The deck went 9-1 with a +29 differential. The night before, I called Nathan Voigt and he told me to switch out Grapes for Burial, which payed off immensely.  Burial would have been overkill, considering both Just a Hireling and Hormah are in the deck.  Looking back at it, my deck wouldn't be what it was without the help of Bill and Nathan Voigt.  They put me through 'boot camp,' where I couldn't take back mistakes, but they could.  It really tightened up my gameplay and was essential to my victory at Nats.
Here's a game-by-game synopsis of Type 1 2P:

Game 1: vs Roy (ReyZen)
Score: 5-1
I drew Nazareth first turn, which proved to be extremely useful.  After attacking with a BTN chain and getting a couple quick souls, he flips up gifts of the magi and attacks with hur.  I smile and draw seven extra cards.  Next turn, he does it again, and I have not one complaint.  He draws another soul and I attack and net my third soul.  He then flips up hidden treasures and plays Daniel and A New Beginning.  At this point, Nazareth has become my favorite card in the deck, but it gets put back to second by Warrior's spear (I'll explain that later.)  He draws souls and attacks, and I block him.  He plays SoG, I attack one more time to get my fourth soul then play SOG myself.  Afterwards, he pats me on the shoulder and says, "You have a very good chance to win it.  Just stay calm and focused."

Game 2: vs Mark Underwood
Score: 5-1
First turn, I attack with helez and israelite archer, but am blocked by two banding herods.  I heal them and wait next turn to push those two banded to ishmaiah, draw three and shoot his Herod Agrippa II, which nets me a soul.  Next turn, he puts up Caesarea Philippi and puts the N.T. therein.  He puts down archelaus as well and beheads ishmaiah with foreign sword.  On my turn, I draw grail and promptly convert archelaus to purple.  I was hesitant as to whether I wanted to take back the grail, and Mark was about to let me, but I decided I didn't want to change it.  Next turn, I convert his Salome to purple, then attack and get a soul with a banding chain.  The reason he hasn't attacked me is that I a have only one soul and it was in Nazareth, which was also drawn first turn.  I felt like a jerk when he played mayhem and I didn't let him take it back, so next time I attacked with a big chain, with foreign sword retrieved with a soldier's prayer and placed on heldai to negate his Herod's dungeon, he tries blocking with a herod and tries playing an enhancement, forgetting it was negated, so I let him take it back.  I get the soul, he plays Sog & NJ and I fall one away.  Next turn he attacks with Joseph and I blocked with a generic pharisee banded to entrapping pharisee banded to proud pharisee.  I capture him then draw two and end the turn.  Next turn I attack, get a soul and play SoG to win it.

Game 3: vs John Earley
Score: 5-0
First turn, he attacks with Seraph with a live coal banded to isaiah with no call.  I block with proud pharisee and play tenants kill the son and kill isaiah, getting the battle to a stalemate.  On my turn, I search deck for warrior's spear and place it on asahel.  I attack with Heldai banded to Asahel and discard Son of God off the top of the deck.... what are the chances?  He blocks with Herod the great, killing asahel.  I play brass serpent.  He doesn't attack next turn.  I then draw archer and strong angel, shooting his Herod and getting the soul.  I walked in a couple more times and get souls.  He attacks a three times; I hold off two rescues, but have to give him a soul after the third and then fall it away.  By this time, I've almost decked, but he has two NT souls and a *4 in his territory.  I exchange for one, attack with the chain, negating his NT in territory and play SoG NJ to win.  That is only part of the reason why warrior's spear is my favorite card in the deck.  It becomes even more useful later on.

Game 4: vs Matt Townsend
Score: 4-5
This was a really good game.  First turn, I get chosen to go first and pull Nazareth (no surprise) and attacked with Heldai banded to Benaiah.  He blocks with Nebby and tries to search, but can't.  He then plays forest fire to discard Nazareth.  First time that's Naz has ever been removed from play by an opponent, and a very good play.  He plays CM on Heldai, and I play Grapes on Nebby and don't attack again.  After this, it was a bit of a blur, with him giving me a soul, then I give him a soul.  I do remember that I didn't have a lot of defense.  Discarding Nazareth came in really handy on the last turn of the game, when he played SoG NJ to get his 3rd and 4th soul then plays harvest time to pull out what would be his last.  I play SoG to get my fourth.  I'm not too bummed out about the game, although it was a loss.  It was a really good game, and Matt Townsend is a very good player.

Game 5: vs Connor Magris
Score: 5-1
I was able to hold off a couple blocks in the beginning of the game, as I netted my first soul.  It turns out he has a few offensive cards that were very similar to mine, and he ended up banding to my chain with maharai.  I fall his soul away and attack to get my second soul.  He attacks again with characters of mine and of his own and gets his first soul.  I attack a third time and play SoG NJ to win that game.

Game 6: vs Drrek
Score: 5-4
This game was close.  At first, I attacked and got a couple free souls.  I later got kind of soul droughted and am kind of sweating bullets has he pulls his third and fourth soul.  I had SoG for a while and became relieved as I drew NJ, attack and play the big two to win.

Game 7: vs Jonathan Greason
Score: 5-2
I don't draw Naz first turn, which was ok.  He attacks a couple times, I block one attack, but gets his first soul within the first two turns.  I attack with an Abishai-Heldai-Ira chain second turn for him to block with assyrian archer banded to ASA, and he discards my hormah in territory.  He makes the mistake of playing DoU when it's negated, and I get the soul.  He attacks again and I Uzzah block.  This is another reason why Warrior's spear is my favorite card in the game.  I place it on Heldai and discard his DoN, and also get the soul.  His following turn was a crucial mistake on his part.  He attacks with AUtO to exchange for Jair; I block with Sabbath Breaker.  He plays Sword against Sword to choose his own Assyrian Survivor, under his control, to block his own Balaam, which I controlled.  He tries to play confusion, forgetting that Balaam prevents it.  After the side battle is resolved, I play Balaams' disobedience, which would come to win me the battle.  To save himself, he plays deborah's directive to band part of my chain in, including Heldai to discard the top card of my deck.  On my turn, I attack again to discard his Grapes with Warrior's spear.  See why I like it so much? Don't worry, it gets better later.  He blocks that battle successfully and ends it in a stalemate.  He tries to attack again, but my hand is loaded with defense at this point and I block successfully.  My next turn I attack for my fourth soul and play SoG to win that game.

Game 8: vs Josh Brinkman
Score: 5-1
Early on in the game, I get a five character chain with Ishmaiah in the middle, and I'm feeling confident.  I attack and he blocks with damsel.  He plays magician's snakes, I play foreign sword to negate it, he then plays 2k horses and plays achan's sin.  Yes, bro.  Problem.  I don't get thrown off, as I have a good number of banders and BTN characters left.  He gets out seraph with a live coal with Wheel within a Wheel on him banded to Isaiah with call.  I have three copies of the deck and tear a plot to discard those two characters and his balaam, which was a crucial play because he had Covenant with Death in his Artifact pile and he could recur it with balaam once I DoN it.  I hold him off for a while, using a variety of different blocks; he does make one successful rescue, but I fall it away.  Later in the game, I have TSA, Captain, Asahel and Ira in territory.  I attack with TSA to win a good number of souls, but he does play DoU while the CBP soul is in play to shuffle in a half-rescued 2-liner, which was a good play on his part.  Once the 2-liner comes back up, I rescue half again.  I block his next turn, then on my turn I exchange that soul to my territory, the logic behind it being that if he rescues a soul, I'll give him the other half.  In the end, however, it wouldn't have made a big difference.  I attack after rescuing half of another 2 liner that he exchanged to my territory and play SoG NJ to win.

Game 9: vs Minister Polarius
Score: 5-2
First turn, I uzzah block a Phillip-Bartholomew block.  On my turn, I have an Abishai-Heldai-Archer-TSA band and attack.  He blocks with Assyrian survivor and plays grapes, which was a slight bummer.  He attacks a few more times, getting half of a 2-liner that I later put under the deck with Hormah; he later gets a soul that I fall away.  Once I got another big chain out, there wasn't much he could do to stop it.  After getting my third soul, he plays SoG to get his second.  A couple more turns and I eventually pull the NJ I'd been waiting for an play it the big two to win.

Game 10: vs Chris
Score: 5-2
In this game, Warrior's spear wins me the game.  First turn, I attack with Captain 3 times.  First turn, Burial.  Second turn, FA.  Third turn I finally get a soul.  He gets a couple souls early on, but I fall one away.  One he flips up Covenant With Death, I slightly start sweatin' bullets.  I don't have DoN or Captured ark to get rid of it.  I attack with TSA and he blocks with Damsel.  Knowing he's gonna play confusion, I play Grapes on her to save myself from the loss.  Later on, he rescues a soul, and I'm running low on defense.  I flip up Gifts, finally get DoN and get rid of his Covenant With Death, and attack.  Warrior's spear hits, once again, Son of God, and I get the half of a 2 liner.  I fee very, very relieved, as next turn he would have walked in to win.  Before the end of my turn, he plays mayhem after figuring out I have SoG NJ in my hand, but since I have Gifts up, I draw 12.  I draw SoG in the 12 cards, which was nice.  He then puts down WatW and plays Water Jar, not hitting my NJ.  He attacks and gets half of a 2-liner.  Next turn, I let out a shout as I draw NJ and play it to win the day!

Great job man! Unfortunately this means you trumped my RNRS T1-2p lead... :( Too bad I couldn't go to Nats so we could have a rematch! Is this deck the same version you played at MW regs?

Before the end of my turn, he plays mayhem after figuring out I have SoG NJ in my hand, but since I have Gifts up, I draw 12.  I draw SoG in the 12 cards, which was nice.  He then puts down WatW and plays Water Jar, not hitting my NJ.  He attacks and gets half of a 2-liner.  Next turn, I let out a shout as I draw NJ and play it to win the day!

You do realize that gifts doesn't let you draw off of Mayhem, right? :police:

If you were to go on a trip... where would you like to go?

Great job Martin! I always knew you were poised for a breakthrough in a big way. That is great to see something unexpected win. Also it is refreshing to see a deck with an actual defense take first at nationals. I wondered if that would happen after the rule changes.

A couple questions:

What did you switch out for Burial? You mentioned in your 2nd post that Nathan said to switch Grapes for Burial but you played Grapes a couple times.

You only needed to rip one plot?

How did this deck fare in other tournaments that you played?

Once again I am so happy for you!

God bless,
Kirk

I switched out grapes for burial.  With all the huge 5 character daniel bands going around, as well as some btn banding, it only made sense to put in grapes.

I only needed to rip one plot, which was against JSB23 and ended up winning me the game.  Not saying I wouldn't have won without playing it, but I had three games left and three plots to play, so I let 'er rip!

At Midwest regionals, I got second in Type 1, third at Missouri state and third at north central regionals.  The third at NC regionals is because I was playing nameless (David Carlson) and he put down eight heroes and three evil characters by turn two, and played a mayhem I couldn't recover from.  A card I switched in a couple days before Nats was Gifts of the Magi, which came in handy very much so.  I had a mildewed house  which I thought would catch people off guard, but I talked to Nathan about it and he said Gifts was a better idea, since everyone would be playing speed.

Yeah, that's me.  I was the one who blocked you thinking I had the CBP soul out when I didn't and wasted my chance to play confusion, then drew the CBP soul the next turn.

Great job, congrats at taking first.

Okay, I wasn't going to do this, but I'd like to point out that this deck is...dare I say...BALANCED. Sure it's speed, but still, there are 16 Heros/Enhancements, and 14 ECs/Enhancements. Dominants are basically split, with Captured Ark being an evil card too. Plus, two defensive sites.

I'm sorry, but I had to say it.

Balanced in numbers yes, but the playstyle is anything but. The defensive cards plus you in so many ways.
