I/J Starter "Cheap Upgrade" Contest

I'm hoping to start some new players in Redemption using the I/J decks. I have a huge pile of common cards laying around, and this got me to thinking. How could you do a "cheap" upgrade of the starter decks? Sure, anyone can add a NJ, Grapes, AoCp, and cards like that, but how could you make these decks better (if not exactly tournament-ready) on a budget? So here's my proposal:

Build a deck out of the cards in the Starter sets. You'll choose one as your "base" deck, but you can add cards from the other starter for free. (So you can add the extra doms, swap out a defense/offense, etc.) The deck must follow T1 deck building rules, but can be any size you can make it under the contest restrictions.

Now you get your budget: $10. But you've already spent $6.25 for your starter deck (I'm only charging for one!), so you only have $3.75 left. AND you can only buy cards that list for under 0.30 at 3LG. (With Ken's new prices, you might be able to squeeze out some extra cards.) At 0.25 or so each, that gives you 15 cards you can add to your deck.

How will we choose a winner? Why, playing the decks, of course. I just happen to have four experienced Redemption players in my house, so we'll have fun seeing which deck comes out on top. There will be at a minimum a double round robin, so flukey luck should even out. How long this will take depends on how many entries there are.

Is there a prize? Why, yes, there is. The winner can have an assortment of 200 non-duplicated common cards! Or, you can choose one of the following cards instead: Water to Wine promo, Chastisement of the Lord promo, Bartimaeus promo, Leviathan, King Saul (Ki), or Samaria site (Priests).

Post your decks here. I'll wait a while before cutting off entries, and then we'll announce a winner as soon as we have one. Have fun!

(All playtesters/relatives of the poster/players from NJ named Braun are prohibited from entering this contest.)

This is a really good idea, that new playgroup leaders need to look at!  I've been doing this with my kids currently.  I have them buy the starter deck then do something like memorize the verses for really cheap cards to build a deck like this.  It is a very cost effective way not only for the new players to get cards cheap or free, but also improve their decks enough that they might not place top 20 at a Nats, but still have a "better" deck and any of them could win at a closed tournament or something.  I've even gone as far to say that the new players can add any cards they want from their collection, but have the more experienced players held to something like this of $15 cards, without a price limit.  It is a great way to "even" the playing field.  Hopefully people we look at this as a way to start playgroups!

Under 30 cents or maximum of 30 cents? I'm not sure if there is anything worth 30 cents but I just want to be sure.

EDIT: and also, just to double-check, we can add starter deck cards from either the I/J decks to the opposite deck free of charge? To clarify, we could add about 15 cards plus any from the opposite starter deck?

1) Under .30 (so max .29). I had to draw my arbitrary line somewhere.  ;D

2) Yes, cards from the other starter are free. I wanted to allow for the switching of offenses and defenses without cost, as well as the ability to use all the dominants and multi cards if you want to.

Cool. Thanks.

Also, can we PM our decks instead of posting them in the interest of not revealing our dastardly secrets? ::)

PMing is fine. I promise to keep your secrets until the contest is finished. :)

DDiceRC,

Sounds like something I'd like to try to enter.  How much time do I have to put my deck together?

1) Under .30 (so max .29). I had to draw my arbitrary line somewhere.  ;D

2) Yes, cards from the other starter are free. I wanted to allow for the switching of offenses and defenses without cost, as well as the ability to use all the dominants and multi cards if you want to.

so an I or J for a base with an addition of any cards I want from the other starter at no charge, and then 3.75 other cards based off of 3LG prices (about 15, possibly more if there are a few 0.17 cards assuming that I don't go over 3.75 in total).

Must be type 1 legal.

Are those my only restrictions?

Steven

Yep. I'm not putting a hard deadline on it yet, since it's going to be a summer project. I'll wait and see how many people want to try it out. At some point, I will close off entries, but I'll give plenty of notice.

I'm definitely interested, but not sure if I can devote any time towards it before end of June.  I don't anticipate needing lots of time due to the restrictions, but I do still need to see what my I/J deck can do so I know which other cards to include.  Thanks

When I first started playing redemption I did the exact same thing with my starter decks-that was until I found TLG...
