I will agree they were good movies in and of themselves, but they did not live up to the standard Tolkien set. Before you ask examples, one word: Bombadil.Butchered is nowhere near the right word. Bombadil was cut because it would have been at least a 15 minute scene in a 3 hour long movie that doesn't actually have anything to do with the plot itself. As much as I love Tom Bombadil, it was not prudent that it remain in the movie, even the extended edition. As far as book-to-movie transitions go, Lord of the Rings is actually extremely faithful. Yes, they had to cut and change things, but that was to make the movies more cinematic, especially in Return of the King.

I was more disappointed with Saruman dying early and there being no scourging of the shire. That was the best part of the entire book.
