So I finally watched this show, quite accidentally. The show is now available on Netflix. My wife was looking for something for my daughter to watch and saw "My Little Ponies," so she figured that would be perfect for my little princess. Little did she know...

My daughter is now hooked. She wants to watch several episodes every day. As her father, I am compelled to watch shows with her when she is this excited about them. Interestingly (in light of this thread) I have found that I can bear watching this show much more than shows like Barbie and Strawberry Shortcake. The latter shows make me want to excuse myself at every opportunity, but I can easily sit through full episodes of Ponies. As an RPG freak, I was pleasantly surprised to see a Griffon, Manticore, and Red Dragon all within the first few episodes.

One of the recent episodes caught my attention in particular. The attention to detail was impressive to me. One pony is trying to earn their "cutie mark" but doesn't know what they want to be their niche. The pony tries a variety of careers to see if any of them "fit." At one point the pony tries baking, and makes cupcakes. The cupcakes are apparently nasty tasting, so the pony gives up that endeavor. The show is building up to a party where all the rival ponies already have their mark, and make fun of the one pony who does have their mark yet. Although there is a life lesson built in here, the part that impressed me was in the background. Every once in a while, as the pony is trying to hide the fact that she doesn't have a mark yet, there is a snack table or tray that appears in the background. A random pony then takes one of the snacks, which is a cupcake, takes a bite and then hurls. They did this several times at random intervals. I thought it was hilarious.

There's a LOT of references that the original target audience wouldn't understand in this show. They wanted the show to be enjoyable for the parents too, and that is most likely why guys ended up enjoying it too.

Yeah, the attention to detail and continuity in this show is VERY well done.

We're only up to about the 12th episode, but so far it seems more like a Sorcerer's Apprentice storyline with an Odd Couple flair. It's definitely not what I expected, but my daughter loves it anyway.

2 Samuel 1:27

What exactly does this mean?

-------------------------------------

The most recent episode we watched had a cockatrice in it. A cockatrice! What little girl has ever heard of one of these? That was put in the episode for me. Only a person who knows legends & lore, or has played D&D could possibly know what it is. I found it interesting how they tied it into the show with the Cutie-Mark Crusaders looking for the missing chicken.

This should serve as definitive evidence that this show was not just created for little girls. This show reminds me of the old D&D cartoon from the 80's, except the adventurers are ponies instead of children.

I won't say which episode (so you can enjoy it when it happens), but one of them briefly features a Cerberus that escaped from Tartarus (name specifically mentioned).

Took them long enough to upload an HD version of it....

Well Season 2 Ended with a Great Episode.

I agree, that episode was really good. Bring on Season 3. BTW, John de Lancie confirmed that he did more voice work for the show... so more discord in S3?

I Hope So.
Also, The Mind Controlling Shape-shifters were completely unexpected and The Evil Witch with Green Fire was so Disney.

As long as the overall quality of the show stays the same (or improves) I'll be happy.

Also, how come Luna got an episode, but Celestia has never been more than a background character. I hope she gets her own episode in Season 3 (or maybe an episode about both of them).

Yeah, But More of a History Type Thing. We Had Hearths Warming Eve which Showed us the Founding of Equestria, But From there until the First Episode is a Giant Blank. The Origins of Celestia, Luna and Discord (And the Story Mentioned in the Love Poison book) are an interest of many. And Where Did these changelings come from?, As well. I Would really Like a Creation Legend episode but its a bit of a stretch.

Whoa! Whoa! We're only on Season One. Slow down on the spoilers.

We just watched the Green Dragon episode (which came after the Phoenix episode). BTW, my wife is now hooked.

If you went from the Phoenix episode to the one with Spike and the Owl (and the green dragon) you skipped one.
