What relatively obscure artists do people like? All I can think of is AWOLNATION for myself. What about other people?

Is AWOLNATION that obscure? "Sail" (and to a lesser extent, "Kill Your Heroes") have been played on alternative stations for a while, and "Sail" has been in the top 50 of the Billboard Hot 100 for weeks now. (Not that I'm complaining - I do like AWOLNATION.)

A few bands I like that don't get much, if any, radio play: Brave Saint Saturn, Streetlight Manifesto, A Perfect Circle, MeWithoutYou, Dream Theater, The Perfects, Barcelona. For varying levels of "obscure". (For instance, Dream Theater is huge within their genre, but they've never had a charting single on any Billboard chart. A Perfect Circle is well-known to Tool fans, but outside of some very minor rock radio hits, they're small potatoes.)

Red: I got to see Anchor And Braille live by accident once. I went to a show of four bands I'd never heard of at the time: Barcelona, Copeland, Anchor And Braille, and Sherwood. Unfortunately, I liked Anchor And Braille the least out of those. :)

Depends on your definition of obscure. Something that is obscure in America (Nightwish, for example) can be a huge hit overseas. Or, as Tim pointed out, bands can be "obscure" but still big in their genre.

I like Muse. They aren't as big as they should be here (but they are gaining popularity) but in Europe they are extremely popular.

I Am Alpha and Omega, for starters. A great metal band that doesn't get a lot of attention. Listen through their album "The Roar and the Whisper." Really good stuff.

Life in Your Way is really good too.

And a band that shouldn't be as obscure as they are, ApologetiX. They describe themselves as a mix of Billy Graham and "Weird Al" Yankovic. They parody secular songs and they have a Christian twist to them. Some songs can be silly, and some can be dead serious. I highly recommend them.

I'm friends with the wife of their lead singer.  I've listened to several of their albums, and they are very talented at being able to play a WIDE variety of genre at a surprisingly high quality.  Their lyrics are well crafted, and best of all, they really love God.  They also stay pretty closely connected with their fans.

P.S.  They are currently auditioning for a new musician to join their band (bass player I think).

Well, sense this is turning into obscure christian music, how about Barlowgirl? They split up, but their album How Can We Be Silent was good.

On a side note, Skillet is releasing a new album in July.

Huge fan of the Mountain Goats (seriously), I also love Hania (Hear you Scream is a masterpiece).

We should probably tighten our definition of "obscure" if Muse and Relient K are names being thrown around.  ::)

A while back I got into Alestorm - a Folk Pirate Metal Band. The only "underground" Christian band I've listened to with any kind of regularity is Eleventyseven, though in hindsight, they're pretty terrible, and I only listen to them for nostalgic purposes. Oh No! Oh My! is an indie pop band, which I have loved for a long time now. Nothing else I listen to is really underground, other than this band from the 60s called the Beatles.

I hereby put forth the notion that "obscure" means "does not have a Wikipedia page." Which I suppose makes my original Defiance, Ohio post incorrect.

I like Saturday Sun.

Expect every single artist posted in here to be made retroactively unobscure.
