In short, because it's obviously forced to sell tickets at the expense of making sense. It doesn't make sense given the old starwars cast nor do they have enough time during the movie to justify casting a plethora of races into main roles. There was just not enough time allotted, and rightfully so, for them to explain meaningfully why a pilot that just died and Rose had a special bond. I guess it was because they were both Asian? ok cool, shallow explanation but at least that's better than creating multicultural relationships which leave both races wondering were the attraction actually is (e.g., finn-rey, finn-rose, Chewbacca-odd,old, mercenary type lady** tangentially related). And that's the point, you are forced to wonder about questions during the movie that are not star wars questions; not even questions to help you think critically about the real issues behind them. Which brings me to the major problem: it's the star-wars universe! The universe where everyone is from Nebraska. I don't want to be reminded explicitly of all the races on earth and of all the political turmoil. Obviously, allusions to our problems on earth should be made cleverly and subtly in an alternate universe. Secondly, I don't know if my opinion represents the majority fan base, so whatever Disney writer think is best is fine. But I say "think" liberally here because if they would have cared at all about the integrity of their own story, they would have definitely cast Rose as black because it would have made the kiss at the end more believable and thus her character more esteemed, because Rose could have been the girl who justifiable stole his heart away from rey. As of right now she's a nice SJW who misinterpreted body language. They have wound them selves into a corner with their seemingly arbitrary casting of people for the sake of a diverse cast. HAHA I think it's funny because if Rose and Finn end up getting together we gonna be like waah?? he's happy with rose when he could have had rey? Unrealistic. If Rose and Finn do not get together her character was a complete 30-45 minute waste. Whereas if Rose was black and/or beautiful and/or white now we talking. Most importantly, as handsome as finn is, he deserved better.  It would have taken no time at all to justify their relationship and we might have a legitimate love feud in the next movie because I think he still loves rey.

This is just one aspect of the issues with the movie. *yoda voice* Many more problems there are *end yoda voice (unless you like it)*, and as they pile up you definitely can't say these plot flaws are "details". Disney is careless and does not care. It really can't be difficult to ruin the plot and dialogue of starwars....isn't the hardest part the cgi??

Um... they were sisters. Not much more special of a bond than siblings.

Yup. An entire galaxy, with literally thousands of habitable planets and whose most populous species is humans, has less diversity than our planet. Yup.

I'm not sure what you mean when you say that Rose is an sjw. As the (unfortunate) acquaintance of a real-life one, she didn't strike me that way at all.

At the risk of getting this moved to Open Discussion, I'm not even gonna touch your apparent opinions on skin tone and their relevance in relationships.
ANB is good. Change my mind.

They were clearly sisters.

I missed the fact that they were sisters. But I doubt it would have been touching enough to make me care more about her. Point is, they could have cast lots of different ethnicitys in her role that would have been more of a strategic fit given her character story of falling in love with Finn.

Yeah, see if Disney has any dissenters on their cast decision, which is intertwined with the Finn-Rose tangent, they can just pull the whole "those people are racist". It's a nice cover up for being blatantly lazy; I am just able to see through it.
Well yeah she wasn't the quintessential cringy SJW. But if you like the spirit of the mentality obviously you're going to portray that in the best possible light. Specifically, she gave off that vibe when she was worried about the animals and slave children at the casino planet. Touching but ultimately stupid. Not only did she make comments about being aware of that she set them free and ruined the casino, and arguable, those who casino endeavor along with it. Star wars is not the place to bring up these issues. First because there's not enough time to make their allusions to our problems more than corny. Second, because these references take you right out of the starwars universe mentally. Finally, because it wastes time from what most people want starwars to be (pew pew, vroom vroom, cool aliens).

That's good because it sounds like you don't understand what I am saying anyways, that is, if you want to conflate my opinions on how race plays a role in audience perception love stories with my opinions on interracial dating irl. And implying that it's some how bad to think skin  tone is relevant to dating is interesting. Of course it can be relevant, people make those kinds of choices all the time in dating; people have the right to date whoever they want to! It's not racist to have preferences, though, I think an open-mind is by more far advantageous to all parties.

Yup. An entire galaxy, with literally thousands of habitable planets and whose most populous species is humans, has less diversity than our planet. Yup.

It was part of a deviation from the original star wars that seemed unoriginal given our political climate and how easy it is to just through in everyone. The core issues isn't about race it's about upholding the integrity of the star wars universe. Blue people are fine lol Mace Windu fine lol but I have a slight feeling that if Disney was tasked with doing the prequels that the whole jedi counsel would be all colors of the rainbow.

ok? You cherry picked that right out of it's context.

lol I can't really blame him too much.... It's got to be hard acting across generations, in one interview he didn't even realize he was being video taped! But obviously he put Disney in a tough spot. I hope it wasn't his idea to toss the light saber over the cliff?

Just watched the movie. I haven't read all the posts in this thread. I wasn't impressed by the movie, but it still was fun family entertainment for a day.

IMO, the basic problem with this movie is that they were trying too hard at misdirection that it led the movie in no particular direction. For those of us who are old enough to remember, there were two things in particular that made the original Star Wars movies exceptional:

1. I didn't know the whole back story about the "Galaxy far, far away," so everything was new and unexpected.
2. There was no internet to give out spoilers, so I was shocked and appalled by the revelation that Darth Vader was Luke's father, that Luke was not going to save Han from the bounty hunter, that Luke was no match for Darth Vader, that the second Death Star was fully operational, and that Darth Vader actually had some good left in him. All those scenes bucked the trend of hero movies in those days.

As I watched "The Last Jedi," I could not help but feel that the director/writer was trying to recreate that feeling of uncertainty and unexpectedness. It did not work in "The Force Awakens" since I saw Han's death coming from a mile away. This movie seemed to be trying to set up cliche rescues, and then "shock" me with their failures. I know there is a lot of talk about the "wasted time" in Finn and Rose's trip to the casino planet, but I think that was all an attempt to trick me into thinking that their scheme would ultimately work. Similarly, I was supposed to believe that the shuttles would all sneak safely away onto the fortress planet, that Rey would escape Snoke to fight him another day, and that Luke was a dormant hero ready to become The Matrix's Neo...... However..... SURPRISE! None of that happened. I was supposed to be as shocked as I was in 1978 and 1980. Unfortunately, I wasn't.

That, to me, was the source of my disappointment. I'm not really going to go into my personal pet peeve about Disney movies/TV shows that make women the misunderstood heroes and men the problem with the world (i.e. Maleficent). I was waiting for Laura Dern to reprise her Jurassic Park line about "women inherit the Earth."  ;)

Hey YMT,

As another person who saw the original movies in theaters, I have just one question for you...

2. There was no internet to give out spoilers, so I was shocked and appalled by the revelation that Darth Vader was Luke's father,

Did you believe that Darth Vader was Luke's father at the time? I remember being firmly in the camp of those who believed that Vader was lying simply to trick Luke into joining the Empire.

(Yes--younguns--that is exactly how shocking that twist was back in the day.)

At first I thought he was trying to deceive Luke, but when Vader called out to Luke with the force, and Luke responded, "Father," I was convinced it was true. But it still left a bad taste in my mouth for weeks, like finding out that your parents were once siblings or that Charles Manson was your real dad.  :o

There are still people alive that saw the original Star Wars in theaters?!

I find your lack of age disturbing.  :maul:

It's also worth noting that the original Star Wars was the first movie I had ever seen in a cinema (before that movies were outdoors...no, really), and also the only movie that I have ever seen more than twice in a theater (I actually saw Star Wars about 12 times....I just couldn't get enough).

Yes. There are those out here that saw the original trilogy in theaters. I saw 'Return of the Jedi' in theater,  in Grand Prairie Texas when it first came out.  I was 6 yrs old and with my mom and her sister.
We will be going home to Jesus soon!

Fortunately, Thomas Edison invented motion pictures just a few years earlier, so we had something to watch when we went in the theater.  :)

Saw it for the first time last night...while I wasn't overly disappointed I felt a bit unsatisfied, and I think YMT nailed it with this analysis.

I know people's opinions are pretty solidified at this point, but if anyone with time to waste is looking for something to listen to (and isn't yet convinced that the Last Jedi is objectively bad ;) ), I've just finished listening to these excellent video critiques on the Last Jedi. No bad language, so no worries there.

Part 1
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vw7pcCj0ORk&t=220s

Part 2
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_gRC4L6lNoc&t=4s

Part 3
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yFnMMzqjYGw

These summarize my thoughts better than anything I've posted here. It's about 5 hours long, so, yeah, it can't possibly get any more comprehensive. Listen while you work!

Not trying to start an argument (only interested in understanding the other side of the divided coin), but if anyone actually listens to this all the way and can still defend the movie as objectionably good after all the points brought up, I will be interested in knowing why.

That's all. Carry on. 8)
If you were to go on a trip... where would you like to go?
