Then there's his other drum kit he doesn't show off very frequently... mostly because it takes him so long to set it up to take pictures of it!

Oh wait, his name isn't mike......

Thats about as big as Bozzio's kit:

Dude, you have 9(?) cymbals, The most I've seen are 4 cymbals with a five piece set. Or 9 cymbals with a 7 piece set.

And what Is "1 up 2 down" and what is a FX cymbal?

Its actually pretty common for a drummer to play a 4 or 5 piece, and have 7 or more (sometimes many more) cymbals. You have hats, ride, 2 or 3 crashes, 1 or 2 splashes, and then all the FX cymbals on top of that. 1 up 2 down refers to the tom configuration. I have one tom up on the rack, and two down on one of Tama's tom stands. FX cymbals would be basically anything that isn't a splash, crash, ride, or hats. That would include bells, chinas, stacks, etc.

I know, right? Haha :D Its pretty crazy, haven't really seen anything else like it. Takes his crew pretty much a full day to set up... ridiculous!

The drums were pretty good... How old are you? I judged about 15 or 16 from what I could tell in the vids, but not sure.

I was expecting a more heavy beat for the songs with "metal" in the title. Do you listen to bands like For Today?

I'm 19, the drum track I did for that song remained fairly true to the original, so you can take it up with the composer, heh ;) I listen to pretty much every style of music out there.

Haha, I thought you were younger than that, but oh well...

For Today's drumlines are amazing, but they aren't that hard to play. That's how REAL heavy metal is played.

And, they're Christian. Which is awesome.

To be frank, theres a TON of different categories under "metal drumming"...

Metal can range from slow and heavy, (sometimes no double bass at all), to blistering power or thrash metal speeds (Almost entirely double bass).

It all depends on the style you like best.

That is so ugly...
just because mommy and daddy hate skulls and won't let you listen to real music doesn't mean you have to hate on it.  :-X

For Today isn't really heavy metal, its more along the lines of metalcore. You want to hear some pretty good drumming in the Christian metal scene, check out Becoming the Archetype. Death metal is where the crazy drum parts are at, if you can stomach it.

metal drumming is tough, You have a dual pedal for your kick drum. So while you play with both hands, you also play with both feet. I don't think it's just for metal drumming though, I figured techno uses the metal peddle to make the beat faster.

Playing double bass really isn't that difficult, almost every style of music requires 4 way independence at some level with your left foot on the hats. The difficulty arises when you're pushing the speed boundaries (220+ I would say) but its the same problem with the hands and feet.

its better than any drum set evar.

RIP rev

You of course know that Portnoy is now rocking A7X ;)

I agree with that assessment. Although I'm not really into A7X at all, only listened to a couple songs. Portnoy is killer, man.

For Today is one of few Christian bands that can actually contend with the non-Christian bands, in that they have ridiculously AWESOME bass drops. Becoming the Archetype is pretty good, their Physics of Fire album has some crazy good melodies. In the Midst of Lions has some less-conspicuous bass drops, but they are also up there with For Today (not as good, but close).

I just can't wait for BTA's next album. In fact, I was talking to their keyboard player about possibly doing some work with them on it ;) They have written a couple of my favorite songs of all time in the death metal genre. Ever hear End of Age and Evil Unseen? Check those out!

It sounds good. The only thing I would change is the sound of the hi-hat, I didn't hear it.

And do you have those clip on mics for your drum set? and do you use a soft wear for your computer? If so, what kind? I would like to get into techno drumming by using the clip on mics and making the noises of the drum sound weird, but I don't know how much all of it would cost and how much the program would be.

Thats odd, the hats come through nice and high in the mix.

You can cheap rim clip mic packs for around $200, but you'll also need an interface with around 6-8 mic pres (since you'd be close micing, that will run you at around $300) and you also need Logic or Pro Tools, which will run you between $200 - $500. Basically, it costs a grand to get a recording setup going for a drum set, plus the cost of the drums and computer, of course.

I have a computer. And would audacity work? I think it's free. And I should be getting a drum set for my 16th B-day.

You need a fully functioning DAW that can deal with multitrack recording, heavy digital manipulation, and your sequencing needs. Logic would probably wind up being the best choice in the long run. I really like Pro Tools though myself, just because I'm more familiar with it.

I'm pretty sure I've only listened to their album Dichotomy like twice, but I'm sure I liked it... Will download it today to my Zune.

One of the best.  I use "How Great Thou Art" to prove that one can be metal and still Christian.
