Spiderman VS The Amazing Spiderman

Let me start off with some ground rules:

1: I expect and encourage spoilers in the discution... If you haven seen the new one you have been warned.

2: Please no Batman references. I too love the dark knight series but this thread is not for that.

Let me know what you guys think about the two. Which one did you like more? Compare anything! Casting, directing, the fights, the character development. All's fair in Love and NY.

I just saw the new one last night with my son. Entertaining.... but not like the original. However, I am completely biased because I grew up with old-school Spider-Man.

I am not a big fan of The Amazing Spiderman. It was entertaining enough, but is an more smart-alecky Peter Parker, Gwen Stacy instead a Mary Jane Watson, and updated "science" really enough to warrant a reboot?

I guess I was spoiled by other reboots like the Dark Knight saga or Enterprise where what was added to the story's universe more than made a new lease on life worthwhile.

I did not care for the new actor as Peter Parker. Tobey Maguire was so perfectly cast in the original that no other actor can really fill that role for me. The original Aunt May and Uncle Ben were well cast, too. Having Sally Field and Martin Sheen fill the roles in the new one was awkward. I wanted to drive a Trans Am into Vietnam. I also agree that no MJ was an unusual choice.

The movie just seemed too rushed for me.  Overall it was worth seeing once, but it is not nearly the juggernaut that the original became.

I have yet to see the new one, but I can't believe you liked Tobey Maguire. I thought he was really terrible, and I haven't met many who thought otherwise.

Gwen Stacy is the original love interest. In many ways, the reboot is more true to the comic book. So, it wasn't just a random choice.

He fit the ideal of geeky-science-kid-turned-unintended-superhero quite well. Ironically, you're the first that I had heard didn't like him. I think he is an extraordinary actor. I had thought his role was acclaimed by the critics.

I am going by the Spider-Man of the 70's and 80's (my time period). In those days, MJ was the love interest. Gwen was there, too, but not in the way that the new movie depicts.

I bought Emma Stone as a top level scientist still in high school far more than Kirsten Dunst as a working actress. Just sayin'.

I'll agree with you there. I didn't care much for Kirsten Dunst as an actress (real or imaginary). With all the great casting from the original, she was the one sore spot.

Emma Stone did a wonderful job as Gwen.

I liked both movies and the Dr.'s story was always one of my favorites. I have to say for whatever reason his face in lizard form annoyed me. I mean he had this huge ferocious body and claws but a flat face? Where did the Raptor Head go???

That was indeed annoying. That's why earlier I said that the film felt rushed - not only the story progression, but also the production quality. The CGI overall was not very impressive. I guess I expected more nowadays, since Jurassic Park looked so real, and that was 20 years ago. Shouldn't they have made better strides in CGI by now?

I think plot wise both spider mans were good, but I like the new spider man charachter rather than the old one. Seemed more real to me.

That is a generational difference, which I think was the intention of the reboot. The old-school Spider-Man was more akin to the character that Tobey Maguire portrayed. That is why it had such a large appeal to my generation. People my age that have teenage children were the target audience.

The new Spider-Man is more like the modern comic version, which is intended to appeal more to your generation. I never said that the new version was bad, it just was not intended for people like me. I am no longer the target audience.

Yeah, I meant as a real working actress :P Kirsten Dunst in no way deserved to be the outspoken, spunky, and energetic MJ. Ironically enough, Emma Stone could have pulled off MJ remarkably well, especially since she was a scarlet haired spark plug on film for so long.

My friend summed it nicely "It has a Twilight style awkward high school romance"

-That means it wasn't targeted toward me either YMT, don't feel bad....although I am relatively soon to be entering that "turning 30 and still playing a children's card game demographic"...

I preferred the old Parker. He came off as mor intelligent to me.

Besides this new spiderman is waaaayyyyy less amazing than the last. This new one is more of a super free runner. I mean, he seems to have almost no jumping ability at all and he can't even get to the villain without help.

YMT I agree on it feeling rushed. Plus everyone and their grandma knows spiderman is Parker.

I saw "Amazing Spider-Man" last Friday. I thought it was okay. I actually prefer Michael Sheen's performance of Uncle Ben over Cliff Robertson's. (I know, blasphemy.) Sheen's version of the character is a lot like a guy I know at Church.

I think Lizard looked stupid, but I really like Rhys Ifan's portrayal of Curt Conners. Again, he was better than the original guy.

As good as I thought this movie was, I still think that Sam Raimi's movies were far better. (And BTW, it's weird that a guy who played a Tennessean on "Doctor Who" played Spider-Man. :P)

Severely disappointed one of the best comic book lines ever created was not in the movie.

Stan Lee's cameo great as always.

And the IMAX 3D, especially more towards the end, was really awesome.

I have to say this might have been Stan's best cameo yet.

Stan said that that was his favorite cameo he has ever done.

I have to second Alex on this one, I thought he was bad in the first, awful in the second, and horrible in the 10 minutes of the third that I watched before turning it off (hate what they did to Brock/Venom, awful actor choice for that one, but that's another story). I've oft compared Toby in those Spider-man films to Hayden Christensen in the Star Wars prequels. :2cents:
