Clay/Red - Armor of God - Roman capture

So ever since the cards were previewed on Land of Redemption I've known I wanted to build a clay/red deck once TPC officially released. The question I have is whether the deck would be better as a T1 deck or a T2 deck.

Given that none of the AoG cards are actual battle winners, my concern for having a T1 deck is that a large portion (over 10% in a 50-card deck) will be enhancements that just get placed and sit. The problem with T2 is that you can still only have 1 of each armor in the deck and while one of the heroes can search them out from deck it's still a small percentage of the deck. So, really, these cards are kind of caught in the middle of the types.

For the defense I wanted to try a capture Roman deck what given the capture synergy of the TPC Romans.

Cards I'm already thinking to include:
-The 6 AoG enhancements
-All the AoG-related heroes from TPC
-The red Centurions from various sets
-Roman Jailer
-Alexandrian Ship and various support cards from TPC

Thoughts/suggestions/ideas/Browa-this-is-a-terrible-idea-and-you-should-just-give-up?

All I can say is that I played against a type one deck with AoG, can not remember the defense though, and it was just frustrating!
I think the sooner you can get the enhancements out the better, and you do not need a lot of other battle winners (but definitely some would help). So my advice is to go with type one, but that would just be my opinion :)

I built just such a deck recently, I will try to post a deck list later. It is definitely not an optimal build, because one of the fun things I wanted to try was to only use cards in the new format (that is, only cards printed in 2013 or later...so no NJ, Grapes, Mayhem, etc.). It's still surprisingly effective, and it's really fun to play.

The way my deck is built, Sword of the Spirit isn't really necessary. I currently don't have any battle winners, and while I will likely add 1 or 2 at some point, they will probably be interrupts anyway, since ideally you are attacking with a band in most cases and won't get initiative otherwise. I use Faithfulness so that Scattered isn't an automatic battle winner. The rest of the Armor is usually pretty quick to get set up, and once it is all going, there are relatively few defenses of balanced decks that can penetrate the band with all of the protection the various armor provides.

Gamaliel's Speech is a must have, as is Fortress of Antonia. I don't use any of the older Centurions (due to the deck building restriction I put on myself) but Cornelius and Peter seem to be sufficient for early or late attacks, if the spiritual warriors band is defeated. Peter, Love, and Miraculous Handkerchiefs all help to keep the band alive.

Like I said, mine is by no means an optimal build, but it has seen some success, and is mostly just fun to play.

Also, keep in mind that you can use the promo Soldier of God (different art, different card) in addition to the new one. He can band to one of the other warriors, so while certainly not as good as the new one, he'd still be worthwhile.

I'd love to see your build! I definitely plan to include Speech and Fortress, I forgot to put those in the first post. I was also thinking Paul's Belt as well since I can at least play it on my defensive characters.

I hadn't thought about Miraculous Handkerchiefs, that's an interesting idea.

All I can say is that I played against a type one deck with AoG, can not remember the defense though, and it was just frustrating!

It's likely to be a T1 deck unless there's overwhelming opinion that it should be T2. Though I might make versions for both formats, too! haha

I also have a T2 deck in the works, which might prove to be very interesting. I won't provide too many details on that yet, however, as it has not yet been tested.

A Soldier's Prayer is really good for this offense. The Roman Spear is decent too. Because of the built in synergy with cards like Roman Spear, Roman Jailer, Fortress, etc I found that a gray defense works really well with the clay/red offense.

I use Faithfulness so that Scattered isn't an automatic battle winner.

As long as you have one of the AoG that protects from brown, crimson, gray or pale green, any Hero wearing said armor won't be underdecked by Scattered. If you put your AoG on the right character(s) you won't need Faithfulness. But if you're looking for an easy, all inclusive way to stop Scattered it's probably the best card.

Jordan wasn't sure, but I absolutely think Walking on Water (the National promo) could make a comeback with this new set.  8)

Have you checked the REG?
Have you looked it up in ORCID?

I feel like the theme needs a dominant like The Holy Spirit to be really useful. Otherwise people are just going to target your heroes and enhancements.

It's true, they will. That's why the AoG protects the Hero from the things that target Heroes. You have to deal with them in layers. First remove, negate or interrupt the AoG, then take down the Hero.

A Soldier's Prayer is really good for this offense.

Agreed. I didn't include it in the T1 deck, because of my self imposed restrictions, but there will definitely be 4 copies in the T2 deck.

I actually wasn't sure about that. I know way back in the day, immune abilities only worked against multi cards if they were immune to all of the brigades (I.e. Frog Demons from Warriors is not immune to Paul, because of his other brigades). Since protection and immunity are essentially the same thing, I assumed I would have to be protected from all 4 of Scattered brigades, or the brigade of the character that played it, in order to dodge it. I'd have to check the new REG (or wait for Dayne to do it for me... ;)) to be sure though.

In any case, Faithfulness also protects from a bunch of other nasty stuff and is easily recurrable, so I think it probably has a place regardless.

The reason I'm not convinced is that there will almost always be better options (Bravery of Priscilla for one). It would be neat to see for sure, but I'm not optimistic.

The new REG section on immune/protect doesn't mention anything about multicolor cards.  I haven't seen anything about it in the glossary, but could have missed something.

Because of how the brigades are spread - Belt protects from Crimson and Pale Green, Breastplate protects from Brown and Gray - Faithfulness is definitely useful to protect a 2nd or 3rd (depending on how it works) hero.

Lots of great suggestions so far, thanks everyone! When starting a deck from scratch I usually feel supremely overwhelmed so these ideas are really helpful.

I'll try and get at least a preliminary (T1) decklist put together and posted in the correct section. Feel free to post any other suggestions in the meantime. :D

Don't take my comments above as the actual ruling on this. It appears we'll need to remind ourselves how this is supposed to be played. Initially I thought Scattered still worked if the EC using it wasn't of a protected brigade. Another elder corrected my understanding, but it appears Jordan also might view it differently. This is definitely something we will discuss and come to a (hopefully) quick resolution. :)
