Title: Disciples
Post by: jbeers285 on July 23, 2011, 07:55:39 PM
Ok so I'm complete new to the game only played my little brother with his deck against his other deck.

I bought a starter pack and I get killed every time . . . I have now purchased like 12 packs of disciples booster packs and want to build a themed offense with them

What cards do I need and what cards should I be looking for???

Thanks everyone

How you build your deck depends on what kind of deck you want to play. I personally prefer type 1, and it is easier for someone who is new and doesn't have as many cards to build a t1 deck.

If you are getting Disciples packs and want a themed deck... well, obviously, you'll want to start collecting the disciples themselves. I don't use disciples, so I'm not sure exactly which ones to use. I personally prefer Priests, but hey - each man to his own.

Thanks for the input are priests stronger then disciples?

I just figured I would go with the newest expansion.

I for sure am only trying to play type 1 right now I don't have a good enough grip on the game yet to try anything advanced

Each theme has it's strengths and weaknesses. If you want to play something, then just try and see if it works. :) Don't forget that you need a defense, too, though.

As for disciples, cards that seem to get a lot of use are, obviously, all 11 of the heroes (though you probably won't use all 11 in a t1 deck). Some disciples decks play Red along with the purple, because Peter and Andrew are both red. If they do this they usually use the Centurion at Capernaum and the Centurion at Calvary, too, as well as Centurion's Proclamation. A lot of decks will use Fishing Boat, too, in fact it's pretty standard for Disciples decks in general. Enhancements from the Disciples booster pack, such as My Lord and My God, or Faith as a Mustard Seed work really well too.

Thanks for the advice and now I know some important cards to watch for!

As for a defense does any suggest anything in particular my brother uses Babylonians and they are awesome I feel like at times when he gets the draw thy are almost impenetrable but I don't want to be a copy cat any suggests??

I've heard the big thing right is philistines but I wanna avoid them because if that's the big thing the any one who is any good can protect against a philistine based defense right?

Another popular defense you may want to check out is Pharisees.  They're not as powerful as Babs or Phillies, but are speedy, and can ninja block.

What does that mean to be a speedy defense/ ninja block?

They set up very quickly and can stop heroes in ways that can't be undone.

Sadducees are more of a finese defense, so in that sense they are speedy.

I would go with pharisees or babs. I wouldn't over concern yourself with copying his defense. why compromise if it would work best for you..... not to say it's the best, just saying it's not necessarily a good argument to not pick that defense ;)

So pharisees are the ones to go for not sadducees???

I like the sound of a speedy defense but what would some of the draw backs be? How would you defend against those weaknesses?

Drawbacks of speed are that you run out of cards fast. Once you run out of cards in your deck, you better either have a lot of "search discard pile"s or you're done for. Also, most speed decks are extremely unbalanced - there's a lot more of one alignment (good/evil) than the other. Most are mostly good. Mine is trying to be anti-speed, and has a huge focus on evil. The problem on both sides is when your draw pile runs out, and you're stuck with no enhancements. I lost a game the other day like this to my brother's Red Dragon, since all of my heroes were human and I didn't have any enhancements to stop the stupid thing >:(

The advantages of Pharisees is that they have excellent initiative, character abilities, speed, and unconventional blocking ability.

The drawbacks are that they have no good battle-winners that kill a Hero, are very susceptible to FbtN, and have little ability to stop Thad.

FBTN stands for Fight By the Numbers. That's all the people who have abilities that say "Negate all special abilities on Characters and Enhancements. Battle is determined by the numbers". Thad is short for Thaddeus, who is probably the most annoying character in the game.

Type: Hero Char. • Brigade: Purple • Ability: 8 / 8 • Class: None • Special Ability: Protect all cards in play, set-aside area, Artifact piles, hands, and decks from Evil Characters with toughness X or less. Cannot be interrupted. • Identifiers: NT Male Human, Disciple • Verse: Matthew 10:2-3 • Availability: Disciples booster packs ()    (Note: X=#of disciples in play. Don't know why that isn't in the REG.)

Red Dragon also comes in the G/H starter set, without the Blood of the Lamb clause (BotL still can get rid of it).

Thanks again to everyone

Actually, there were only 7 of the 11 Disciple Heroes printed in the Disciples set, Thomas, Philip, Thaddeus, Matthew, Bartholomew, James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot. If you got five of them in 12 packs, that's doing pretty well. Peter, Andrew, James and John will probably be reprinted in a future set (or maybe not James and John, as they're already pretty useful in a Disciples deck).
