When people think of 3D, they are still stuck in the past of having things thrown at you instead of just adding depth to the movie.  Now, it's more like the movie is on a stage instead of a flat screen (so nothing is thrown at you during the production).

The issue is we're still a long way off from any viable 3D technology that doesn't completely alienate a good chunk of an audience. For some people (the number 30% sounds right, but I'm not sure) 3D doesn't work at all for them, other people, especially those with some sort of preexisting condition, get headaches or some other such problem from watching 3D films. Supposing I want to go see the Hobbit with some friends, if they decide to watch it in 3D, it's not even worth going for me, which means that money was just lost for them. It's why 3D isn't a good strategy if it turns out to be a fad, which appears to be the case.

I do not think 3D is just a fad, I think people started to realize they need better 3D, I have heard they Are trying to make 3D with no glasses. Wouldn't that be nice (I have not been to a 3D film in a very long time, and those glasses annoyed me then too).

I was actually NOT wanting to see the Hobbit in 3D, but my brother-in-law dragged me to it over the holidays, and I was pleasantly surprised.

The last movie I saw in 3D (Pirates of the Caribbean 4) I actually found to be less enjoyable in 3D (though it could be related to the movie itself). I have a dominant eye and the red/blue old 3D never worked for me, so at least this newer one does tend to work, though it gives me some strain. However, I ended up watching about half the movie with the glasses lifted up and out of my vision (again, you couldn't do that with old red/blue 3D, so at least there's that small improvement) due mostly to the fact that the glasses darken everything you view through them. Dark movies (like PotC 4) become almost unviewable with the glasses because it's too dark to see anything. I don't know how light/dark The Hobbit is (though I can definitely see some dark scenes being plausible based on the book), but either way I honestly don't see the point in spending extra money when I can enjoy old fashioned non-3D movies perfectly well. I will be trying my best to see it in regular format when I finally get to see it.

I didnt like the end. It's not that was bad ( it was a cool thing to do with Smaug) but it annoys me that they are breaking it up.although, it means they are going more in depth with the stuff in it.

Finally got around to watching it tonight, actually thought it was pretty decent. Not as boring and sluggish as when I read the book. Although it may have been the stuffed crust Pizza Hut pizza consumed during the movie talking...stuffed crust makes everything better.

I thought Azog was the blandest villain ever. Seemed like a complete copy of the alpha-male vampire in I Am Legend.

Azog was pretty bland, but I think blandest bad guy ever has got to be Soran from Star Trek Generations.  That guy was so pitiful that you just felt sorry for him the whole movie.  Some bad guys want to take over the universe, or at least a planet.  All Soran wanted to do was catch a ride on the Nexus.  He was kinda like a interplanetary surfer without any of the humor and fun that you would expect from a surfer.  Imagine Ben Stein whining for an hour and a half about how he just can't catch a wave.

I just watched it about a week ago in Africa! There isn't even a movie theater were I was!!!
How this worked was: There is a missionary family called the acksons who have a move and pizza night every Friday (pizza is a rarely served treat in Bamenda, Cameroon). One night we watched The Hobbit. MR. Jackson got this movie when a DVD showed up at his front door. It was a copy they ship to certain people so that those certain people can preview it before it comes out. Whoever got this copy scrubbed out his name from the whole thing and just left it a mystery.

It was actually tossed at his front door in an attempt to hide the evidence, as the DVD pirates were being hotly pursued by Interpol.

This would be a DVD screener. Same thing I watched.
