Post by: The Schaef on August 17, 2006, 02:29:58 PM: Board Game Designers Forum (http://www.bgdf.com/tiki/tiki-custom_home.php) is a great resource for all kinds of elements of game deisgn and development, from the starting concept through development, testing, packaging and selling. It recently had a huge site upgrade so a lot of the old resources are not on the new site yet, but you can still access the archives of the old site. And I expect this site will continue to build and develop into something even better than the original was.

Board Game Geek (http://boardgamegeek.com/) also has a forum dedicated to design (http://boardgamegeek.com/geekforum.php3?action=viewforum&forumid=15&objectid=1&objecttype=forum).

This post (http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/106114) is a press release by Eagle Games promoting a "Game Designers Toolkit" they are developing, but according to their website, it is scheduled for release Q4 2006

Since that toolkit's not out yet, another option is a "combat mat". Crystal Caste sells these (http://www.crystalcaste.com/miva/merchant.mv?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=CC&Category_Code=CM) in three different sizes, they have squares on one side and hexes on the other side, they're made of a wet-erase vinyl, and they also sell markers you can use. If you're game design includes a static board, this might be a good starting point for determining how you want to lay out your board. Chessex also sells these (http://chessex.com/mats/Battlemats_&_Megamats.htm).

If you want to design games, then you need to play tons of them. The more games you play the more mechanics you become familiar with. You will also learn why you like certain games and why you dislike others.

Post by: The Schaef on August 17, 2006, 03:15:59 PM: I agree that experience is the best teacher, but there's also something to be said for tapping the experience of others, standing on the shoulders of giants, etc. BGDF has opened my eyes to some very intriguing notions of gameplay that I might never have thought of otherwise, and they are usually good about referring people to certain games that have good implementations of those mechanics (e.g. Catan vs. Monopoly)

While the Zelda game idea is the first one I have ever come up with, I have played quite a few ccg/tcg/csg games in my time, and one of the things I have been trying to do with this game is take some of the best mechanics out of some of my favorite games, and combine them to create mechanics and gameplay that I don't believe has ever been used before. Even if the copywrited Zelda material cannot be used, I would like this game to be good enough that no matter who the characters are, the mechanics would make it fun.

Just last night I was working on the movement mechanic for my newest game and I kept thinking "Alan Moon is a genius. I do wish I could steal, ur, 'borrow' his movement mechanic from Elfenland." Then I got to thinking about the Hansa movement mechanic and ended up using something similar, coupled with a movement mechanic from Tikal. I think it will work.

Anyway, my designs get better the more games I play. I would also say that your second best source of help is a solid, knowledgable playgroup. They are invaluable.

That is interesting, I have never seen it before. Just an FYI, Redemption does have an online player called RTS (Redemption Table Simulator). You can find all sorts of info on it here (http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/message_boards/index.php?topic=12218.0).
