Good afternoon Redemption community,

I have spoken over the past few months with several people regarding a new idea for a format. This new format is a variation of Type 1-2 Player that uses the same rule set except for how turn structure and first turn works. Both players share a Draw, Preparation, and Discard phase creating more interaction and increasing the speed of the game.

No unique ban or errata list exists for Eye for an Eye. The Type 1-2 Player ban and errata list is used for this format.

Eye for an Eye is a Rotation format. Only Rotation legal cards can be used.


Eye for an Eye setup:

Game Setup
-This phase is the same as T1-2p's ruleset

Beginning of Game Procedure
-This phase is the same as T1-2p's ruleset

Turn Structure:

Draw Phase
-Both players draw on every Draw phase including the first turn of the game after completing the Beginning of Game procedures.
-During the Draw phase, both players' stars and souls activate with the turn player going first and the second player after (in the same fashion as it would in a regular T1-2P’s Beginning of Game procedures).

Upkeep Phase
-This phase is the same as T1-2p's ruleset

Preparation Phase
-During this phase, the turn player gets regular initiative to play a card (Other than a Dominant which only requires Dominants Initiative as per the regular T1-2P rule set) or pass the phase.
-If the turn player passes the phase, the next phase begins.
-Before the phase changes, the opponent gets Dominant Initiative. If the opponent chooses to play a Dominant, the phase change fails and the turn player again gets regular initiative to play or may pass the turn.
-If the turn player plays a card, the opponent then gets regular initiative or may decline. If the opponent declines, regular initiative returns to the turn player (opponents cannot end the phase).
-Only the turn player may activate an Artifact, move a Lost Soul into a Site, move a character in or out of a site/fortress, or any other rules based preparation phase action that is not mentioned above.

Battle Phase
-This phase is the same as T1-2p's ruleset

Discard Phase
-During this phase, the turn player gets regular initiate to play a card (Other than a Dominant which only requires Dominants Initiative as per the regular T1-2P rule set) or pass the phase.
-If the turn player passes the phase, the next phase begins.
-Before the phase changes, the opponent gets Dominant Initiative. If the opponent chooses to play a Dominant, the phase change fails and the turn player again gets regular initiative to play or may pass the phase.
-If the turn player plays a card, the opponent then gets regular initiative or may decline. If the opponent declines, regular initiative returns to the turn player (opponents cannot end the phase).

End Phase
-This phase is the same as T1-2p's ruleset

Once the turn has been passed, the opponent (second player) becomes the turn player and the turn structure repeats as usual until the game is completed.

Can opponent's play TC characters when they have initiative in prep or only enhancements?

Yes, the opponent can play Territory Class characters or enhancements during the preparation phase if they receive initiative. This might change if the act of playing a TC character is too powerful on an opponent’s turn.

So which exact options will the non-turn player have for playing cards during the opponent's prep-phase? So all cards can be played wich are playable during prep phases but not those stuff you mentioned that can happen in prep phases.

I guess, similar to prep phase non-turn player cannot do things that could be done in DC phases like e.g. using new Storehouse since it mentions "each DC phase" - or how shall card like those be handled?

Thanks for the input,

I will clarify in the original post regarding the Draw phase: Both players are intended to draw each draw phase, including the first turn of the game. This means both players are drawing 3 cards every turn.

During the Preparation phase, all cards are legal for play when the non-turn player (opponent) has the initiative to play a card except for the restrictions mentioned above in the original post.

During Discard phase, all actions are legal for play as they would be in a Type 1 format discard phase. Cards as you mentioned like Storehouse would only activate on your turn. This is because the way Storehouse is worded it refers to only your Discard phase is in reference to your turn similar to how the it is defined in the REG under the entry for Upkeep, and Turn.

Thank you! IMO every player drawing 3 every turn would be too much. So only player in turn should get the D3. Also the player in turn has to cut down to 8 at the end of the turn while the other player does not have to. This would give the 2nd player an advantage while both players can play cards in all the 3 phases!

(Oh: Can you please also briefly give a short reference to the REG where you found that "each" description? I just found the one within the "Conditional Phrases and Ability Classes"? Thank you!)

Good morning,

Only through testing will we be able to see the outcome of both players drawing being too advantageous. Through I can see their being issues with the shared draw, I can also see a benefit where certain strategies benefit off of utilizing that additional draw to overcome their opponent. The shared draw could allow for defensive heavy decks to be more competitive alongside speed decks.
