If this deck looks familiar that's because it's the same deck Kirk Dennison used at Nats 2013.

Now to understand why I chose to use this deck you have to know how I know Kirk.

Ever since we first met I always looked up to him as the kind of player I wanted to be. Kind, helpful, and most of all, humble. Last season I had the pleasure of helping Kirk with a combo deck and learning more about the mindset it takes to be a good player.

In 2013 Kirk attended Nats and went 2-2 with this deck and the combo deck which was the first Nats he hadn't placed at with a combo deck. I wanted to prove that Kirk's deck could place at a National Tournament with some of the best competition in the country and figured this would be the last chance to do it seeing as he won't be making decks anymore.

So I would like to dedicate this achievement to Kirk's legacy as an exceptional player and a better friend.

Thank you Kirk,
Noah

For anyone who is interested, dual 7 Years of Famine might be the easiest form of hand control out there...if you read my tournament report, I mentioned how in my game against Noah, there were times we both had only a couple cards in hand for several turns. Now you know why...  :P

This is a solid deck, though I believe I could have managed the full win (instead of a tie) if I had simply drawn Wall of Protection (or Son of God obviously).

Ironically, Kirk did not use this deck against me last year and tried his combo deck instead, which I beat. Maybe he should have gone with this one against me as well...  ::)

Looking back, having the 2 Seven Years of Famine in play may have ended up hurting me more then you. :P

Yeah, I think I was out of blocks at that point so you would've won next turn either way.

That's very possible...for a bit I thought I was going to have a shot at forcing you to discard SoG (or at least use it before you drew NJ) with Generous Widow, but couldn't quite get there.

Noah,

I am honored that you chose to use my deck and piloted it so skillfully to finishing on the podium at nationals. Thank you for your kind words. Congrats on a job well done!

I do want to apologize for posting my deck list slightly wrong - I played with 7 Years of Plenty, not Famine. I only realized that now after reading your post and reviewing my initial deck list. I wonder if that would have made the difference in you potentially taking first. The deck is brutally fast and 7 Years definitely contributed to it. I liked to pull out Goshen and Pithom as soon as possible. If I needed to protect my heroes I pulled out Goshen, which saved me from countless Charms, and an early Pithom combined with playing Canaan multiple times usually allowed me to snipe all of my opponents' best heroes and leave them with none or very weak options.

It is even more impressive you did so well considering I misled you slightly with my post.

And yes Justin, I would have done much better against you with this deck or my Thorn in the Flesh deck instead of my combo deck... 8)

That's okay. I think having Seven Years of Famine ended up helping me more overall by stopping my opponents from drawing into SoG and blocks.

I was thinking of asking you about why you used Famine but I didn't want you to know I was using your deck in case I didn't place. The only game I lost was against Jordan and I never even drew Seven Years of Famine anyway so it wouldn't have mattered.

Don't blame yourself for me not getting first. It's my fault for not asking you.

Probably one of the main reasons Noah didn't get first was that despite the fact that his deck was almost optimal for beating mine, our draws were incredibly unbalanced (mine was great, and his was not). He barely drew any defense, and the little he did he had to make a choice whether to use it for his offense or try to block me. My deck set up really fast, and I was able to burn two GoH's to offset the CtB. I also got rid of 2 of his Provisioned guys with Darius' Decree. If the game had lasted long enough, he probably would have closed the gap in time, but the draw unbalance was just too optimal for me to not have a big advantage. I could definitely see how the deck would have caused serious problems with a better draw (as Dayne demonstrated in our game with just Ehud and Canaan).
