip a weapon" shenanigans. I got that one for free and then on his turn Joseph drew a Remnant and pulled a Benaiah from Reserve, which made me very concerned for my animal defense... He opted to attack with Caleb, equipping Sling Stones from Reserve instead of banding this turn. I finally was able to pull off a first turn Pride of Lions (even though it wouldn't stick due to Sling Stones) by using The Amalekites' Slave to grab Nebby and play it. I opted for two Negevs and one Lions, hoping that he wouldn't have enough fuel to discard and then negate or instead Lions and Pride would stick, but after discarding Chronicles of the Kings and Bravery of David, he showed me the AotL in his hand (making me regret not using the third Negev since I think he put Benaiah down IIRC), used Sling Stones to negate Pride, and then Angel'd the Nebby. He also had played a Damascus fortress so I fortunately drew into Shipwreck to negate his d3. He picked up that Soul, but the relative +8 cards definitely made it well worth my trouble as I
got cooking pretty quickly after that.

The next turn I didn't have any particularly strong attacks but I knew his only evil cards were a Commander Phicol that he put down for Ashkelon and the Paying Taxes in his hand. I played a pre-battle AotL to take out Commander and got another freebie. After that, my defense was set up pretty well, Confusion of Mind held off Benaiah, and an Impartial Judgment cleaned things up nicely once I got enough Heroes out. I was able to answer the defense he drew and locked down the game from there. I nearly decked out in most of my games, so it wasn't surprising that I was able to get to my Falling Away before Joseph found Guardian and I ended up with another 7-0 win.

Round 4 vs Tyler Stevens:

I had no idea what to expect from Tyler this year other than possibly some other variation of Throne or maybe a Postexilic build of his own. All I knew is that he thought his build was pretty good, so I was excited but also a bit nervous to see what he had cooked up. We had both been at the same table for every round so far, so we tried our best to avoid spoiling our surprises for each other, but I did catch on a little bit that he was probably running Priests. Of course there's only one way to run Priests in Type 2, but little did I know that Tyler found a neat little trick that I had missed in Lightning Priest that made it much more consistent and maintained attacking power throughout the game. If you’re unfamiliar with Lightning Priest, check out my version from last year here.

Tyler opened with Awake and both of his Crowds LS, I had Humble, and Tyler used the star on Scattered Sheep to reveal both hands and underdeck my Zechariah, leaving Ezra, and showing me no Heroes in his hand. Since I had already seen his hand, I used my Solomon's Dream star to look at his Reserve and figure out what we were dealing with here. One card I was not expecting to see in this tournament but makes a ridiculous amount of sense in the deck, is The Liberating Angel, which Tyler ran two of in Reserve. He used Awake to grab his own Exiles and then grabbed Cov with Abraham from Reserve. He went first, going for Captive Priest with Cov w/ Abe and then chaining it into the three others, Ezra, and Priests of Christ as one does with that deck. I would have loved so much to have a way to Nebby on this turn since I believe the only three good cards in his hand at that point where Son of God, TSC, and Chronicles, so triple Negev could have just about ended the game right there despite giving him a PoC trigger. Unfortunately though I opened with no ECs and had to give one up, posing that maybe I had one but didn't want to give the PoC trigger.

I don't remember exactly what offense I started out with, but I didn't find an Evil Character on this turn either. It was pretty fortunate for me to be able to see Tyler's hand before attacking because I think if I had attacked on this turn then Tyler would have gotten too much card advantage from a Rezin+Chariots block since I saw that his hand had Rezin and a few defensive battlewinners. Instead I think I just set a few things up and passed. On Tyler's second turn, he was able to use Cov with Abraham to get a Liberating, attacks, and uses a pretty sweet set of Priests to get the offense rolling. I'm sure he'll do a write-up as well if he hasn't already that will describe his starting set, but with still no ECs I had to give up my Humble again after playing Falling Away on it during my turn. In hindsight I should have waited so that'd he'd have to rescue a Captive Priest or just battle challenge if he released them. But anyway, he attacks and uses Aaron's Staff to find Destruction, Hungry Lion, and Esau on top of my deck which I wasn't thrilled about since the characters were a turn late. He discards DoN and gets back to one. My next turn I drew into the ECs and at least got to use Treasures of War on Cov w/ Abraham to slow down his offense. It may have been on the last turn, but I think it was this one that I was able to use two searches to get to Achim the Compiler to negate Tyler's Crowds LSs and then The First Sacrifice to underdeck King Rezin from his hand. I also had Coliseum to shut down the Scattered Sheep and Balaam's Disobedience he was holding so that Ezra banded to Tyler's Joshua the High Priest was enough for a rescue. Tyler was able to get rid of my Esau on his turn (I believe with The First Sacrifice) and Hungry Lion is a pretty bad block against Dutiful Priest with Aaron's Staff active, so my characters didn't do me any good on the next turn and Tyler got to 2.

This next turn is where the game began to turn around for me. If I remember correctly, this turn I attacked with Joshua to underdeck Aaron's Staff, exchanged to Jehoshaphat in my hand, and then banded to Ezra and Tyler's Josh. He had one EE that wouldn't be tossed by Scattered so he blocked with Hazael to discard Coliseum, but I discarded Joshua instead and then had Woes or Chronicles (I think) to negate his EE. Even though I didn't feel like I was keeping up on the card advantage initially, knowing what defense Tyler had available allowed me to pick up a couple surgical rescues through searching for answers and of course a few key draws like
Coliseum and Falling Away. The most key draw of the game though was on this turn when I drew Mayhem. I'm pretty sure I played it in my discard phase since I didn't want to risk Tyler drawing more defense before I attacked and that allowed me to draw into a few other counters to slow Tyler down. He also accidentally shuffled all eight cards he had instead of a random six. After that I had my defense set up and was able to hold off the army of priests for the rest of the game. Tyler did manage to draw back into Son of God and TSC to get to four, but between Achim and Golden Calf/Confusion of Mind, he was never able to fully recover and my deck started doing what it had been doing all day up to this point. I figured my deck could bounce back with a few big swing plays but the extent of it in this game was unsuspected. I ended up being able to work through the defense he drew fairly well, mostly thanks to Achim negating Damascus and shutting down the Rezin play, and eventually got to 7.

Full win: 7-4

Round 5 vs Steve Leviton:

If you read Tyler's summary, you'll know that Steve was running Tyler's spare deck which I had seen a little bit of ahead of time, knowing that it was a turbo super-Noah offense with an Assyrian defense. The offense was really good and probably would have gotten Steve a few rescues right off the bat if it weren't for a crucial mistake that I assume was in part due to unfamiliarity with the deck. Steve goes first and is able to find all the Heroes he needs between Numerous as the Stars and rescuing with Adam. He also looked at my hand with Ham's Wife and missed the interrupt and/or CBP portions of Seized by Babylon, which led to him not thinking to play Faith Among Corruption before battle. He attacks with the usual Adam to Shem to Noah rescue for a super-Noah who prevents cards, but I blocked with Pagan Sailors and played Seized to capture the three in battle and Ham's Wife. I had no other answers to that attack and really don't have a whole lot in the deck unless I get my Humble out (Noah and other EC negaters are the reason Humble was a last minute add). Since Noah has to be a one-of in the deck and is the main rescue option, getting him captured early like that made it difficult for Steve's offense to get much going, meanwhile my offense was off to the races. I won't give the full details since this game was actually recorded so go check that out here if you're interested in seeing the deck in action. (The video is only available on Twitch for another couple days, but I should be able to upload it to my YT channel soon and will update the link.)

Full win: 7-0

Final Results: 5-0, +31 LS Differential

Thanks to everyone who played Type 2 and especially Steve for switching last-minute for the second Nats in a row, which put us at an even eight players. I know I had a lot of fun, as I always do playing Type 2, and I hope the rest of you did as well, or at the very least when you weren’t playing me... I do recall Steve mentioning something about our game being torture. :P I'm already looking forward to next year and see what craziness GoC brings to Type 2!

I like the build here. PostEs are a lot of fun to play. With Rotation happening, I am seeing AutO x1, A Soldier's Prayer x1, Falling Away (Wo), Nebuchadnezzer (TexP) x2, Dream x2, Imitating Evil x2 and The Acts of Solomon x1 that will no longer make the cut. So 10 cards total and roughly 10% of the deck that would need to be replaced, if I have counted correctly.
What changes would you make in this and do you see it having an impact in performance of the deck?

Oh yeah, I love playing PostEs. Part of what makes them really good is the speed and flexibility that they have, which rotation does hurt a little. AUtO is a nice couple of free cards and a tutor for Joshua that answers the biggest threats to the offense like Sheol and Golden Calf. A couple ideas for replacement are meek Heroes with good Star abilities like Tamar to get a hand look or Nahor to play a LS from your own deck for setup or your opponent's for Soul gen. Other similar options are Captain, who can get a similar draw like AUtO and a negate, or Angel of the Winds who gets the Joshua (or whoever else) tutor and negates ECs if you go with Joshua.

A Soldier's Prayer is another nice consistency piece that is tough to lose. Even with just running one, my odds of finding a "good card" tutor increases significantly and since it recycles itself, I'd often find myself playing the one ASP 3 to 5 times per game, the last one usually going to discard for a Solomon's Dream. Deciding what to replace it with will be tricky, but it's possible that a few other things get switched around with the Reserve and Feast of Unleavened Bread or Fountain of Living Water takes it's place.

Acts of Solomon is actually a card that I think I'll miss in Type 2 more than I thought I would. Getting an early game double search from Plumb Line, and even winning a battle with it once, was just about as good, if not better, than getting another use of Impartial Judgment. Like I said though, my initial thought is to switch up the reserve slightly and maybe put a Dream or Plumb Line in that spot with Fountain as another way in the deck to grab it. Another solid option is Gifts and Offerings as something to play on Jeshua when going up against big protected demons, which can be tricky for PostEs to deal with.

So overall I don't think the offense takes too big of a hit in rotation, especially with other offenses losing the same stuff. The defense, on the other hand, gets hurt quite a bit with losing Nebby. I think the general concept is still there, but without Nebby to make sure you get Pride early makes things tough. Dream is also a tough loss, but not the worst. Imitating Evil seems like it should be pretty good, but after playing a few games it didn't seem very necessary. Probably ends up being replaced with some battlewinners that help hold off my opponent while I wait for Pride.

Everyone loses Falling Away so that's not a huge deal, although being able to get an extra Exiles trigger "on-demand" was great for getting Solomon's Dream (or another Star GE) back. Not sure if I'll end up replacing it with another Evil Dom like CoW FA or R&D or a good Dom somehow like Grapes. Once GoC comes out I could definitely see Crowd's Choice fitting in here too which would compensate for losing cards like ASP and Nebby.

So yeah, offense I think doesn't change much, but I might try out a different defense and I think the deck will still be pretty strong.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention and didn't realize that you missed Joiada, Son of Eliashib in your list. He's a pretty important one in the Type 2 offense and losing him definitely makes things trickier because you don't get the repeatability of the play-first Impartial Judgment, you only get the one from Ride Things. Sometimes you'll only need to play one and then you can coast with Zechariah the rest of the game, at least in Type 1, but in Type 2 it's going to be trickier since your opponent will have more time to recover. Playing IJ post-block is still decent, but they get SI and can discard the cards in battle so it's not nearly as powerful in that regard. So yeah, that's something that I'll have to take a look at and test. Might need to work on some more battlewinners and lean somewhat into the protection side with Nehemiah and such, but we shall see. Perhaps not quite as cut and dry as I indicated in the previous post.
